AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

Who is right?

Some flasks now do 24 hours hot. We take a full one in the campervan. Following along as also on a second floor bedroom. Currently we take turns!

LuckyCharmz · Today 20:13

I’d go for kettle and a thermos.

Eenameenadeeka · Today 20:18

I've never had tea in bed so I'd think it very unnecessary, but if you both always have tea in bed, and he wants tea in bed and wants you to continue to make it, then he's being unreasonable.

There's a humming sound off a fridge which is very noticeable in the dead of night. Mil has one in her guest room. I can't sleep in there.

This is amazing but what do you do on day two when yo've eaten all the biscuits on day 1?! 😆

Luckily for me…. I keep a jumbo box of them in the wardrobe.
a blessing and a curse.

Over It Whatever GIF

Definitely do it

Fwiw, I moved from a house to a flat for this reason (although I did grow up in a flat)

Why should I have to exercise, going up and down stairs, in my own home? Thats what the stair master at the gym is for

I have my bedroom downstairs where my living room, wet room and kitchen is instead of having a bedroom on another level. I just have a tiny walk to carry my cup to the kitchen. It's bliss. Surely you still need to carry dirty cups to the kitchen anyway?

Stop making him tea and let him learn natural consequences? If he’s happy to traipse up and down the stairs every day, let him do it.

I can't believe what I'm reading here! I assumed that everyone would be as horrified as I am at the thought of this set-up in the bedroom, but it turns out I am in the minority. Having a long hard think about my preconceptions.

Our second floor loft extension should be done within 6 weeks, so I guess the real test will come then...

I don't like drinking my morning coffee in bed, but I'm not in the least bit surprised that other people do (I just don't know why I'm horribly uncomfortable sitting up in bed, but others aren't?).

im not in the slightest bit horrified that people have these 'set ups' in their bedrooms. Which part of it horrifies you?

Do it. Get a toaster too. I do ..I cant i can't be doing all the stairs pre coffee
They may as well stick a microwave in while they are st it!

Don't forget the air fryer!! Popcorn maker...

There was an element of light-hearted hyperbole, it of course doesn't actually horrify me. I am genuinely surprised, however, at the number of enthusiastic adopters of a hot drink "set-up" ("rig"? "equipment"?) in their bedrooms. Bedrooms are for bed activities and reading, kitchens are for making tea....

I was a bit horrified at the en-suite suggestion.

I wouldn’t want the quiet buzz of the fridge. We were in the loft bedroom for a while and I hated how far away it was to pop and get something. That bedroom
is bigger than ours and dh would swap, but I really don’t want to.

nutsfornuts · Today 22:48

Nah, the exercise is good for you.

Can't be sure what's hyperbole & what's genuine on here anymore 🤣

I think a lot more people would like a cup of tea in bed in the morning over 'bed activities' ! I don't like tea in bed (read into that what you will 🤣)

Like the en suite, for example?

I don’t think you can plug things in in bathrooms… can you? 🤔

Wallasey123 · Today 22:52

This is the stuff I dreamt of when I was a kid thinking “when I’m older I can do what I like…”
I say TREAT YOURSELF, personal fridge sounds excellent

Thechaseison71 · Today 22:52

Put the mini fridge in a wardrobe. I remember some hotel I stayed it had a pullout tea making kit in a wardrobe and mi I fridge was underneath it

I'll be honest, bed activities virtually always means sleeping, I just didn't want to sound too staid 😂

Something like this ( designed for my pax wardrobe lol)

AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?
Niftywigglesheep · Today 23:09

OP this is actually my dream 😂 we’re having an extension done on our home and the master suite is having this fitted on like a hotel for the exact same reason! Wake up and tea in bed 🙌

Snugglemonkey · Today 23:10

I hate a fridge in the bedroom. I can feel vibration from them and it disturbs my sleep. Does that happen to your dh?

Ohnoyoudont2 · Today 23:10

Put a kettle and fridge in the room. Done.

Would you hear it after a while though? A friend of mine lives backing onto the railway line. Often his guests are disturbed by trains. He however doesn't even notice them

Eh? My bathroom has my hairdryer, electric toothbrush etc plugged in.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · Today 23:12

I can’t think of anything worse than drinking tea or coffee in bed, but if it’s something you’re not prepared to give up just go for it.
