AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

Who is right?

Milk will go off quickly as they are more chillers than fridges.

IndigoBluey · Today 16:13

Could you set it up like hotel rooms have where the small kettle and teabags and milk are organised in one of those slide out drawers then you would only see it when you are making the cuppa

Fridges make noises. I had to sleep in the in laws kitchen once which is was not fun. I’d get a small insulated bag and keep a freezer pack in it, will keep it cold enough. Just swop the freezer pack over every day.

We use our attic bedroom as our guest room, and my DM always likes a cup of tea first thing, so I've set up a little hot drinks station. She is very happy with it. Ensuite for filling the kettle. They just take a little jug of milk with them at bed time, she insists it doesn't go off. Sadly MIL hasn't got the hint she can have a hot drink up there and not appear in the kitchen at 7.15am while I'm trying to get ready for work!

I just got a standard sized but cheap kettle as its not used very often. There is plenty of space up there for a little IKEA coffee table.

I would not keep a fridge in the bedroom as it makes a faint noise, which would irritate me.
I would have a tray with Kettle (and have a flask for milk).
Many 'water bottles' are insualted, etc.
I admit this makes for a daily effort, but presumably you would take the dirty cups down in the morining, so I would have a routine of taking the flask and cups upstairs each day.

My parents have a coffee machine in their bedroom and after uni my Mum commandeered my pink mini fridge. I don't think they have a fridge now as Mum drinks her coffee black.

Hi Toomuchpressure
Well, I’m so pleased to have read your post. I thought it was only “mad” me that had a kettle in the Loft bedroom. I also have tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits in a tin. In addition I have a tea towel so that I can wash my cup up in the en-suite and dry it.
Does your husband never stay in a hotel or B @ B. They have tea making facilities in the room! God forbid if they didn’t!
So I say go for it.
PS I don’t have a fridge because I take tea and coffee black. I’d have a fridge if I took milk. AND I may even have a bottle of wine in it. You can make the Loft Bedroom into your own sanctuary.
Enjoy

Another reason why I would hate it. The feeing my bedroom now felt and looked like a generic b&b experience would be awful.

A little tea station on a tray with a travel kettle, a couple of mugs etc sounds fine, but I'd draw a line at the fridge because of the noise, even if it wasn't a space issue. My sister does this, and uses a small thermos for milk which works fine.

I’m sorry but thermos flask tea is rank !

It isn't if the flask is washed properly. I have a good one that stays hot for up to 18/24hrs. I make black tea in it though and add thd milk separately, as I don't want to taint it and risk "rank" tea.

My ex used to think tea from a flask, that I concur was rank (and tasted like vomit to me,) was normal and nostalgic of his family trips 🤮. I bought a new flask and washed it promptly after every use, but there was no more nostalgia for him 🙃.

I got a teasmade and going to get some creamer pots for our loft conversion……. Damn lidls middle aisle 🤣

SmellycatSmelllycat · Today 16:26

What would we do in this country if tea and coffee were suddenly unavailable?! I wonder how you would all cope? 😆.

I don’t drink hot drinks and I feel quite lucky my DP and most of my friends don’t drink them either so I’m not expected to provide constant teas and coffees.

I was watching classic coronation street the other day and noticed that in every scene no matter what happens there is always one character saying “should I put the kettle on?” “Do you want a nice cup of tea?” “The kettle’s just boiled” etc.
It’s always a “nice” or “lovely” cup of tea but coffee doesn’t deserve its own adjective.
It’s not just in soaps, it doesn’t matter how traumatic the situation, someone will always offer you a cup of tea.

Obviously as not being part of the hot drink cult I don’t understand the urgency of not being able to wait until you get up to have a drink and I wouldn’t want the clutter in my bedroom of a kettle, fridge, mugs etc. when you can just as easily got down some stairs to the kitchen.
That’s just my opinion though and I don’t expect everyone to think like me, if it makes you happy then go for it!
I occasionally drink alcohol and my friend thinks because she doesn’t that it must be wrong.

I would be interested if someone can explain to me why lots of people rely on a steady stream of hot drinks from the moment they wake up no matter what the weather?
Is it thirst? The taste? My friend’s mum was drinking cups of tea in this recent hot weather the other day whilst we had cold drinks with ice, we were completely baffled.
Everywhere I go that offers free refreshments it’s always tea and coffee and unless they have squash for children the rest of us are just outsiders never catered for!

The fridge might sound quite loud in the quiet of the night, they do hum and turn on and off.

Buy a teasmaid! It has a little clock and everything you can feel like you’re back in the 70s 😂

Aliceinmunsnetland · Today 16:33

Oops wrong thread... As you were everyone.😚

WoundedWidower · Today 16:38

I remember my parents had a Teasmade. Fresh milk taken up at night, and woken up to tea in the morning! Why not go retro!

PlateauDeChamp · Today 16:42

Definitely do it although not a mini fridge as they do make noise but just bring a flask up with the milk in. You could have a couple on rotation so one is in the dishwasher getting a good clean. My Mum had a teasmade in the 80s!

My friend had a whole coffee bar in her bedroom but it was more like a master suite than just a bedroom. It had a massive walk in wardrobe through some doors and it was part of that complete with built in fridge but you couldn't hear that from the bedroom just due to size and layout.

underthehawthorntree · Today 16:46

I think it sounds very civilised to have a kettle and fridge in your room. Get a nice comfy chair and some biscuits too. Bliss.

MyDeftDuck · Today 16:48

Can’t remember when I last had a cup of tea in bed tbh! When we had family to stay recently we did put a kettle, mugs, tea bags, and a thermos of cold milk in their room, which also had an en suite. That way, they could get ready without having to come down for a cup of tea.

Jshkag · Today 16:52

I have a travel kettle in my bedroom along with a couple of mugs and a caddy of teabags. I just bring a little cold milk in an insulated flask at night, and then enjoy my tea in bed in the morning.

crazeekat · Today 16:56

do it if u have space. I did it in my old house I was up really early and pottering about woke up kids and all the cats. Had it all on a little tray with little mini jars all looking very hotel-esk lol

likelysuspect · Today 17:01

The milk wont go off overnight anyway. I frequently leave my milk out on theworktop all day because I cant be bothered to keep getting it in and out of the fridge and apart from in really really hot weather, it doesnt go off

BuildbyNumbere · Today 17:09

What about a teasmaid?

hypnovic · Today 17:24
