AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

toomuchpressure78 · Today 14:08

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

It's not a big thing to have a kettle and mini fridge in the bedroom, surely. You just have to remember to fill the kettle every night before you go up. Can't see the problem.

Joliefolie · Today 15:50

Get good thermos flasks not just to keep milk cold but also to make the tea the night before. It tastes fresh and hot in the morning and no need to boil water in your bedroom

I would only do this if I was elderly and/or infirm. Two flights of stairs isn't a lot if you're otherwise ok! It's good for you!

Unless you are my husband who can easily spill tea on the way up, on the carpet, the walls .. honestly it’s not worth the effort!

I’m sorry but thermos flask tea is rank !

We have a fridge inside our wardrobe for cold drinks etc- wanted to be bougie when we did our master bedroom 😆When we were having renovations and without a proper kitchen, I bought a teasmade so that I could have a brew in the morning in my bedroom Love it!! Got it brand new off vinted for £20

Swan teasmade. They are so brilliant in every way. Your wake up alarm is an actual cup of tea! We also sleep in loft conversion so it is a must. Milk in a small thermos in the summer so no need for a fridge.

The person not making it doesn't get the veto.

This

Get a nice chair in the kitchen / dining room. Make drink and sit there.... enjoy the peace before everyone gets up and comes down. Maybe a coffee in bed on a sunday but im not making a brew in my bedroom.
although teas-maid. Is that a thing still?

hollygoolightly · Today 15:58

I wouldn't want a kettle and mini fridge in my bedroom personally. 2 flights of stairs at home is not that much different from one flight really, unless your disabled or elderly and can't manage them.

RomeWasVisitedInADay · Today 16:00

I voted you are being unreasonable as I've never understood going back to bed with a cup of tea thing, once I'm up I'm up, and the risk of spilling tea in bed and the massive operation cleaning up, just seems more hassle than it's worth. I also don't really understand the first thing on someone's mind when they wake up is tea/coffee. But that's me not you.

Also I wouldn't want the whirr of a fridge all night or white noise of the kettle boiling on the 1 or 2 lie ins I get in a year! And smelly tea bags in a bin, having to clear the bin more regularly because of this, spillages, dishcloths, remembering milk for the bedroom fridge etc etc...

I am also on a top floor attic room, 3 flights of stairs from the kitchen and would however looooooove an ensuite (bathroom is 2 flights of stairs away), but husband hates them!

KeyOfTheDoor · Today 16:00

I can't believe what I'm reading here! I assumed that everyone would be as horrified as I am at the thought of this set-up in the bedroom, but it turns out I am in the minority. Having a long hard think about my preconceptions.

Our second floor loft extension should be done within 6 weeks, so I guess the real test will come then...

Teasmade and take small tray with mugs and small flask with milk up with you when you go to bed.

My parents had one those about 40 years ago😀Do they still make them?

Mayflower282 · Today 16:02

Think of the exercise you are getting 👌

LER83 · Today 16:03

I'm about to move into a 3 storey house with our bedroom on the top floor. I already have a teasmaid and currently take a flask of milk up. When we move i'm getting a mini fridge to keep milk and bits of make up in. My ds has a mini fridge in his room for drinks and they aren't that noisy. Think the one I'm getting is 5 liters so very small!

TeaPot496 · Today 16:04

I'm not sure why people are so horrified. Never stayed in a hotel room?

notmypeasnotmyallotment · Today 16:04

I got a loft conversion and did this in the end of a sliding wardrobe, go for it

Make-up in the fridge? That's a new one on me. What makeup requires refrigerating?

Well yeah, but there's no easily accessible kitchen in a hotel and it's not like it looks particularly nice. It's a needs must situation.

Not a chance, I would hate that, so much noise and mess......

How much noise and mess could making a cup of tea involve?!

Clefable · Today 16:08

Fridges can be annoying as they power cycle on and off to keep the temperature, so it will be humming on and off throughout the night. Just something to bear in mind if either of you are likely to be woken by it.

nevernotmaybe · Today 16:08

I would never personally, unless there were health issues then only permanently of those issues were permanent.

Going down is more of what I want getting up to include, even on days where I am not going anywhere. One extra set wouldnt register even remotely.

FlowerUser · Today 16:09

I don't have tea in bed but my study is on the first floor next to our bedroom and en-suite. I have a kettle in the study with tea bags and sugar and make many cups of tea a day. I don't want to have to traipse up and down several times a day. It's bad enough having to go down three times for meals - we are very strict about only eating in the dining room.

I don't drink milk so no need for a fridge. However it's also our living room so.we regularly consider getting a wine fridge for the room.

If you make the tea then it's your call. That said I'd be a bit worried about spillages and such - the area that the tea making happens in would need to be pretty waterproof and easy to clean.

I think there’s more chance of spillage carrying the tea up two flights of stairs than from making it in the bedroom.

Hi Toomuchpressure
Well, I’m so pleased to have read your post. I thought it was only “mad” me that had a kettle in the Loft bedroom. I also have tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits in a tin. In addition I have a tea towel so that I can wash my cup up in the en-suite and dry it.
Does your husband never stay in a hotel or B @ B. They have tea making facilities in the room! God forbid if they didn’t!
So I say go for it.
PS I don’t have a fridge because I take tea and coffee black. I’d have a fridge if I took milk. AND I may even have a bottle of wine in it. You can make the Loft Bedroom into your own sanctuary.
Enjoy
