AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

toomuchpressure78 · Today 14:08

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

Who is right?

sounds nice. you could get a kettle or a teasmaid with a mini fridge for milk. BTW a mini fridge is good for other things like cosmetic creams in the summer when they can melt, cold drinks etc.
or one of those instant water things for drinks

Unless you have mobility or medical problems I can't think why anyone would need to do this.
It's 2 floors not 20.

It’s not a need, it’s something OP wants and would like. Not everything has to be a need.

Not a chance, I would hate that, so much noise and mess......

mess????

Iamthemoom · Today 15:27

Something like this (though maybe smaller and simpler as no need for this many cups I imagine) would keep it all clutter free. (Photo incoming!) fridge underneath in a cupboard too.

You nominate him official tea maker, of course. Problem solved (sarcasm)

Howinthehelldidthishappen · Today 15:27

Neither of you are right, neither is wrong.
Personally, I would hate to have a coffee in bed, but that's me.
You also need to remember that your bedroom is a shared space, and there may be a valid reason your husband doesn't want a fridge in there, noise etc.
So maybe a small kettle that is put away after use, and a flask for your milk.

vandertable · Today 15:29

YANBU. We had a Swan teasmade for years, and I used to buy the little sachets of milk that you get on trains/planes (lakeland?). Prefer a coffee these days so we've got a tassimo and use the cafe au lait pods and don't need milk. Definitely worth doing though, it's so nice to have a tea or coffee in the morning without leaving the bedroom.

gamerchick · Today 15:29

Maybe drink downstairs?

I wouldn't have a kettle boiling in a bedroom. Too much moisture in a bedroom as it is without adding to it.

RawBloomers · Today 15:31

You are definitely in the right here! Tell DH he can only veto the idea if he goes down to make the tea every morning.

Having said that, I agree with others that a minifridge may not be ideal due to noise. There are plenty of ways around that, though.

Ohpleeeease · Today 15:33

Have you got the space for a mini fridge? If so I would have one. We had a teasmade for years, the only hassle being keeping the milk fresh. You could probably fit one in a small cupboard.

Our kitchen was both miles away and Baltic. We needed a hot cuppa to brace ourselves for breakfast.

ginasevern · Today 15:35

Why would anyone get out of bed, go downstairs, make tea and then take it back up to bed. What a faff. I'd be wide awake by then.

catipuss · Today 15:36

You just need a tray on a chest of drawers for the kettle and tea things so there will be no mess, any more than carrying cups filled with tea to the bedroom. Just like a nice hotel room. If the room is a decent size go for it, if DH doesn't want to use it he can go downstairs for his. You can't (legally) run high powered electrical things in a bathroom too much risk of wet people and electricity coming together badly!

Timespentwithcatsisneverwasted · Today 15:37

Get a teasmade!

FrenchandSaunders · Today 15:37

I would only do this if I was elderly and/or infirm. Two flights of stairs isn't a lot if you're otherwise ok! It's good for you!

Foundress · Today 15:37

To me it would all depend on whether your bedroom is carpeted or not. If carpeted then the possibility of spillages would put me off. I had a kettle, teabags, milk and mug in the bedroom while I was getting a new kitchen fitted. It was only for two weeks and that was enough! I don’t see the attraction of having a drink in bed but we are all different 😀.

VividDeer · Today 15:38

Fridges are noisy things.

FormerCautiousLurker · Today 15:38

Can’t you just get a nescafe gusto machine that heats the water through the pod and use the milk and tea pods? Or bring a flask of cold milk up at bedtime and have a teasmaid type machine?

Jopo12 · Today 15:40

Absolutely do it. There are 35 stairs between our bedroom and the kitchen plus 2 half landings on the way down. We have a nice table with kettle, mugs, tea and coffee on a nice tray.

Milk we take up as needed. It lasts a day or 2 as it's cool up there when not summer. Or you can buy uht milk sachets online to keep up there.

Mini fridges cost quite a lot of money to run, so compare the cost with milk sachets.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · Today 15:43

The person not making it doesn't get the veto.

Hi, OP -

As @LostFuse says, a thermoelectric mini fridge is essentially silent. It is best for things like pre-cooled drinks; for your needs it would be fine.

If DH has genuine concerns about damp etc why not set up a tea station on the landing outside your bedroom door?

VictoriousPunge · Today 15:44

OP, we did this in a previous house for exactly the same reason. It was lovely to be able to make tea without going down two flights of stairs, and we always open the windows and close the bedroom door for a bit after getting up anyway, so we didn't have a problem with damp from the steam.

We regretted the mini fridge, however. The one we bought claimed to be 'silent' but definitely wasn't. I second pps' suggestion to use an insulated flask instead, just one of those double-walled metal water bottles would be perfect.

If someone created a stylish, modern version of the teasmade I'd be there like a shot.

menopause59 · Today 15:45

Get a teasmade you wont look back so 80's but the best invention ever 😆

Sahara123 · Today 15:48

We do this !! Treated us to a fancy Smeg mini kettle so it looks cool. And ours is actually on the landing , could you do that ? All on a tray to limit spillage. Milk in a flask, we wash the mugs in the en suite sink which will probably horrify some. Every so often we take the dirty ones down in the morning and bring clean ones up at night.
I love my cup of tea in bed before I have to get up and begin the day .
My parents had a kettle right by their bed, and everything else on a tray under the bed which my dad could pull out without even getting up 🤣
