AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

Who is right?

Does he expect tea daily or he is not fussed one way or the other?

Given OP says he ‘would basically cease to function’ if she didn’t make him tea every day, I think we can safely say he is fussed.

I still don't think that proves it but regardless he is a grown adult the OP can tell him to make it himself

Tell the twat that no fridge and kettle in bedroom means no more tea for him.

It's OP who wants to drink tea in bed. Her husband obviously doesn't, so why is he a twat?

She's obviously not being serious. Literally no one would cease to function for want of a cup of tea. OP made that up because she wants to drink tea in bed.

I sure her husband is capable of getting himself a drink and drinking it downstairs (like most normal people) if that's what he wants.

Travel kettle and small flask and you are sorted. Hotels do it all the time. Your DH is an idiot and can go and make his own tea!

Travel kettles take ages to boil though!

Really? I'd never noticed. But if you have time for tea in bed you can wait for a slightly slow kettle! I think it might go down better with the DH (difficult husband😝) as it will take up less room and create less steam.

Ilovemyshed · 01/05/2026 20:32

We have a tassimo machine and a Barcool 25 litre fridge hidden in a vented cupboard. Its a joy (and the fridge is quiet).

Sueandthegoldfish · 01/05/2026 20:40

What you actually need, OP, is a Teasmade 😁

Sadworld23 · 01/05/2026 21:47

Hrft but hotel rooms with a kettle are common

Rosesarere · 01/05/2026 21:55

I have a coffee machine on my bedside table. Only a pod one but I love having a coffee in bed without having to wake DH up to get me one 🤣

wheresthesnowgone · 01/05/2026 21:55

Make tea in the kitchen the night before and take a thermos up with you.

I'm not sure why people are so horrified. Never stayed in a hotel room?

Clearly yes, but I have a coffee in bed as I’ve no where else to have it. Or thr balcony/terrace. Given a choice I don’t want a cup of coffee in bed, I like to go and sit on the sofa.and drink it in the quiet of the morning.

ArtesianWater · 01/05/2026 22:03

Definitely do it. I'd do it 'properly' and create a nice tea/coffee station like in a hotel. In for a penny...

ArtesianWater · 01/05/2026 22:04

In fact, why not add biscuits?

Bungle1985 · 01/05/2026 22:08

First thing we did when we got a loft conversion done was get a coffee machine.
Go for it!

CareBearClaire · 01/05/2026 22:10

During the pandemic when we were all working in different rooms in the house, I set up a small coffee station in my bedroom. It was fab at the time. I kind of missed the kitchen experience of making it eventually but it worked at the time. Give it a go and if you don’t like it then you can always go back to the kitchen - it’s cheap for a basic kettle and you can also get small coffee machines too for not that much if you fancy that too!

Usernamenotav · 02/05/2026 13:05

I can't get behind the tea in bed thing. But if that's a must then yes you need a kettle.

I'd absolutely never have a kettle in my bedroom though.

Does he sleep through the noise it makes?

CatA27 · 02/05/2026 17:32

You dont need a fridge,my mum has taken a little milk jug with skimmed milk (takes longer to go off) in up to bed every night since forever and she has a little travel kettle by her bed and a little pot of teabags. If you live in a particularly hot house then take milk in a flask or insulated container, it will be fine. I definitely wouldnt want a fridge in the bedroom as the noise of it intermittently starting up would wake me up.

Wonderkitty · 02/05/2026 18:22

Either stop giving DH morning cuppa or have a compromise solution of kettle & thermos of milk which others have posted for two reasons:

  1. Steam and spills are messy but manageable if near a window and wipe clean surface or v. Large tray
  2. A small fridge still takes up room, looks out of context in domestic bedroom and the motor running can be noisy. 😉
LurkerEvany · 02/05/2026 18:29

We have. I live in a bunglow and the kitchen is the other end to our bedroom. Practically live in the bedroom as we can then have tv etc as loud as we want.

We drink a lot and so decided to have a half fridge in here. Got a coffee machine rather than kettle but same idea. Partners disabled and I'm not far behind so just made sense.

400rider · 02/05/2026 18:41

Teasmade. Had one second hand the minute we got married otherwise I couldn’t get out of bed!
Still have one 46 years on, just invested in a brand new one from Amazon

Hidihisew · 02/05/2026 18:57

I have a mini kettle and a whole host of teas, coffees and chocolates, absolutely love it

I'd feel more on your partner's side but YANBU. If a fridge and a kettle in the bedroom is going to make you happy, go for it.
