AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

Who is right?

Ooh following along because our loft conversion is a spare room mostly used by my DPs when they come to stay for long weekends and visit my DC. I've been thinking about doing the same for them, so they can enjoy a cuppa in peace in bed if they are awake before everyone is getting up.

As a guest staying with family members, I would absolutely LOVE and appreciate something like this in a loft conversion. I am always mindful of moving around quietly when I stay with other people. I love a tea as soon as my eyes open so that would be heaven. Do it!

OP, go for it too. Can you put it somewhere it is less visible in the bedroom?

@ScottBakula Thank you, that’s a neat little gadget for my Christmas list.

I voted that YANBU although I probably would just use a Thermos for the milk. But I wouldn't impose a kettle on him, oh no no no - if DH wouldn't let me have a kettle in the room I would very generously point out that the only compromise solution is to swap roles and for him to make the tea 9 times out of 10! And that the first day he refused to bring me a cuppa would be the day a new kettle appeared!

He certainlty does not get to force his wife to be his upstairs downstairs servant. Nope. Tea in bed ends today, she can go downstairs and make her own and enjoy it in peace.

If he wants the tea she can have whatever she wants, however she wants, to make it.

And how do the electrics work for the kettle

Im thinking I coujld have this for a tea station or I could have a roll out make up/hair dryer shelf

Well you would have a hole in the back of the wardrobe and a lead plugged into a socket behind there of course. don't you do any diy?

I agree with your husband. How keen is he on drinking tea in bed? Maybe the reason he only makes it once a month is because it's not really something he wants to do.

I'd feel like I was living in a bedsit or B&B with that kind of shit in my bedroom. It seems a bit squalid.

I never eat or drink in bed and never would, so that probably affects my opinion in it.

Whatifitallgoesright · 30/04/2026 11:11

Really? Why are you even here? Your cat could have given you the correct answer by putting it's bum in your face. See also: minibar

What is unreasonable is him expecting her to be his servant up and downstairs.

OP must say "Right then, no more tea in bed or we can have this very reasonable thing I have asked for".

No where has OP suggested her husband expects her to be his "servant up and downstairs". Everything she said suggests he is not bothered about drinking tea in bed, which is a perfectly understandable position.

Alouest · 30/04/2026 11:36

@ScottBakula That's the one I have! It makes a lovely cup of coffee.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 30/04/2026 11:43

Id get a kettle and a small lunch bag/ice pack for milk (or a flask).

Bobloblawww · 30/04/2026 12:27

I think this trend is so grim. It reminds me of Charlie’s family in Charlie and the chocolate factory, permanently lumped together in bed. Or the people in Wall-E who can’t walk anymore. Just walk down the stairs and make a cup of tea.

What trend? People enjoying a cup of tea in bed? What an odd response.

Stop making him tea and let him learn natural consequences? If he’s happy to traipse up and down the stairs every day, let him do it.

What natural consequences? did he say he was bothered or that the op had to make it or downstairs

Does he care for the tea?

ALittleBitofWensleydale · 30/04/2026 12:43

Under no circumstances get a teas made. We did and I hated it. The clock face on it was so bright that aeroplanes from the nearby airport diverted towards us thinking it was part of the runway. They are so noisy when they boil the water which takes forever, and, once boiled it gushes into the pot then beeps just in case you missed the whole palaver. Bloody awful things.
I now have a kettle, mug and spoon on a tray. No need for milk as I drink camomile tea first thing. A flask would be utilised if I needed milk, not a fridge.
Kettle is also useful to top up a hot water bottle if it gets chilly.

Burntt · 30/04/2026 12:53

Get a snuggly blanket so you can make your tea and stay downstairs to drink it and wake up. Make his and leave it on the side for him to come and get. If he complains say well you couldn’t face the stairs and have offered a solution that he has turned down so this is the solution you found that met his criteria?

I think whatever makes you happy you can do. But the noise of a fridge would drive me mad and if his complaint is fridge noise I’d say that’s reasonable. so I’d go for the kettle and a flask of milk. Kettle noise should be suffered if you are getting a cuppa out of it too!

Devongirl1983 · 30/04/2026 14:07

Personally not for me but you do what suits you. I go downstairs straight after waking up, kettle goes on straught away, do the dishwasher, washing machine on, have breakfast, open blinds around the house so it would be totally pointless as never stay upstairs. Stairs are brilliant exercise and I must go up and down them 100 times before we’ve all got out the door 😅It would be more of a pain making sure theres milk up in the mini fridge too, just another thing to keep on top of.

Untailored · 30/04/2026 14:12

Why don’t you just have your tea once you’re up? Is it absolutely crucial to be half-lying under a duvet to drink a morning cup of tea?

Id love to be able to. Shame nobody there to make it for me and put pointless as my bedroom is 10 steps from the kitchen

Not for me would feel like student digs

Why odd? I enjoy a coffee in bed myself. I get up like an adult with legs and go downstairs and make it.

Joliefolie · 30/04/2026 23:50

It's an odd response to think this is either a "trend" or "grim". Some poeple are night owls, some are larks. Some start the day by getting up and out of bed, some ease their way out of bed to get the day going. None of it is grim, weird or whatever. The adult thing to do is work out how you feel best about starting the day and do what you need to do to facilitate that. If descending and climbing another flight of stairs is making your morning routine feel harder and there's a simple fix, why would you not go for it?

Not a chance, I would hate that, so much noise and mess......

How much mess do you make when you make a hot drink? I never spill a drop of anything! What do you do?!

PollyBell · 01/05/2026 00:23

So you would have to keep everything stocked and the extra electricity for the fridge i cant see it worth the lack of walking

Tell the twat that no fridge and kettle in bedroom means no more tea for him.
