AIBU for leaving a cafe after my baby was sick?

Angrycafe · Yesterday 19:50

I was out with DD (2m) and DH earlier at a cafe. DH had to leave 5 minutes before I did with DD because he was running late to meet his friend to watch football.

As I was getting my belongings together, DD was sick everywhere, including on the floor. I was really flustered and quickly left, making sure the immediate area (the table) was clear but admittedly didn’t clean the floor.

A woman (staff) hurried out of the cafe after me and started ranting about a lack of respect and that I wouldn’t be welcome back. I just burst out into tears.

I wish in hindsight I had cleaned it, by I was flustered and in a mess. Am I terrible for doing this?

OP, I was with you until you laughed at your DH’s comment.

Anyway, when my twins made a mess in cafes that was beyond a wet-wipe cleanup, I used to go and ask for a dustpan and brush (or in your case, a mop) to clean it up. The staff were always lovely and would say not to worry about it, but I think it means something that you are at least trying.

Oh don't be so pompous, it was a much needed bit of light relief.

@Angrycafe , you shouldn't have just left. Simply tell the staff that your baby has been sick and they will clean it up - you can't do it yourself without a mop. The lady running after you to tell you off was out of line. And unkind.

So someone leaves baby vomit all over the floor and cba to clean it up (or get her DH to do it) then laughs about the staff member.

Doubling down on shitty behaviour isn’t a good look

No, that would be like asking for the dustpan and brush then walking off before they could give it to me 😂

FindmypalNas · Yesterday 22:42

Why are people always flustered on MN as a reason for dick-ish behaviour?

SnappyQuoter · Yesterday 22:44

Angrycafe · Yesterday 20:32

Blimey no one called her fat, she was a slightly ‘rotund’ lady that’s all!

He did call her fat, and you laughed at of. Both of you sound pretty shitty.

You have a 2 month old. They’re basically a sack you cart around with you at that age. What got you so flustered? You check baby, clean them, calm them, pop them in the pram and then clean up the floor and table. Really not a big deal and no reason to start flapping. Good luck in the toddler years. Maybe learn to not be so nasty about other people if you want sympathy.

Ohnobackagain · Yesterday 22:46

@Angrycafe you could always ring and apologise for leaving in a panic? That way you only have to talk to them and not go there. I am sure you’d then feel you’d at least tried.

See her update where they had SUCH a laugh about the worker’s size

Their response was to sit around joking and laughing at the staff member’s weight, rather than reflect on their own behaviour and how OP mishandled the situation. She isn’t going to apologise.

There was no malice in the original action. She just mishandled it, and needs to learn how to cope with a baby. But there was absolutely malice in their behaviour afterwards, behind the back of the staff. Disgusting.

Thank you.

I told DH and said that I don’t think the staff member has been in that position before. He said that judging by the size of her he’s surprised she managed to catch up with me! That gave me some much needed light relief amongst the tears.

Wow.

It sounds like you and your husband are very well suited. Both rude and socially inept.

Leaving your child’s vomit on a floor for someone else to clean is disgusting.

Noshadealltea · Yesterday 22:53

Having worked in hospitality, you have no idea the awful state that quite a few parents leave the space they have been occupying in.

To leave a puddle of milk sick on the floor is gross and a slip hazard.

I had a very sicky baby, and more often than not was on my own out with her. But I always cleaned up whatever mess we made. Regardless of how flustered I was at the time.

Poor form from her for shouting at you, poorer form from you for expecting someone else to clean up your baby’s vomit.

Rank behaviour

ThisIsMy · Yesterday 22:56

And don’t forget, OP, that your body is probably a little different now than it was 11 months ago. Let’s hope your husband isn’t as rude about your behind your back.

It wasn’t kind @LiviaDrusillaAugusta but clearly the husband was just trying to make OP feel better. And regardless, OP still feels bad and wants to make some kind of amends. The subject of the comment isn’t going to know. That doesn’t mean I agree with making that kind of remark.

Why’s everyone laying into a new mum with a 2 month old baby? Yes she should have handled it better, but some new mums are just trying not to be overwhelmed by it all at that stage.

Because she’s rude as fuck.

A baby being sick in a public place isn’t overwhelming. It’s normal.

Oh lord. Any sympathy I had for you has just evaporated with that nasty comment.

you should’ve cleaned up. Or at least offered to. If your baby had been sick at home you’d have managed it. So why think it’s someone else’s job in the cafe.

I’ve had two kids. I have genuinely never left anywhere on a worse condition than when we arrived.

whynotwhatknot · Yesterday 23:00

arent babies sick all the tijme what you going to do when they shit diarrhea verywhere

Lemonbutters · Yesterday 23:04

It’s hard when you first have a little baby! It’s can be overwhelming, you’re tired and you’ve not been in this situation before. You did your best. What did she want? For you to get a mop and bucket?!

She sounds like a right tw@t most people would just say don’t worry love I’ll sort it you go and get your baby settled! I was so lucky with my dc as had nothing but helpful people when I was out and about. I would steer clear of that place from now on! You have nothing to apologise for .

Why shouldn’t OP or her DH have cleaned up her own child’s sick? OP apparently didn’t want to bother her DH as he had an urgent football match to go to so what’s the betting there were no humiliated tears, just an embarrassing sense of entitlement!

If I was the cafe worker I couldn’t have cleaned it up as I would probably vomit myself. I have cleaned up puke, poo and pee (mainly animal) in the past without an issue but baby vomit is one step too far. Expecting someone to go out of their way to deal with that is a pisstake.

And then they had a jolly good laugh taking the piss out of the cafe worker’s size.

I imagine the cafe worker is indeed hoping the OP, her DH and her vomiting baby will avoid the place from now on.

CodeAmber · Yesterday 23:16

Ewock · Yesterday 20:22

Yet you didnt mind the cafe staff cleaning up your baby's vomit, but wouldn't want to bother the actual father. Nice

This! The entitlement!!!

Candy24 · Yesterday 23:18

You and your husband sound awful. So obviously you think it is fine to make a mess and not care

Beaniebobbins · Yesterday 23:18

Angrycafe · Yesterday 20:08

It was a joke.

It was a horrible thing to say. Completely unnecessary. There was no need for you to repeat it on here either. The baby sick seemed like a poor decision made in a flustered moment. The fat shaming, and the defending if the fat shaming, is just nasty.

PurpleFlower1983 · Yesterday 23:19

I call troll. No one would leave their baby‘s sick all over and do a runner, then insult the poor woman who had to clean it up via a joke from the runaway dad. Definitely a wind up!

But she didn’t call her DH back as she didn’t want him to have to give up his drinking time. Presumably it was okay to make the poor cafe worker clean up the contents of her child’s stomach though.

What is wrong with people? You make a mess, you clean it up. It’s really not difficult. Have a two month old baby is not an excuse to behave badly

Laurmolonlabe · Yesterday 23:20

I think the running out without any attempt to deal with it is where you went wrong- people will usually help if you ask -running out as soon as you leave vomit everywhere is not a good look.
It's easy to panic in situations like this, but you have to resist acting without thinking, especially important now you have children- situations which attract panic will be far more common now you are parent.
