It’s me by the way and that’s the case for my clothes

Depends. If you were on a high wage and couldn’t be bothered to spend more, yes. If you couldn’t afford to buy more expensive clothes, no.

Why?
I am high wage (one of those mythical MN women) and I happily wear supermarket and inexpensive high street clothes (H&M, M&S, Zara). I kitted my DC out in mainly supermarket clothes up until they were about 10y.

StepawayfromtheLindors · 26/04/2026 11:03

Not remotely but I’d judge someone who thought less of you because of where you buy your clothes.

Ahsheeit · 26/04/2026 11:04

I wouldn't notice. Most of my clothes come from charity shops.

Id judge you for being a bit stupid frankly. WTF does being bothered to spend more mean?

Shopping7777 · 25/04/2026 19:44

I guess you can tell they are cheap

On the contrary - I wore a dress to a party and someone asked me whether it was Massimo Dutti or Reiss and it was Sainsbury’s. I told them the truth as I don’t care.
Tbh most clothes won’t look cheap if you wear the right size and style them.

CinnamonBuns67 · 26/04/2026 11:16

I couldn't care less where someone got their clothes from. Supermarket, Primark, Charity shop, Second hand who cares?

Pepperedpickles · 26/04/2026 11:17

Everything I wear is from Tesco or Sainsbury’s apart from an odd thing from Seasalt. I am just not that bothered about clothes. I like to look nice but have no desire to spend hours scrolling online looking at different websites or wandering round the shops. Clothes just aren’t really my thing. I would rather spend my money on my garden, decorating, travel. I don’t think you can judge how much money someone has by the clothes they wear if that’s what people are trying to insinuate. The wealthiest people I know all shop at charity shops!

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 26/04/2026 11:23

No. I would judge the person who judged them though.

IHateEmptyPockets · 26/04/2026 11:54

I wouldn’t notice or judge. Mind you, I’m so away with the fairies these days I may not even notice if you weren’t wearing any at all! Grin

MandemChickenShop · 26/04/2026 12:44

No shade on anyone buying clothes from supermarkets or other low cost outlets.

But I am really surprised by the lack of concern here about the ramifications of fast fashion, wastage, sweatshops etc.

Cyclingmummy1 · 26/04/2026 12:48

Do you over spend on cheaper brands, ie do you have too many clothes? If so, yes, it's wasteful. If not, no, not at all. I admired some jeans on a very stylish older friend a couple of weeks ago and she was delighted to tell me they were from a supermarket.

VanessaSanessa · 26/04/2026 12:58

I'm a high earner and my clothes are very much a mix of supermarket, Zara, H&M, Next etc. Never bought designer in my life nor would I, total con.

Some of the supermarket stuff is great. I find Primark jeans excellent, t-shirts, shorts, kids stuff. I tend to mix with pieces from other stores.

I think head to toe Primark can be obvious but no, I wouldn't judge you, who cares.

I used to stay clear of Primark before but to be honest, I find the mid tier stores, they quality is gone poor but the prices haven't!!

Howmanycatsistoomany · 26/04/2026 13:00

Of course not OP.

A lot of my clothes these days are preloved, because I enjoy picking up a cashmere cardi for a couple of euros or a brand new with tags (£168) All Saints dress for €4.50 (sorry but had to tell someone, DH just 🙄)

No, not at all, but I might judge someone who doesn’t know the difference between who’s and whose.

Dancingintherain09 · 26/04/2026 17:53

No, but I'd judge a person who looked down or judged someone poorly for doing so.

Trishyb10 · 26/04/2026 17:55

I can afford to buy designer clothes, but… i,d rather spend my cash on coffess, treats, days out.. and i,m big enough and proud enough to tell folk most of my clothes are cheap charity shop finds, and dont give a toss what anyone thinks, hold your head up high, any remarks is THEIR problem not yours 💋

TwinklySquid · 26/04/2026 17:56

I’d rather spend more money on things that last like a bag, than clothes. So no, j wouldn’t judge at all.

SunshineStarGazer · 26/04/2026 17:58

No, as long as the clothes suit you, flatter your shape, item colour suits skin tone doesn't matter where you buy from Tesco, Vinted, Shein...I buy from all 🙂

Who the fuck ( that’s worth being Friends with ) ,actually judges someone on what brand of clothes they wear ??

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 26/04/2026 18:14

No. I buy my clothes from Sainsbury's, a friend bought me an Asda tracksuit when I was staying with DS2 in hospital and needed a change of clothes, I own 2 pairs of Nike trainers which DS2 gave me when he outgrew them, everything else is supermarket.

NeedWineNow · 26/04/2026 18:45

No, I wouldn’t. My very glam and expensively clad old boss always loved my dresses which invariably came from Sainsbury’s or Primark, and then went and bought them herself.

RebeccaRedhat · 26/04/2026 18:50

Not at all. For a very long time i was very overweight and bought clothes for me when I was out food shopping. I never made special trips to get me something nicer. Now ive lost weight i do take a little more pride in my appearance, but I would never know if someone was wearing Tesco or designer. And there there are some lovely items in the supermarkets at rhe moment.

Nevermind31 · 26/04/2026 18:52

No. It is behaving not clothes that I judge….

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 26/04/2026 19:06

No.
The other way round. The people l know who buy some designer clothes or well known status labels have usually been hoodwinked into thinking that are savvy. And have taste and look great and better than you.

They usually don't have a great deal.of style and taste

And can't team up cheaper and unusual.items.to look good.

It is like a safety blanket for them

They like to boast about how much they have paid for their latest acquisitions.
But that is up to them.. Each to their own clobber and gear as they used to say in the Sixties.

Run of the mill, everyday cheaper branded mass market clothes are fine by me. I've been wearing them them for years and will happily continue to do so

Glad Rags Forever.

Most people I know shop at supermarkets and cheaper clothes shops for stuff….. I don’t know anyone who wear posh clothes unless they’re from Vinted or a charity shop!
