AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · 25/04/2026 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

@Ireallywantadoughnut36-- yep Timmy's is TH. I really miss a proper greasy spoon breakfast ( I'm a Brit in Canada). I was interested in what Timmy's serve because one opened up near my mum and I was telling her different things to try but they didn't seem to have and Tim's classics. Last time I came 🏡 I really struggled to find a coffee shop that had cream for coffee.

I think it would be more of a problem if it wasn't out of character. I wouldn't normally have a pint at 9.30am but might be swayed if I was in 'Spoons.

riceuten · 26/04/2026 22:19

Not for me at that time, but I am not going to judge you...

If it was a one off and I wasn't planning on drinking any more alcohol for the rest of the day? Sure. I'd happily wash down a cooked breakfast with a pint of cider. I could imagine myself doing that sitting outside on a nice, warm, sunny morning.

Other than the time of day what's so different about alcohol with breakfast over drinking alcohol with any other meal anyway? Is it only when breakfast ticks over to brunch it suddenly becomes more acceptable?

Theslummymummy · 26/04/2026 23:18

Can you not just say the chain? Nothing bad will happen

In Italy this morning the entire Piazza appeared to be on Aperol Spritz or Espresso Martini.

Spoons is my second favourite breakfast after parkrun (Tim hortons is my fave). Often see people drinking at that time. Usually either old men or groups that are obviously using it as a meeting point before getting a bus or train to a stag/hen/birthday celebration. I'm more annoyed that the government have decided I'd get fat if I have the unlimited hot chocolate at spoons. I don't like tea or coffee.

Last year we went to Belfast on an early flight and at first I felt a bit strange having a pint at 7AM at the airport, but soon got into it (airports have no time zones - even though it was a domestic flight). It's not usual behaviour and I can't see the issue on occasion.

I wondered why they stopped doing the unlimited hot chocolate! Now I know. Bastards!

@Growlybear83 " I very very rarely drink alcohol (maybe three or four times a year) and just about the only time I do is if I’m having breakfast at weatherspoon’s "

I feel like I'm missing out on something. Can we start a fry up & pint Mumsnet meet up at Spoons.

Ooh, yes please!

DS was a few weeks old the first time I took him to a Spoons. I used to live about a three minute walk from one, and I was struggling with feeding myself properly, so went there for food. I had the mixed grill, which they don't do anymore, but I definitely needed the protein.

Sounds like a couple of All Inclusive Hotels l have visited in the Caribbean over the years.

Get a drink 24 hours a day Very popular at breakfast. Hair of the dog etc.

liveforsummer · 27/04/2026 03:09

Surely it’s a good thing that it’s out of character?!. Fine occasionally, every morning would be another matter

sashh · 27/04/2026 04:37

I've only ever had champagne with breakfast. I was flying home from Australia so the rules certainly didn't apply.

I used to live in Oxford, on May Day the pubs all opened for breakfast at 8.00am.

Riapia · 27/04/2026 05:43

Breakfast and Guinness, that’s a New Year’s Day tradition. The new year looks much brighter.

Myli1 · 27/04/2026 08:04

Personally I find drinking alcohol with breakfast pretty grim, although tbf you’d probably need something strong to wash down the horrible microwaved slop served up in Wetherspoons.

Wetherspoon breakfasts aren't microwaved. Potentially the beans will be but the rest will be cooked on a grill. I think for the price, the breakfasts are fine.

SpryTaupeTurtle · 27/04/2026 08:22

I don't really understand why so many people think having one pint of Guinness in the morning is grim. It's fine if its 10pm but not 10am? We aren't talking about someone chugging down a bottle of vodka for breakfast. It's one pint.

What crap. And how on earth do you microwave fried eggs, toast, crispy bacon?

Deboragh · 27/04/2026 08:39

busyd4y · 25/04/2026 12:15

Why is that? Is there a reason we should be boycotting them?

Not really! some people just have their heads too far up they're own arses.

Yes the ‘food’ certainly is crap. All pre-cooked off-site and then shipped in and re-heated. Personally I wouldn’t even let my dog go near it.

I think it’s probably more to do with not wanting to put money in the pocket of the owner, Tim Martin.

No it's not. Some of the breakfasts are really nice. The smashed avocado muffin. The vegan sausages and rolls /sandwiches. I don't eat everything on the menu, I'm vegan and I don't like all the vegan options (preference) but there's plenty I can eat on the menu.

I went out with my mum on Saturday - we used a voucher for a gastropub. The food was astonishing and it was great value for what we had. Had we not had that voucher some of the main courses would have been 50 quid

There's obviously reasons that people use Wetherspoons - cost. Not everyone has the money to go out and spend 20 quid on a breakfast

Martin only owns around 25 per cent of the company. I don't get that sense from the posts on here. People calling folk who go to Spoons chavs has very little to do with whether people like Tim Martin in my view

Jewelanemone · 27/04/2026 09:05

Hillarious · 25/04/2026 13:23

Yes, the Wetherspoons hotel in Salisbury was great. Especially as they gave me a discount on our second room - “not your fault you have three children”, they said. I wasn’t going to argue. Similarly, no pint for me with breakfast though.

'Not your fault you have three children'? Whose fault is it, then? 😆

I didn't mean the food is crap. I meant the comment was rubbish. As is yours. Our local Spoons had an open plan kitchen and you can actually see the stuff being cooked on the griddle

Ah well each to their own I guess. If you’re happy with sticky carpets, stale beer, microwaved pig swill and rubbing shoulders with chavvy riff-raff then Wetherspoons is certainly the place for you.

I have around 5 Spoons local to me & none of them are like this. And you're still insisting it's microwaved food even though I've seen that it isn't
