AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · Yesterday 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

Although… I’m assuming Wetherspoons, and for that YABU!!

Why? What’s wrong with Wetherspoons?

Some MNetters get snobby about it.

Often the same MNetters who are chugging down booze at 6.30am on Christmas morning.

RawBloomers · Yesterday 18:30

Since it’s out of character I don’t think it’s an issue. If you were doing it every morning it would be.

Tim Martin’s aggressive marketing of Brexit. Nothing ‘snobby’ about finding that unsavoury.

Plenty of people do it at airports. Nothing grim about it

Nothing grim about it

In your opinion.

To plenty of people, it is grim.

Just as grim as sitting at the airport at 4am, with a pint in a death grip.

And I know you didn’t make the comment, but never have I ever seen any of the locals in France, Italy etc have a pint with their morning croissant. The only people I have ever seen have a pint with breakfast in Europe, are Brits.

Again, grim.

Grim, grim, grim.

Oh come on let's face it.

If Tim Martin was the founder of the Ivy, not so many MNetters would have a problem with that.

It's because Spoons is considered 'chavvy' by a lot of wannabees who can't admit that, otherwise they'd look like a knob.

So they got with the TM angle instead.

Growlybear83 · Yesterday 18:44

LemonTyger · Yesterday 16:37

It definitely isn’t 😂

OP, I would be concerned for a friend or relative doing this unless it was some sort of special occasion/ celebration breakfast. I can understand why your husband was concerned and probably concerned you might be a secret drinker/ high functioning alcoholic. I’m not saying you are, but it’s totally understandable he’s concerned, drinking with breakfast is an odd thing to do!

Only on Mumsnet would there be a suggestion that someone who has a very rare drink at breakfast time could be perceived as being a secret drinker or high functioning alcoholic 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

So much snobbery about Spoons . Nothing wrong with their sausages.

Not saying they are significantly different to other grim sausages, but they are not objectively good products.

Obviously you can eat whatever you like, but it's not an unknown that they sell cheap food products.

Growlybear83 · Yesterday 18:46

@newornotnewThe food at Wetherspoon’s may be cheap but wherever Ive ever eaten there has been really nice.

I suppose people dislike places for all sorts of reasons.

But personally, I avoid Wetherspoons like the plague because:

  1. The food is absolutely shite; and
  2. Being around people drinking pints with their breakfast isn’t my thing. It’s the kind of environment I like to avoid.

Why does that make me look like a knob?

I stand by my statement that the type of sausages they serve are grim!

Beer at breakfast used to be very common, but not for along time. In your case it seems like a one off treat. Not a big deal. 1 pint? Please. Maybe DP was just a bit envious of you having a good time without him. He is not your father. Tell him, “Thanks for your concern, but I’m fine.”

Did you accidentally leave 'chavvy' off your list?

If not and you don't think Spoons customers are chavvy, why have you assumed that makes you look like a knob?

Either you didn't read my post or I'm missing something completely?

Is there something wrong with finding a place chavvy and wanting to avoid it?

I’m not seeing the problem.

harriethoyle · Yesterday 19:08

I do think drinking alcohol at 9.30 in the morning is questionable BUT I know I have my own triggers around this because of addiction issues in my immediate family. So I can’t give an unbiased view.

@Growlybear83 " I very very rarely drink alcohol (maybe three or four times a year) and just about the only time I do is if I’m having breakfast at weatherspoon’s "

I feel like I'm missing out on something. Can we start a fry up & pint Mumsnet meet up at Spoons.

Could have done, about ten to fifteen years ago. Now though, you’d have to add in a punch up too.

Yes.

Only knobs look down on people and places and call them chavvy.

I can understand now why you assumed you are one.

They?

I’m talking about why I won’t go there.

If it helps, I won’t go to the Ivy either. My son worked there when he was at university; the food wasn’t worth what it cost, even with his discount.

Nothing to do with snobbery whatsoever; I just disagree vehemently with TM’s ‘principles’. He didn’t exactly cover himself with glory during the pandemic either.

I do too.

But check out Mumsnet on Christmas Eve, and so many are looking forward to alcohol with breakfast the next day.

Bucks Fizz or Mimosas are absolutely my favourite with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for special occasion breakfasts. Maybe I’m an alcoholic, if so, I’m past caring.

Fair enough.

I don't see that as any different to someone drinking a pint at that time of the morning, even though I've never been a daytime drinker.

YANBU as long as not all of the time! I’d happily have champagne or prosecco with breakfast as a treat so this is no different

Oh, yes, I agree, it’s just I don’t like the taste of beer and I like Champagne a lot. But it’s the same principle.

I live in a town where there are only a couple of other pub options than Wetherspoons. There are also some Wetherspoons which aren't "chavvy". The one on Lothian Road in Edinburgh is spectacular and there are some really nice ones dotted around the UK.

My local one looks like a school dinner hall but I certainly wouldn't say everyone who goes in them are "chavs"

I've been to the Mile Castle in Newcastle a few times. It looks great after the refurb and today my mum and I tried to get into the counting house in Glasgow but it was completely mobbed. Busier than I have ever seen it

For me. I tend to go to Spoons more when I'm away from home and want to try and keep to a budget.

Spoons was so busy today my mum and I went somewhere else. It was 16 quid for two glasses of wine - if it had been less busy we would have got the same for around 9 quid. I do also try and support local pubs but for some people money is a factor
