AIBU for having a pint with breakfast in town?

Educata · 25/04/2026 11:59

Just back from a trip into town to meet my friend for breakfast.

We went to a well known pub chain - both had a fry up each, washed down by a coffee and a pint (Guiness for me, cider for my friend).

DP has declared that very out of character and not a great way to start the day.

AIBU?

Ah well each to their own I guess. If you’re happy with sticky carpets, stale beer, microwaved pig swill and rubbing shoulders with chavvy riff-raff then Wetherspoons is certainly the place for you.

Now there you have it. You think people that go to Wetherspoons are chavvy riff raff. I'm not a chav. If I go there I go because I don't have lots of money spare.

Fair enough. If I don’t have a lot of money I simply stay at home and cook (much better) food.

There are times where people will want to go out and meet up with friends and not want to spend twice the price elsewhere for food or drink. I live in a medium sized town that has limited options. There are five pubs in the town centre in the town next to me. One doesn't do food. One only recently started doing so. The other is spectacularly busy as it does food and also shows football.

I don't actually go to pubs much but I can understand why if people are being asked to pay 16 pounds for two glasses of wine (which my mum and I did on Saturday as we literally couldn't get in to Wetherspoons) compared with with 8 pounds in a Wetherspoons its pretty obvious why some people will gravitate towards Wetherspoons

Maybe view his comment as concern rather than judgement. It's easy to slide down the alcohol imbibing path. For me ,as a reformed heavy drinker, I'd consider anything before lunch to need thinking about.

9.30am? Yes it’s grim

'Not your fault you have three children'? Whose fault is it, then? 😆

With a discount pending it wasn’t the right time to own up.

Her DP said it was "Very out of character" though so hardly sounds a regular occurrence.
As a one off I can't see the harm.

Growlybear83 · 27/04/2026 11:38

This thread is mad. What is the difference between having an occasional pint as part of a social breakfast out with a friend at 9.30 in the morning or with a meal at 9.30 in the evening? Most people aren’t going to be pissed on a pint, whatever the time of day.

Lookingdownthebarrell · 27/04/2026 11:43

Well is it out of character? Do you thin it a heathy way to start a day?

I don’t think you’re BU to do so. And Unless he’s having a huff or being weird about it he’s not being unreasonable saying it.

I don’t usually even on a weekend, but Christmas mornings we have a champagne breakfast 😬

TeaDrinkings · 27/04/2026 11:58

Enjoy!

I normally have a whiskey in my coffee if I have breakfast at a 'Spoons. Sometimes more than one!

Our local Spoons is actually lovely.

9.30am? Yes it’s grim

What time does it cease to be grim?
11am brunch with the girls
2pm- afternoon tea with prosecco
6pm- evening meal out?

It was one drink in the company of a friend with breakfast on a weekend, so unlikely to be drunk and could have been fully functional the rest of the day
If it was before work on her own, a bit more concerning
Personally wouldn't consider it 'grim' unless she was drinking the beer out of a shoe or something

This is such a classless comment.

People go to Wetherspoons because you can get a reasonably priced meal and a drink in the community. Many of the pubs are in beautuful buildings that have been restored to a high standard.

I don't know what makes you so insecure that you need to be so judgemental - I am certainly not a "chav", and tend to eat out in more high end places, but I certainly do not look down on anyone who goes to Wetherspoons, and have even partaken in the allegedly grim breakfast pint myself.

I agree. The food isn't great, mainly because there's nothing that really grabs me any more, having had most things on the menu over the years! But their fish, chips & mushy peas is really good. Love their breakfast wrap too with unlimited hot drinks. They've recently brought in pink coladas & Long Island iced teas, both absolutely lovely & a steal at about £4.50. I paid £12 for a very small, sub standard cocktail recently, it was mostly ice!

BiscuitsCheeseBiscuits · 27/04/2026 18:49

@DoubleDoubleDown Not sure on the full menu, but I enjoy a grilled cheese, sometimes with ham, sometimes just cheese mood dependant and a hot chocolate. They are the nicest hot chocolates I have found with Maccy D's coming a close second

@AndromedaBlack I know. Like the sugar tax, the government have decided to ban unlimited drinks for some things like hot chocolate in spoons. Nowt stopping anyone from putting lots and lots of sugar in a drink though.

Over here, if alcohol is added to breakfast, we call that brunch.

In the future, for a morning get together, you are meeting your friend for "brunch."

That was exactly my thinking!

ok if you meet at 7.30 and finish by 9 it’s a bit hard to call it brunch. But would you really have a pint at that time…

I don't know, restaurants here can have hours long waits, very full. People in the know go early and grab a table, especially if there's no reservation. There's an "allegiance" to brunch because it's a little bit festive, celebratory, and relaxing, welcome back, first day of school for the children, it's Tuesday, finished streaming my show, etc.. . .

Some mumsnetters are obsessed with the word ‘grim’

i bet they’ve never encountered anything actually grim in their life

Well in Spain you regularly see old timers sat in the fishing village near me with a breakfast beer or a brandy with their morning coffee.

Surprised by so much love for Spoons after the way they treated their staff during the pandemic.

Really! And how exactly did they treat their staff during the pandemic? Please enlighten us. Would it have been the bs printed in some arsewipe red tops, who he took to court and they had to print apologies admitting it was untrue. Is that what you talking about?? Or do you know something different from the rest of us?

He made some comments about them getting jobs elsewhere but that doesn't mean they weren't paid on furlough - they were paid 80 percent of their wages - there was a backlash and I'm sure he realised that he was wrong

I'm not a chav. I'm working class. There's a difference in my view. As I said before I live in a town where there are few pubs. Some are football pubs (and not the team I support) so I don't really go in. I do support other pubs too, local ones but if you don't have much cash spare and I don't - why would I pay 6 quid for a glass of wine when I can get it for just over 3 quid in wetherspoon

My brother doesn't go in Spoons much either. He tends to go when he's travelled to watch our football team at an away game (at Aberdeen) and so do I

He's not a chav. He works full time. He owns his own home. (I don't). None of his football pals are chavs either. I don't turn into the great unwashed as soon as I set foot in Spoons. That notion is ridiculous

SpryTaupeTurtle · 27/04/2026 23:11

I also don't do breakfast pints as I'm in Scotland and most spoons apart from one I think except airports don't sell booze until 11am. However. I can guarantee you that when I go and watch my team play at home fans will be drinking from around midday onwards. It doesn't make people chavs. It doesn't make their lives revolve around alcohol. Some people go out once a week and have a couple of pints on a Saturday or Sunday

I actually see a lot of disabled people in my local spoons. Some out with friends. Some out with support workers. Older people too

In the 25 years that there's been a Spoons in my home town I have seen one fight - and it was pensioners that caused it. I used to work pub doors and I can say this with conviction. We saw more trouble at so called posher places than we ever did at Spoons

Worked at one Spoons pub for a year. Absolutely no problems at all. Huge mix of people. Tourists. Students. Pensioners.

@user2848502016

well you know then that having a pint with breakfast is in no way “grim”. If OP had ten pints then vommed them back up into a pint glass, that would be grim, well and truly.
