What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

Why do people eat sandwiches with a knife and fork

I've actually done this when either I've overfilled it or the bread is floppy and the filling is mushy, like bacon and fresh fried tomatoes. They always seem to collapse on me so a knife and fork is easier! It does feel quite odd doing it though! 🤣

Because it looks dirty, like you have just got out of bed and gone out within a shower. If you are happy for people to think that then crack on.

Some people wear the same PJs all day and night for about 5 days. Yuck

People who have their speaker on their phone whilst making a phone call in public. I can’t stand it. I was recently in hospital trying to recover from quite major surgery and the other women in my bay were on loud speaker whilst on the phone. It drove me insane. I don’t want to hear other people’s phone conversations.

Once my mum was in hospital and the lady next to her did this. It was either loud FaceTime calls or looping videos on social media with annoying music. Once she fell asleep with the same video playing on a loop. I was really close to throwing her phone out of the window but luckily a staff member came and switched it off 🤣

i get it is boring and lonely but just get some fucking headphones!!

FTHC · 24/04/2026 20:48

People who spend £40+ on a gig ticket just to have a full blown conversation throughout the whole thing.
And why do they always stand near me 😒
Ditto get so pissed they're not likely to remember it.

Why do people not reverse park in supermarket carparks and on driveways ? So much safer for children walking past driveways if cars are not reversing out.

The supermarket car park ideally want the boot to be accessible. People who reverse park in supermarkets, unless buying a bag of shopping or in those car parks where there is a gangway between rows, are a pain.

As all my cars have trolley height scrapes and dents caused by people who reverse park so have to squeeze the trolley between my car and theirs

I now live in a civilised place where general waste is collected twice a week, but when I lived in a flat with no balcony and general waste was once a FORTNIGHT, the thought of missing the collection was a huge stress.

I sympathise with your stress. Things could be festering in a general waste bin for up to 4 weeks here in a black sack here if one collection is missed.

I've a garden but it's not particularly nice having rubbish around.

BountifulPantry · 24/04/2026 20:55

I think it's odd when people take work so seriously. It's one thing wanting to do a good standard, professional job and its another thing when people are obsessive. Re-phrasing perfectly decent sentences, being overly pedantic, taking every tiny comment very personally etc.

I honestly wish we could start every meeting by saying "Right everyone. In 100 years we'll all be dead and in 200 years no-one will really remember we existed. So let's all just get this done sensibly shall we?"

Rach247 · 24/04/2026 20:58

@Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes OP I sometimes put my bins out early - usually because I’m in a rare productive mood and generally getting various things done, and sometimes because I love chucking things away and getting rid of stuff, and getting the bins out feels like a small achievement. Sometimes I need that.

Namechangerage · 24/04/2026 21:01

ThatLilacTiger · 23/04/2026 12:20

Wtf, because it's a bin. It gets minging by virtue of being a bin. Even recycling bins get minging and some people also dispose of things like nappies in their black bags. If you don't clean them regularly you're going to end up washing maggots out of them in the summertime.

Never had maggots in my years of nappies and 2 summer babies / heatwaves! Everything bagged up appropriately and food waste in the outside food caddy which is collected weekly.

Why do my neighbours have 3 cars when there are only 2 adults and none of the kids are close to driving age?

Both of my NDNs have 4 each for 2 drivers! No idea why!

There were two or three car thefts in our street and the two surrounding it about 3 years ago. Police gave the advice to not reverse park on your drive as reversing off is more of a faff for a potential thief. As for the supermarket, surely it’s very obviously to leave the boot accessible.

Hmm I don’t know why people on Mumsnet make massive assumptions about people they don’t know?! Sounds like they are just being sociable and neighbourly! And I say that as someone who is quite shy!

Agree with this! It’s weird to assume they’ve timed their walks around people too

PersephoneParlormaid · 24/04/2026 21:04

My DF used to get anxious about getting his bins out. Once they were out he could relax. I think it was a getting older thing.

starstar84 · 24/04/2026 21:04

People who sit on buses flicking through videos and reels with their phone on loud.

my new move is to stare at them until they notice me and just keeping looking in their eyes until they get the hint. It actually works a fair amount of the time.

Rach247 · 24/04/2026 21:04

@Gwenhwyfar serious question - do women get fat when their periods stop? I knew it was harder to keep weight off when you’re older, but didn’t realise it was a specific menopause thing.

I would like to know why my husband closes the plug in the bathroom sink when he brushes his teeth. He then leaves the plug closed and wanders off, so the sink has an inch of of toothpaste spit and water which I have to put my fingers in to open the plug and drain away. Just why? There's absolutely no need to close the plug when brushing your teeth. He appears to be as baffled as I am as to the reasoning behind it.

Could you use his toothbrush to take the plug out? 😆

Hahaha. I can be a pedant. I’m going to try and remember this!

faggotsandmushypaes · 24/04/2026 21:06

People who pile their plates high with food from a buffet and barely eat,any of it. Also people taking food that has been specifically labelled as gluten free or whatever, leaving those who are coeliac or have a specific dietary restriction with sod all to eat.

dentalflosser · 24/04/2026 21:11

3GoldenLamps · 23/04/2026 13:04

Also people who brag about how they only wash once a week. One of my colleagues talks about how she only showers once a week on a Sunday and 'no-one can tell'. We can. Really.

(Okay, that IS judgy but I share an open plan office with her and by Friday things are getting unpleasant).

Does she not even have a wash in the sink? Armpits and lady garden? That must be pretty nasty in summer!

Taytocrisps · 24/04/2026 21:12

Mannersareeverything · 23/04/2026 16:46

Drink alcohol
I don't get it.
Mostly tastes nasty, gives you a headache, you can't drive which is inconvenient & expensive.

Alcohol tastes quite nice actually. I'm not a fan of beer (beer tastes nasty to me , although I'm sure other people love it). but I like wine and you can get sweet drinks too. I've just had a blue lagoon with ice.

It doesn't give you a hangover if you drink a moderate amount. Although I accept that some people go overboard and suffer the consequences.

It's expensive, but cheaper if you buy it from a supermarket.

It gives you a nice buzz and makes you happy, although it can be a depressant if you drink large volumes of it.

MoonWoman69 · 24/04/2026 21:16

TedDog · 24/04/2026 20:34

@ThatLilacTiger Recycling is meant to be fully washed before it goes into the wheelie bin so the recycling bin at least, should always be clean

Unless you have a husband that refuses to wash rubbish! I get to it before he does usually, then we have an argument in which I say that I don't want the recycling bin stinking out and he says it's not me that has to clean it, so it's not an issue! 🙄

Ladymeade · 24/04/2026 21:21

Why do people come and park right next to you when there are plenty of other places?
Why do people come and sit at the table next to you when there are plenty of other tables to choose from?

Both of these boil my p*ss and baffle me in equal measures..

Fffreeeeezing · 24/04/2026 21:23

CoverIt · 23/04/2026 12:40

Oh I’ve just thought of one, it doesn’t annoy me in fact I’m impressed by it:

On a recent transatlantic trip, I was sitting in the aisle seat both times. On neither flight (7 hours each way) did the people by the window/middle seat get up to use the toilet! I didn’t sleep and I would have had to stand up to let them out.

Who are these people with cast iron bladders?!

I was seriously impressed. They were in all cases young - under 30 for sure. I suspect that may have something to do with it 🤣

I’ve done many flights in my life, including a 12hr and a 11hr. I have never been in an aeroplane toilet. The very thought horrifies me, I have a phobia of public loos, I hardly even use the work one’s. I don’t cross my legs the entire time, my body must just ‘know’ and turn the switch off! Have literally never had the urge, my friends and family think I’m mental, obviously

dogsandbudgey · 24/04/2026 21:25

When people don’t indicate, particularly pisses me off when you’ve waited about 10 mins at a junction and the ballbag just sails on round the corner leaving you now waiting another 20 mins

I’ve had this, when they are sitting right next to me and their phone is in my ear. So I start watching my Instagram reels on full volume and stare at them (yes I’m that person 🤣 but they do stop ) then I turn mine off once they do!
