What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

Speaker phone in public - if (for example) watching the kids at park, on speaker phone I'm not blocking one ear or my vision so I can watch them better, and I don't feel it's rude because lots of people are their chatting, which in terms of noise is no different to me chatting via the phone., vcr

Why do people have metal rings/studs etc pierced into their noses, lips, tongues, eye sockets, navels? How come they don't realise how pathetic and hideous they look and how they are negatively judged by others. Ear lobes I get, earrings are attractive.

I have a nose piercing. All a matter of taste.

Women have pierced their noses for about 5,000 years.

It’s in the Bible (Genesis): Abraham’s servant gives a nose ring to Rebekah.

Are there other places you would do this?

It is different. For example, when my mum was in hospital, if the lady next to her had a visitor in person it was much less annoying/disruptive than her constantly on video calls. It’s a very loud, tinny noise. The person is often talking much louder as they can’t read the room on the other side. A visitor in person would (hopefully) regulate their voice. Not so relevant for the park but in many other places it does make a difference.

Echobelly · 24/04/2026 21:34

Why do so many people in supermarkets and at Costco buy packs and packs and packs of small bottles of mineral water? We have potable water. In taps. For free. You can buy reusable bottles if you want to take it anywhere.

RJ2023 · 24/04/2026 21:36

My local Sainsbury's car park (London Road, Ipswich for anyone vaguely interested). Huge numbers of parking spaces but instead of using one people now just dump their car outside the doors to the Supermarket. Consequently anyone trying to navigate the car park in a normal way can't get past their car.

Sainsbury's - if you are reading this - please tow away / destroy these cars!

Why do people think it’s okay to drop litter?

WittyTaupeFox · 24/04/2026 21:39

Things people do that baffle me - not realise the link between the food they eat and how they feel in body and mind.

I feel that now as someone who was blind to the impact I was having on my health until a few years ago.

Ireolu · 24/04/2026 21:40

I dont understand people that are boastful. Its so offputting. We have this, that, well monied etc. What's interesting is that majority of the people in our circle have similar backgrounds. Everyone earns well and that is fine. I don't think some people cope well with realising they are really not that special.

nutella8 · 24/04/2026 21:42

Parents who let their kids turn a restaurant table or plane seat into a disaster zone and then just walk away, no attempt to tidy, no awareness. That kind of behaviour just signals thoughtless crass entitlement. No class.

The noise from a speaker is different though.

ZiggyZowie · 24/04/2026 21:43

Kissing ,especially wet ones involving tongues.

it's so gross

katseyes7 · 24/04/2026 21:46

I've had a navel piercing for almost 30 years.
I doubt anyone's repelled by it. l'm not in the habit of showing it off.
I'm 67 and l can count on the fingers of one hand how many people have seen it. I got it because l wanted it.

I’ve had this, when they are sitting right next to me and their phone is in my ear. So I start watching my Instagram reels on full volume and stare at them (yes I’m that person 🤣 but they do stop ) then I turn mine off once they do!

Edited

kindred spirit!! I gave the death stare to a man sitting next to me which is actually a bit psychotic but it did the trick 😂

Disagree, people tend to shout in speakerphone. It’s better if you’re out in the open at least; on buses or trains makes me want to grab it out of their hand and lob it out the window. So rude.

Or they do know but continue to eat it and then complain about it. And yes I know junk food is addictive but it frustrates me when people don’t take responsibility for their own health - mental and physical

Notyouagaindear · 24/04/2026 21:53

People (specifically my in-laws) who have to hold a muster call at PILs house prior to family events. We can’t just meet them at the restaurant/hotel/party after driving for an hour but instead have to first pointlessly assemble in MIL’s kitchen whereupon she will stuff sweets or biscuits into my younger DC, so they won’t eat a proper meal at said event. It’s great when my elder DS brings his girlfriend as it means we have to take 2 cars. DC and I go straight to the venue and DH is free to sit about in MILs kitchen beforehand, to his heart’s content.

I've actually done this when either I've overfilled it or the bread is floppy and the filling is mushy, like bacon and fresh fried tomatoes. They always seem to collapse on me so a knife and fork is easier! It does feel quite odd doing it though! 🤣

That I can understand, dh eats all his sandwiches with a knife and fork no matter what it is, even wraps or burgers, he also eats chicken wings and ribs with utensils,I always thought it was so strange!

I think it's odd when people take work so seriously. It's one thing wanting to do a good standard, professional job and its another thing when people are obsessive. Re-phrasing perfectly decent sentences, being overly pedantic, taking every tiny comment very personally etc.

I honestly wish we could start every meeting by saying "Right everyone. In 100 years we'll all be dead and in 200 years no-one will really remember we existed. So let's all just get this done sensibly shall we?"

Edited

What sort of organisation/sector do you work in?

That sounds a little extreme. I work with lawyers and expect this type of behaviour (except the taking every comment personally) so curious what other organisation goes to these lengths. Academia, journalism?

My DH hides our keys when we go on holiday, you know the keys that are in the sliding doors! If the burglars have broken in dear, they won’t be looking for the keys!

I hide all our keys too.

Burglars do what is known as double-dip. After taking all the valuables, they take a set of keys so that they can come in again at their leisure to steal the brand new items you bought to replace the ones they took the first time.

LalaPaloosa2024 · 24/04/2026 22:09

I agree. A man on a motorbike dud this to me. Empty car park and he parked right next to my car. I couldn’t even open my car door properly!

The bins thing..same in our road. The two retired men put their bins out by 8am to be collected next day...often in their pjs/dressing gowns. They men will then be in and out multi times that day. I think its competitive bin putting out 🤔
They have also taken to stacking the recycling tubs in the same v neat way...and had a discussion about it one evening 😀

The irony is that, if they had a different obsession themselves - say people parking in what they assume is their space, or people not mowing their lawns often enough for their liking - and you put your bins out first thing on the day before bin day you just know they would be the kind of people who would be on at you about how untidy it is and what an inconsiderate neighbour you are, forcing people to have to look at your ugly bins and step around them in the street all day!

@Gwenhwyfar serious question - do women get fat when their periods stop? I knew it was harder to keep weight off when you’re older, but didn’t realise it was a specific menopause thing.

Changing / decreasing hormones can change your body shape. Not for everyone but a lot of women who previously held weight on their hips/thighs now have it on their middle - which is unhealthier. Plus people naturally lose muscle tone as they get older, so they tend to need fewer calories and unless they modify their diet or weight train can also put weight on because of that.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 23/04/2026 12:40

That sounds sensible, but it I hate people parking next to us in a nearly empty carpark at night. I find it quite creepy knowing they've deliberately parked as close to me as possible.

Why do people use self service tills and not put everything straight in the bag? Everything goes on the shelf then they bring out the bags at the end and slowly pack

Ah the self service till one I can answer. Too many issues with it not recognising the weight of your own bag, or thinking that your bag is some unauthorised item you haven’t scanned. Holds everything up while supervisor comes to deal with the “unauthorised item in the bagging area”. So now I scan first and pack after. Trust me, I’m as annoyed by the inefficiency of it as you are.

People who go out for a meal and just eat a few mouthfuls. If not hungry- don’t eat out then
