Things people do that just baffle you

What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

I work in a supermarket and when you ask people ( for example) if they have their loyalty card or if they need any more bags they laugh hysterically! It’s always the older generation too ( sorry to generalise, but it is)
I don’t know why that makes you laugh Doris but it certainly baffles me

ShiraShira · 25/04/2026 07:41

I don’t understand people asking women if they’re pregnant, or telling people struggling to conceive “just relax and it’ll happen”, or telling people with cancer to go on a detox / any other type of “natural cure”. Don’t they have any empathy or any type of filter? Don’t they realise how much these comments hurt? People in their 20s and 30s getting Botox.

I’m baffled when pensioners and elderly people who don’t work choose to do their weekly shop at the weekend. Is it just habit? When I was on maternity it was a relief to be strolling around an empty weekday morning supermarket. Supermarkets around us are rammed at the weekend and sometimes run out of produce.

I am talking about people standing in the middle of a small aisle bent over staring at shelves, blocking the entire aisle, which seems to be the fashion. Somehow people managed to shop without doing this for many decades.

It's never been any different in my time, except that ranges and choice have increased massively so obviously it takes more time to find or choose between items.

What do you think the people "staring at shelves" are doing? I think most people call it something like "doing the shopping" or "buying the groceries".

We don't all have equally good eyesight, cognition and mobility.

Maybe they just got into a habit?

I’m decades away from being a pensioner but I shop Saturdays, batch cook on Sundays.

I don’t see why I should change that habit when I’m retired.

There's a misunderstanding of what an escalator is. It's for everybody and not just for disabled people. I always choose the escalator. I most feel the need for it if I'm out shopping and have tired legs, but I use them all the time.

Exactly. Escalators are not only for disabled people, they are for everyone so all this "you must have a valid reason to use one" is nonsense 🤣.

I dont understand why people are arguing they are for people who are disabled anyway- you cant take a wheelchair on an escalator FFS and because they move so fast they could in fact be dangerous if you had impaired mobility.

The lift- now that is for disabled people and people with prams because its wheelchair accessible and has enough room in it for mobility aids.

Judgy thread

Yes, and so what. People are allowed to be irritated at just about anything not least selfishness or stupidity.

Because it's much easier and quicker to shop during the week. From finding a parking space, to getting those last boxes of soya milk before someone else grabs them, to having a better choice of fresh produce that other people haven't picked through, to not queuing at the till, and finally not queuing to get out of the car park.

But surely in today's world of phone reminders and smart watches and Alexa's and googles etc etc and you set a reminder for yourself?
My Google reminds me every Monday night at 5pm, 6pm and 7:30pm 🤣

But maybe if they're older people, they can't deal with it.
They do have a daughter in her 20s at home though!

I often put the bins.out early if I happen to be in the.vicinity of where they are the day before if I remember thay bin day is soon (ie within 2 days)

I regularly forget which day of the week is, have done since childhood so not a new thing . Yes I have reminders on my phone and email but I have so many reminders for everything nowadays, things still get missed.

I sometimes get a reminder.on.my phone when I am doing something else and think." I'll do that next, then forget. So often I just put them out when I remember before the reminders so it is another job for the week done

If I had 3 Google.reminders a week in one night just for the bins, I cant imagine how many reminders I'd need for other life tasks.

I'm don't have a smart watch or Alexa or anything like that. Why would I, I get tired just thinking about how.many more things it.could ' organise me' for

If an older person has memory problems it’s very likely that they couldn’t set up an alert on a smartphone which they most certainly won’t have 🤦🏼‍♀️

You can obviously do whatever you like but whenever ive gone shopping on a Monday daytime for example I have found the experience to be so much less stressful - its quiet, so easy to park, no queues, and relatively calm compared to the busyness and hustle of a weekend.

Not really sure why anyone would prefer being jostled about or wait ages for a parking space when they dont have to is all 🤷‍♀️

Loomis · 25/04/2026 08:20

People who don't season their food. FIL doesn't even put salt on his chips. Should be a jailable offence.

How do you know they don't work? Or they could be caring for a partner, and get a bit of respite at the weekend when their family are not at work. Or... so many possibilities...

Maybe they've been busy all week looking after grandchildren. 😂

I have a neighbour who seems to have made it her life's mission to run around and cater to another neighbour. The second neighbour is a very nasty piece of work and he belittles her and calls her 'stupid old woman'. Yet she trots after him and when he is away goes in and opens and shuts curtains and turns lights on and off because he's too much of an arse to get a burglar alarm. She;s 10 years older than him and although he is fit enough to cycle everywhere and runs half marathons she fetches his groceries for him in one of those little wheelie trolly things and puts them away for him. I sometimes hear him shouting at her for putting something in the wrong place. He's very deaf and so he shouts and we can hear him perfectly well. Once he was sitting outside and she went over and he said 'Get your fat arse up that step ladder and wash those windows'. She's not being paid, or anything, so it's not like this is a job, she's in her 80s FFS. He just orders her around all the time. It's beyond me why she lets any of that happen. Her son is a good friend of ours and he is baffled also and keeps telling her to stop. She;s clearly getting some sort of emotional fulfillment out of it- her late husband was similar so I think she's sort of sticking with what she knows. (It;'s not a romantic relationship.)

Is it a sadomasochistic relationship or is it abuse?

  • Sadomasochism: Negotiated, consensual, brings pleasure to both parties, and has clear boundaries.
  • Abuse: Non-consensual, intended to harm or belittle, lacks boundaries, and creates a cycle of fear rather than trust.

People who “style” their homes with “influencer” tat - Mrs Hinch and Stacey Solomon type stuff. Then post pictures on their instagrams showing their houses all looking the bloody same!! I’ve never woken up and thought “I want a duvet cover with Stacey Solomon’s dog on it” 🤦‍♀️

And why do my neighbours always leave their wheelie bins out for days after collection day even though they are young and fit, have two teenage DC and they all walk past them in multiple occasions.

Ladygodalmighty · 25/04/2026 08:32

AwesomeChampagne · 23/04/2026 12:29

Vaping

In a similar vein to parking next to people in an empty car park, booking a seat in an almost empty cinema and someone sitting next to you

I was once in the cinema and there were 3 people including myself and someone decided to book the seat next to me

Exactly this wtf!

Chickoletta · 25/04/2026 08:37

It baffles me why people go to a beauty spot - beach, National
Trust property etc - and eat their picnic next to their car in the car park.

Ladygodalmighty · 25/04/2026 08:42

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 23/04/2026 12:40

That sounds sensible, but it I hate people parking next to us in a nearly empty carpark at night. I find it quite creepy knowing they've deliberately parked as close to me as possible.

Why do people use self service tills and not put everything straight in the bag? Everything goes on the shelf then they bring out the bags at the end and slowly pack

Nearly every time I put my bags on first, up comes the "unrecognised item in the bagging area." and I need to wait for a shop assistant to allow me to proceed, so I no longer choose "using my own bag" and go straight to scanning my shopping

bafta16 · 25/04/2026 08:48

Why do people look away rather than a simple smile or half raise of a hand. Neighbours I mean.
Must require more effort?

Did the bin actually get emptied? On several occasions, I've left one of mine out because it didn't get emptied. (And the council lied and said it wasn't put out, when I know damn well it was) On principal, I leave it out for the next collection (and because very occasionally they arrange an extra pick-up, and I want to make sure I don't miss it)

Exactly this wtf!

I vape, I'm an ex Smoker of 35 years with multiple quit attempts of up to 2 years. Vaping is the only thing that's kept me off cigs, it's less damaging to me, I can breathe better and I smell better. I don't understand why non smokers start vaping though.

The cinema thing is weird, I have had that happen too.

Having said that.. people who sit in their parked cars with the engine running staring at their phones for ages

That's illegal air pollution

Retired people doing their supermarket shops on Saturdays 🙈.

They are far too busy through the week meeting friends for lunch, bowling, golfing, theatre, cinema, etc, etc, roll on retirement.

PistachioTiramisu · 25/04/2026 08:57

Regarding pensioners doing their shopping at the weekend, it's worth pointing out that some supermarkets do 'specials' at the weekend - maybe these are what they are shopping for?
