Things people do that just baffle you

What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

OP posts:

Wtf, because it's a bin. It gets minging by virtue of being a bin. Even recycling bins get minging and some people also dispose of things like nappies in their black bags. If you don't clean them regularly you're going to end up washing maggots out of them in the summertime.

I have never washed a wheelie bin in my life and have never had maggots.

Absolute waste of time, got enough other shit to do!

Gardenalia · Today 17:23

Why do people have children then don't engage with them eg walk down the street pushing a pram but staring at their phone?

Why would anyone undergo any sort of operation for cosmetic reasons only?Any general anaesthetic carries risk - is cosmetic appearance worth it?

I'm baffled by all-inclusive resorts, spending big sums of money on cars, gambling of any sort and willingly being financially dependent on another living person.

And how could anyone support Trump, Farage, Robinson, Tate or indeed any Fascist? Such people do not consider others as having any rights - and that includes YOU, dumbass!

The bogies I find on the wall of the toilet at work.

Dappy777 · Today 17:25

Modify their car exhaust so it screeches and backfires. Why would you go out of your way to upset and annoy others?

Try having a slight paunch in your early 40s. I wore tighter office clothes then and one woman asked if I was pregnant and got up to offed me her seat. I mean it was kind but I was not pregnant.

If it got me a sit on the tube, I would have just said thank you and sat down haha

Respond to the "i lost 20kg in a week" completely ridiculous AI generated patch adverts on the Internet. Even to click on them, never mind buying any of them!

TheignT · Today 17:30

I put my bins out first thing the day before they are collected. I hate sorting out the bin, two recycling boxes, a food caddy and two bags so I do it to get it done out of the way . We don't have pavements so they are on my property so I don't know why it would bother anyone.

the80sweregreat · Today 17:30

I put my three bins out the night before! Most people do here as they come for the food one very early now.
I like a u tube video as watching how to do something is easier for me than trying to read a manual on it ( I can’t make head nor tale of most manuals , but I think that’s just me tbf!)

LittleMissClutter · Today 17:31

Er, they may be doing a large shop which they don’t want to lug back home. They are planning a boozy evening or a party and buying shed loads of wine.
They’ve got a bad back. Of fallen arches.
They hate walking.
Any of those things.

Nope lol - well apart from they hate walking maybe.

But I've lived here 30 years and most of the neighbours I'm talking about have never been any different.

They'll literally jump in the car to go and buy a pint of milk or a bag of chips from the chippy.

The two teenage lads across the road play rugby with my son, so I'm guessing theirs is a case of lazy-ities.

JohnTheRevelator · Today 17:31

Why is it that on a practically empty bus, someone gets on and sits next to you? Invariably a bloke who likes to 'manspread'.

Mumandcarer80 · Today 17:32

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · Today 11:56

Along a similar theme, why do some people insist on cleaning out their wheelie bins regularly? Even their recycling bin, which should only contain clean, dry waste.

I get that it might need a good hose out very occasionally if it gets really stinky and minging (which shouldn't happen anyway if you use bin bags) ; but it's a bin that's there for rubbish and it lives outside - why does it need to be sparkling clean every time before you dump the next load in it?!

There was a woman who fell in her wheelie bin trying to clean it. 😂😂😂 I do mine once every couple of months with an old mop.

Because they are wankers.

FieryA · Today 17:33

Why do people go shopping without any shopping bags? There is so much plastic and paper wastage with all these unnecessary bags. Plus the cost of buying bags every time. Such a waste!

Queenhecate · Today 17:34

@Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes i drive to the shop because im disabled. I wasn’t aware I had to inform all the nosy judgy neighbours of the nature of my disabilities they could decide whether or not I was allowed to do so.

nasty thread.

ConstanzeMozart · Today 17:34

Similar to the OP, people who don't use earphones on public transport, so we are treated to both sides of their personal conversations/their choice of music/their current favourite TV show or TikTok video.

People who cycle on pavements.

People who don't train or control their dogs. I love dogs, but I don't care if it's friendly, if I'm sitting on the grass in the park with food I don't want it to come and snaffle it/drool over it. Neither do I want the dog my neighbour looks after howling and barking while they have a long chat on the doorstep twice a day two days a week because it hasn't been taught to stand or sit quietly.

katseyes7 · Today 17:35

The people who thought it was fine to plonk their very small child on the checkout conveyor belt '"for a ride".
This happened twice when l was working in a supermarket, and they were genuinely bemused when l asked them to remove the baby from the belt before l'd scan their shopping.

Even after l explained that the baby could potentially fall over (and consequently, off), onto a concrete floor (why anyone would need telling is beyond me).
And the parents whose little one had tights on which could have easily got caught in the workings of the conveyor at the sides or the end.
I was the one being unreasonable, apparently. Not the parents risking their babies' safety.

the80sweregreat · Today 17:37

Oh yes! There is a ‘ souped up’ car near us that loves to show off its screeching and revs at most opportunities.
I do agree that it is wankery behavior, but nobody cares because they can get away with it!

Speaker phone thing could be that they don't know how to turn it off.It just went on and they can't be bothered to turn it off,( me.)

Imisscoffee2021 · Today 17:41

Any out loud phone noise in public bar a ringtone pisses me off royally, it's so obnoxiously selfish and it's on the up, not young people either. The last few people on public transport doom scrolling out loud were in their 50s I'd say, just happily inflicting 5 to 10 second loud sound clips on us, and I can't even drown it out with my own ear buds anymore and my trusty ambient noise app as I have a two year old with me most of the time and need yo hear him.

People who clip toenails or nails on the train, I see it every month or so. Its vile. What are they thinking!?

People who indicate wrong on roundabouts, it's so so frequent and makes me not trust anyone's position or turn signal atm. Last week alone I've had to slam the brakes twice because someone's going round with either no blinker on and exiting 4th exit or they're indicating one way and go another. Are people day dreaming through life?

Gresley · Today 17:47

OP, I do both - put bins out early and use phone on speakerphone. I'm old but not deaf, but have a bad memory. I have to write in my diary which bins go out on which day. I put them out early so that I don't forget later on. Also I wouldn't want to be putting them out in the dark. Once that job is done, I can get on with other things. Also it helps all the other old people in this street who can never remember which bin to put out on what day. I even put my neighbour's garden waste bin out for him because he found it impossible to know what day to put it out (it's fortnightly collections - the other bins alternate on a two weekly basis). I don't need to wash my black wheelie bin as I always put things in bin liners, but I do have to wash out my food-waste bins. I don't wash out my green waste bin which always stinks. As for the phone on speakerphone, I cannot hear what anyone's saying unless it is on speakerphone. But I hardly ever get phone-calls when I'm out and never make them outside. I'm old-fashioned - I don't like using the phone in public! Hope that helps! PS there are no rules about when to put out bins round here, though it would be odd if they were out days before - we might think somebody had died!

Sometimes I forget to pick them up

Mumandcarer80 · Today 17:55

People who sit at a bigger table than they need. DD regularly goes to a local cafe with her carers. She has to have 2 carers sometimes there will be 3 if there’s someone shadowing. This particular day they arrived but there was only tables for 2 people. So staff asked a woman sat alone at a table for 4 if they could have her table. She protested said oh I wanted to sit in the window. She did move eventually.

Or when 1 person sits at a table on a train when there’s only 1 sitting there. I couldn’t leave 1 of my dc sitting separately from me both severely autistic. I had to squeeze the 3 of us onto 2 seats. Also on public transport when parents don’t sit their small child on their knee so someone can sit down.

JudgeJ · Today 17:57

Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes · Today 11:56

It's habit I think. People just leave the house and get into their cars on autopilot.

The first Christmas living in our new-to-us house we did all the cards and I said to OH I'll go and post these, he was putting lights up. I drove into the little town nearby and when I got home OH asked where I'd been. When I told him I'd been down to post the cards he asked why I hadn't used to post box at the end of our drive!

Highway Code rule 201…….and in line with the OP thread, driving forward in and reversing out just baffles me…….particularly when it is perfectly safe to do it the recommended way as it is where we live.

Which reminds me of one of my pet hates. Know it all drivers. You do you.
