Things people do that just baffle you

What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

My SIL does this. Just copies everything I buy. She doesn't even like me.

Once my in-laws were staying with me and I came home to her wearing one of my sports outfits, a top and trousers. Turned out they had gone out and bought it at the shops. She doesn't even do any exercise, just wanted to wear it. They had a cob on with me because I asked her why she had gone into my room and took my clothes.

After many years of this, whenever I have to see her, I just wear jeans and a white T shirt 😄 No more copying.

But surely in today's world of phone reminders and smart watches and Alexa's and googles etc etc and you set a reminder for yourself?
My Google reminds me every Monday night at 5pm, 6pm and 7:30pm 🤣

But maybe if they're older people, they can't deal with it.
They do have a daughter in her 20s at home though!

Baffles me why you care tho

People who go as an extended family to collect children from school baffle me, as do people who go shopping as a family.

People who walk round supermarkets or shops as if in a daze, blocking aisles, standing in front of items that other people need to get to for minutes on end. Just go in, get the items you want, pay for them and leave. It's not rocket science FFS!

People who have dogs and expect other people to love their dogs as much as they do and are confused when they do not.

People who are unable to focus on the task in hand and are constantly distracted.

People who use 10 (or 30, or 300) words to answer a question which could be answered with 1 word.

Noisy people.

Grown men and women who play computer games and talk about them as if they are real.

People who are unable to focus on the task in hand and are constantly distracted.

So those who likely suffer from ADHD?

ButterYellowHair · Today 15:33

People on my course often pipe up to answer other people’s questions really confidently and patronisingly cutting off the actual lecturer. They answer them wrong. I always want to roll my eyes at them.

It baffles me how horrible some Mumsnetters are to people struggling with infertility. Can they honestly not imagine how they would have felt if they hadn’t been able to have their own children?

This! My advice on an infertility matter I posted was that I need therapy ASAP.

FlyingApple · Today 15:35

People who don't want to get along and be generally friendly with everyone but instead create cliques and gossip.

Bloozie · Today 15:35

I understand why people make 4 minute YouTube videos on how to find the filter on your washing machine, but I have no idea who the fuck watches them when diagrams exist.

People who aren't coping that well with one child, marriage already strained, career going down the drain, who then zealously decide to have another baby.

Ella31 · Today 15:38

SquashPenguin · Today 12:35

I think it comes from an ingrained “I’m better than you” stance. They always seem to know better too, like have you thought of adoption?! Horrible.

I've had the same comments since my babies died. I lost twins at birth in late 2023. It was horrific. A stillbirth and a nicu death in 5 days. I've since had two children very soon after. A year apart of each other. I had my baby last week and I've already been told to be grateful for the two I now have. I got terrible baby blues and flash backs to my twins deaths and I was told by a "friend" to move on, they are gone 2 years now. At least you have kids now."

Well I've 4 kids, my two beautiful twins looking down on me and my beautiful living kids who will always know about their baby brothers. Its a pity people cant feel the pain others go through and in our case, I'm sure if they had to give birth to a baby that had died and then three days later have to turn off life support on their second twin, they wouldn't be as judgemental.

You spend a lot of time feeling irritated dont you?Grin

I can answer the game question. It's the same as talking about anything you're watching on a screen. Soaps, reality telly, the latest film. You get into some sort of storyline and if someone else is also into that storyline then they talk about it

Some games have a powerful storyline that turns you inside out. Except you're controlling what you see on the screen. Why do grown men and women watch anything?

My MIL pays a company to do this for her every fortnight 🤣

Baffles me too!

My mum does as well. Clearly more money than sense, although actually she hasn't got that much money to waste. Oh well.

Why do motorists drive forward onto their driveways and then have to reverse into the road??? I’ve witnessed so many near misses on our road alone, I asked one neighbour why he did it…….he said “that’s the correct way to do it”! NO IT ISN’T!!!

I can only speak for myself but I have a two-seater and I have more in front of me than behind. If I drive out of our driveway, because of the way the road bends, my bonnet is halfway across the road before I can see what 's coming. I can see sooner if I reverse.

I do this. But it's a very cursory iron to flatten them down a bit so they fit in the drawer more easily.

I understand why people make 4 minute YouTube videos on how to find the filter on your washing machine, but I have no idea who the fuck watches them when diagrams exist.

To be fair they are really useful. I had to jump start my car from DS’s car and the battery in his car is right at the back of the engine and it’s impossible to attach one of the clamps. Fortunately a helpful passer by pointed us to a piece of metal on the frame that is specifically designed to ground the battery when jump starting. DS also knew that the battery in my car was in the boot, I would have had to Google it if he hadn’t been there.

When we checked online there were loads of how to videos. So we were not the first to be baffled.

So random people on YouTube who have made helpful videos, probably like me, because they have been baffled by the layout of their modern car are my hero’s.

Videos are so much easier to follow than generic diagrams with just arrows and no descriptions. My ch boiler pressure needed topping up the other day. It’s super simple but I only do it once a year, so it’s unnecessary to clutter my already overloaded memory with the details. But it takes me 20mins to read the instructions. A video linked to the online instruction manual would be so much easier.

Maybe that’s an idea for an App.

Passengers can get out before driving forward onto the drive.

Sounds like a right faff. I'd sooner park on the road than have that every time I'm coming home with other people in the car.

Why do people get on almost empty buses and trains and insist on standing near the doors in the way?

Because they are getting off at the next stop. But it's annoying when you want to get out at that stop too and they take ages to get off.

Also people who get up before the stop before yours, but don't actually get off then and stay standing by the door to get off at your station instead. There was a guy who used to do it on my line before covid and he used to leap off the train and jump into what I assume was his mum's car as she drove into the station. It was all timed to the second, but must have been a big stress if the train was late or she was (or if she was early!)

Not RTFT so might have been said already, but my neighbour cleans his car (inside and out) EVERY Sunday afternoon. Spends ages on it. He doesn't have dogs or anything, so I just wonder how dirty it actually gets in a week?

Parking next to me, in an empty car park

No headphones, talking on speakerphone

Allowing kids to run riot, especially in restaurants. Parenting is tough, but you have to do it.

People allowing their dogs to bark like mad.

Agree with the last of these. One of my neighbours was allowing their dog to bark for hours at night. Fortunately another of my neighbours knew who it was (I couldn't work out where the sound was coming from) and had a word with them. But how can you sleep through that yourself? They have a small daughter as well (maybe she sleeps through everything) (and, three cats whose noses must have been put rather out of joint by the arrival of the said noisy dog).

Cyclists who try to squeeze between the kerb and your car at traffic lights, then get first away at the lights and hold traffic back waiting to overtake again.

This is me! If there is space for me to cycle as near to the traffic lights as possible, I will do this.

The path is clear so I will continue to cycle up to the traffic lights. It really shouldn't annoy you as cyclists have as much right to use the road as motorists.
