Things people do that just baffle you

What does either a specific person in your life, or just the general public do, you just don't understand why they do it, and you either can't ask them or you've tried to ask them and they can't tell you?

Write it here and maybe someone else that also does it can tell you why, or has an idea as to why.

Here are mine:

Why do my neighbours across the street bring their bins outside a full 24hrs early? They are retired, home most of the day, go in and out of their house five or six times during that 24hr period, but bring their bins out early Monday morning when they don't get picked up until Tuesday morning?

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

I can't say I'd notice when my neighbours put their bins out. Maybe they're forgetful and just want it done out of the way. I'm about to put mine out ready for tomorrow. Maybe I'm getting old.

Regarding the phone, I put it on speaker just to minimise the microwaves.

Can I request that you (and everyone else who may believe the microwaves are bad for them) get headphones?

We really don't need to hear both sides of your conversations.

There is a recommended SAFE way.

I don't need block capitals. And it's not always possible.

I put our wheelie bins out the day before. There are 2 reasons. I don't want to forget is the first reason. The second reason is they are visible to the taxi driver that that is my house coming back from Asda each week. They have many drivers and not all of them know which is my house.

Eh?

It's quite normal.l for a taxi driver to not know where you live - you just tell them, rather than leaving weird bin signals. What if someone else also has their bins out, or you go to Asda on a different day?

At work I have to ask some very specific and pertinent questions to people. They are yes or no answers. I’d say 70% cannot for the life of them just answer the question. It’s fine to not understand or ask for guidance but I get some very convoluted stories (sometimes after they ask me if it’s relevant and I say it’s not)

Highway Code rule 201…….and in line with the OP thread, driving forward in and reversing out just baffles me…….particularly when it is perfectly safe to do it the recommended way as it is where we live.

And actually I doubt that anyone is actually ‘baffled’. Why not just call it ‘things people do differently to you so you judge them’

Why do people talk on their phones on speakerphone in public, what is the purpose?

Because I can hear much better using 2 ears than just one.

People in large teams calls that post in the chat “thanks that was great, but I’ve got to go to another meeting” or “sorry someone at the door”. I was on a call with 350 people today and a number of people did this. Why? Nobody gives a shit and it’s really distracting to have the chat function pinging away. See also people who type thank you at the end of presentations instead of using the clapping hands thing.

My MIL pays a company to do this for her every fortnight 🤣

Baffles me too!

Wow - I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned my bins out! Very occasionally do the kitchen one.

My ‘why do they do this’ is about me! Why do I waste hours every day on MN or Instagram when I know I’ll be annoyed at myself later as I’ve got plenty more interesting things to do.

Blimms · Today 16:15

I’m baffled as to why people start threads like this, and why you are so baffled by the fact that humans aren’t a hive mind and other people do things differently.

Starlightexpresss · Today 16:16

The main one for me is - why do people get SO furious and angry/aggressive simply because other people do completely insignificant things differently to them?

Eg the timing of when to take your Christmas decs down, or the type of weather you prefer. Ive seen people on here in particular get downright nasty and so aggressive just because other people do or like different things to them. It doesnt affect them in any way so why get so angry about it?

It's baffling to me to get that annoyed with how someone else chooses to live their life that has zero effect on you. Also, isnt it interesting that people are different?- why would you even want everyone to do everything the exact same way like some kind of weird stepford universe

Exactly. It’s so ridiculous and performative.

Its the ones who dont cycle but squeeze alongside "hopping" on one leg down the edge of the pavement that worry me.

Having kids why put yourself thought all that drama.

People who use train toilets and throw toilet paper on the floor instead of flushing it down the toilet

Always trains. Don't think I've seen it in shopping centre or restaurant toilets

I can assure you this also happens in shopping centres, restaurants, pubs, entertainment centres, libraries, airports, even my office block. Anywhere there are toilets used by the public.

When it’s a rare sunny day (Scotland) and our weird neighbour decides to set fire to crap in their garden every bloody time! It gets me so mad having to bring my washing back in again.

What baffles me is - when I'm out walking my dog on a nice day I will met half a dozen dog walkers out at the same sort of time. When it's raining I don't see a soul! Are their dogs all waiting in with their legs crossed, hoping it stops raining? My dog doesn't much like the rain, but she going out!

A lot of dogs don’t like the rain - mine hates it. He always toilets in the garden anyway.

Mine is a working dog, needs the exercise (as all dogs do, surely), she's horrible if she doesn't get a few miles a day. So we go, even if it's raining and she doesn't like the rain because I don't want my house destroyed.

Round me, most dogs are labradors, retrievers and hounds - working types. Not toy breeds with an excuse for not going out in the rain!

The OP invited people to comment on what baffles them. If people engage with this they have no right to complain when their own behaviour is baffling to other posters.

Oh I’ve just thought of one, it doesn’t annoy me in fact I’m impressed by it:

On a recent transatlantic trip, I was sitting in the aisle seat both times. On neither flight (7 hours each way) did the people by the window/middle seat get up to use the toilet! I didn’t sleep and I would have had to stand up to let them out.

Who are these people with cast iron bladders?!

I was seriously impressed. They were in all cases young - under 30 for sure. I suspect that may have something to do with it 🤣

I am someone like this 🤣 my dh has a bladder the size of a pea and is constantly going to the toilet. I usually don't go until I'm bursting especially on public transport etc
Could easily hold it for a few hours

I'm not talking about the day before. I'm talking about the morning before. So like 7 or 8am the day before collection. A full 24hrs early. Even longer on recycling week because they don't come until 11am.
They are in all day and go on and put of their house several times in the day.

It’s a boring task that has to be done - best get it out of the way then you can forget about it. Why spend the rest of the day constantly thinking ‘mustn’t forget to put the bins out’. Black bin will involve emptying bins from each room and recycling will involve tearing up and packing tidily all the delivery boxes we’ve just shoved in the shed.

And the ‘why do retired people shop on a weekend’? My DH does this but he goes out every day, gets him out of the house and he hasn’t the patience to get a full shop in one go. It’s what he does whilst I’m ignoring all my hobbies, books and housework and sitting on MN!

Especially when there is a wet patch

Thankfully I have been spared that image in reality, though it now hangs sickeningly in my mind's eye!
