Animal cruelty - lack of support on threads

theyhavenovoice · 23/04/2026 00:31

so am posting here because I’ve tried on other threads ( keep getting moved). In light of the last few days and what we’re learning. Testing on animals/ Beagles in the UK. I’m feeling heartbroken and have been so unaware. Anyone else?

It might be worth including more details about what you mean. I haven’t seen anything.

Theresabatinmykitchen · 23/04/2026 00:51

I just can’t bear to read anything about animal cruelty and I admit I hide threads and and turn the tv over when those awful RSPCA adverts appear, I know it’s cowardly but the images haunt me and I find it really distressing, I try to help animals as much as I can in real life and volunteer for an animal charity, others may feel similar and maybe that’s why they don’t get traction because it’s just so awful?

PauliesWalnuts · 23/04/2026 00:56

I think a lack of traction is partly due to the fact that there are far, far worse things going on in the world at the moment. Plus people might not think the same as you - I don’t like animal cruelty for the sake of it but I’m not against it when life saving drugs or operating procedures are being tested.

PollyBell · 23/04/2026 00:58

It might help to say what you want to say and not talk in codes

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 23/04/2026 01:05

It’s absolutely cruel. Dogs forced to inhale pesticides, forced to ingest poisons repeatedly and without pain relief. Much of the testing is done to aid veterinary medicine, how messed up is that?!

Generally, etiquette would dictate that you should include the details of what it is you want to discuss.

Providing a link and expecting people to go away and read it is just rude.

Surely, if you care so much you have lots to say about it?

😱😱😱😱 I don't believe it is ever ever justified, EVER.

TheGoldenOwl · 23/04/2026 06:28

I'm so sad to see the AIBU poll at 50/50 when

"doses of chemicals are either force-fed through a tube directly into the stomach or injected" [to "see what happens" when the dog is poisoned. No pain relief is given.]

Assessing the results involves autopsy, so even if the animal survives being poisoned, they’ll be killed to get the result. puppies as young as 5 weeks old are being killed as well as adults subjected to years of testing. Beagles are chosen in particular because they are soft, docile and compliant. 💔

It's disgusting. That is before we even get to the swathe of animals being tortured to order for sickos on the internet. Why are humans so fucking awful.

january1244 · 23/04/2026 07:33

It’s disgusting, and also it doesn’t work. 92% of trials that pass animal testing fail in human trials. Because animals are different species to us.

There are alternatives, anti-vivisection organisations have come up with them over the decades, like organ on a chip and AI which outperform animal trials. But they have a higher cost and more training implications and so haven’t been widely adopted by drugs companies.

Theres no reason to test on animals - donate to the anti vivisection charities. I think maybe more public outcry and pressure might be able to change things

I'm exactly the same. I deal in real life with this everyday. I simply can't bear to even open threads when I know it will upset me greatly and I'm not able to actually physically do anything about it - which of course is different to the rescue work I actually do.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 23/04/2026 07:41

If you start a thread OP the onus is on you to provide context. I don't know what you are on about. Maybe that's why people didn't engage in other boards.

I’m the same. I do a lot of donating and supporting animal charities in real life but I come to Mumsnet for light hearted stuff so I hide anything about animal cruelty here. It doesn’t mean I don’t care about it - quite the opposite actually.

LastHotel · 23/04/2026 07:48

What are you talking about? What “last few days”? What are we “learning”? I read and watch and listen to the news every day and I don’t know what you mean.

I suspect it’s related to the testing on monkeys etc related to weight loss jabs. There’s been a lot of stuff in the news about it and many threads here about it.

LappingLouisa · 23/04/2026 08:09

I can’t even open that link OP because it will upset too much, but then I feel the same about intensive factory farming where we’ve created a system that prioritises 'cheap and fast' over animal welfare and health - just to produce low-quality meat that a lot of the time ends up in cheap UPF. What those poor animals go through just to end up in a wrapper on a supermarket shelf.

GentleSheep · 23/04/2026 08:12

I know which thread you mean OP - re weight loss injections. Animal experimentation is truly awful, I agree. Unfortunately some life-saving medicines have only come about through this practice but I don't condone it.

But there are alternatives now, more expensive and more training in personnel, but until there’s pressure I guess drugs companies will keep the status quo

Hard for people to support you when they have no clue what you’re talking about.

RedWineCupcakes · 23/04/2026 09:11

Guessing you have been reading that frothing Daily Mail article targeted at guilt tripping women using WLI.

All drugs are tested on animals, they have to be or they cannot be licensed.

Most people who work in the labs testing new pharmaceuticals are extremely caring and compassionate towards the animals that are used. They recognise that suffering can be a problem and do their utmost best to minimise it and treat animals with respect and dignity. But, as long as Regulatory Agencies insist on toxicity testing in order get products approved, the pharmaceutical industry has to comply.

There is nothing new, nothing has changed to make things worse. The industry is actively working to reduce the number of animal studies.

Non-animal testing methods can provide a complementary approach to traditional animal testing but they cannot replace it entirely.

ALL medications have been tested on animals. So if you feel that strongly about it, then don't use any drugs. Not even paracetamol.

AngryHerring · 23/04/2026 09:49

what is it that you are railing against exactly?
The only testing on animals in the UK is tightly regulated and while it is obviously awful for the individual animals, it doesn't happen for no reason.

But plopping an emotive, vague post like that? automatically makes you unreasonable IMO.

This is so upsetting. Who the fuck do we humans think we are.

That poor primate - they are really not that different to us.

Those images need to be plastered everywhere
