With the current situation in the Middle East not improving and jet fuel set to run out in 6 weeks, what do you think are the chances of your summer holidays proceeding?

I'm not thinking our holiday is likely to be cancelled. But holidays were cancelled in COVID and it wasn't the end of the word, so what will be will be.

Octavia64 · 18/04/2026 20:17

Lake District probably fine.

Zurich - hmm.

user1476613140 · 18/04/2026 20:18

I'm just doing a couple of beach day trips like most other summers so my plans aren't changing this year.

Fibrous · 18/04/2026 20:18

We have our first foreign holiday booked since 2019 so of course it’s going to get bloody cancelled. We have until mid day to cancel the hotel, hoping the situation is clearer by then.

Same here. Except it's been since 2014 for us (youngest has never been on a plane)

We had a holiday cancelled when Thomas Cook went bust, then another cancelled due to Covid so I'm not holding out much hope.

HotGazpacho · 18/04/2026 20:35

Family member has a significant event booked in Europe in September and I’m starting to wonder if even that will go ahead.

I have my first ever holiday abroad planned and I just know it’ll get cancelled.

We have flights booked to Austria in July. We're proceeding as if it will go ahead until we hear otherwise. Driving or train could be alternative options but pretty inconvenient.

Ugh that is bad luck

Ours got cancelled due to covid too. And we got our money straight back. That’s what will be the difference this time. Will people get their money back?

Flights wise, if the airline cancels they have to refund.

I am sort of ignorantly hoping that the airlines facing going bust will put enough pressure on governments that a solution is found.

I don’t have fixed summer holidays - just whenever I feel like a break. I prefer taking them outside of summer as it is cheaper and work is quieter during the holidays.

I want to do a UK break so nothing will be unchanged.

schmalex · 18/04/2026 20:51

I really doubt it'll be an issue - it's media hyperbole as usual. Jet fuel isn't 'set to run out in 6 weeks'. Somebody was quoted as saying it 'could' run out in 6 weeks, and it's been blown up out of all proportion.

FoxandDuck · 18/04/2026 20:54

We have accom booked in Europe for the end of August but not booked the flights yet. We can’t decide whether to book them yet or not. I don’t think the jet fuel running out in six weeks is scaremongering but I do think the message from airline companies that everyone should book flights now to avoid price rises is them trying to manipulate the situation. I would have thought the reason they are encouraging people to book now is that bookings have fallen off a cliff and so their income stream is plummeting.
We were also planning on having a European holiday in July but haven’t done anything about that yet. I contacted a couple of hotels recently as I wanted to clarify a couple of things about room configurations and they are being very attentive and, I feel, offering me deals that I wouldn’t usually expect to get at this time of year. We might switch to Wales instead!

ForgotWhatIDidYesterday · 18/04/2026 20:54

Well my summer plans are on hold anyway as my Mum has just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given between 3-6 months to live.

SpanThatWorld · 18/04/2026 20:55

We lost a holiday 2 years ago when my husband had a life changing head injury.

He then spent 4 months in hospital the following year.
We have a trip booked this year but honestly, there are so many things that can go wrong in life, I'm very phlegmatic about possibly not going on holiday.

RockyBirdy · 18/04/2026 20:56

We're planning a road trip around France, we love how much more value for money it is as a family of 5 as opposed to a resort holiday. However, if the cost of fuel etc keeps going up we will have to re-think our plans.

I'm bracing myself for the inevitable cost of living impact of fuel going up, so already wobbly about spending a few grand.

So it's not just potentially the flight costs that people are concerned with.

BePoisedPlumUser · 18/04/2026 20:58

My civilised late afternoon flight in June got changed this morning to a much earlier one which means I’ve now got a 9 hour wait at the connecting airport and have to be up and at the airport at the crack of dawn.

Goinggonegone · 18/04/2026 21:03

@ForgotWhatIDidYesterday I'm so very sorry. 💐

Dontlletmedownbruce · 18/04/2026 21:04

I'm kind of worried. We have lots of 50ths this year and between dh and I, we have 5 overseas weekend breaks plus holidays. This is absolutely not usual for us it's just this one year where everything fell together. I suspect if they get cancelled they won't ever happen. One group have never been away before, we booked something during covid that cancelled and never got around to rebooting until now. Personally I don't care about air travel and would be happy with something nearby but I'm going along with the majority.

jay55 · 18/04/2026 21:13

Am on holiday now, coming home tonight. I’m hopeful for some trips to Cornwall this summer to stay with family and think all should be well for that.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 18/04/2026 21:16

Simon Calder says holidays won't be cancelled. I choose to believe Sir Simon of Travel.

CorvusPurpureus · 18/04/2026 21:30

I’m more worried that I’m moving jobs from the ME to SE Asia start of August. Flight is now routed through Europe rather than the usual Doha/Qatar options, but if the planes run out of juice that’s going to…complicate things.

Another76543 · 18/04/2026 21:31

I haven’t given it too much thought. We do have flights booked, but I’ll deal with any issues/cancellations as they arise. We dealt with it during Covid and I’m sure we can deal with it again. There’s much worse things that could happen than a cancelled holiday to be honest. Whilst holidays are lovely, it’s not the end of the world if they get cancelled. People across the world have far bigger problems than dealing with missing a holiday.

Tunnocks34 · 18/04/2026 21:32

I am sailing not flying. Expecting fuel to be more expensive but not foreseeing a cancellation
