With the current situation in the Middle East not improving and jet fuel set to run out in 6 weeks, what do you think are the chances of your summer holidays proceeding?

We are off to Florida in 4 weeks and it hasn’t been cancelled yet!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/04/2026 10:43

We have a UK trip planned so think that’s likely to go ahead!

It does involve a lot of driving but I’m thinking the petrol isn’t going to all be gone by August.

I work in the industry and most airlines, including the one I work for, pre buys all their fuel to the end of the season. This 6 weeks is blown out of context and scare mongering

Well I'm ex-industry (long long time in it) and I seem to recall it's more complex than that.

Sure, an airline might effectively buy ahead as part of the hedging process, as in x million barrels/tonnes at $xxx unit price for delivery for the next y months, but that doesn't mean the vendor then goes out, buys all that fuel on day one and then locks away that physical quantity of fuel in tanks somewhere...

All that happens throughout the season is in effect the seller has to get the fuel off the open market as and when it's needed by the airline....if the open market goes low or nil stock the vendor and the airline have a problem.

TBF I think there were stories of one US airline (?Delta) had or has it's own refinery and there may be the odd airline that works as you describe and hold months worthd of their own fuel in tank farms somewhere but it hasn't been the norm at many places.

What's in the media is not all scaremongering.

DD is going to Disneyland Paris and going by train (relieved to have it already booked).

Otherwise a couple of weekends in the UK.

Unlikely to be affected

Holidayworry1 · 19/04/2026 11:04

@Userjal please tell us more.
So easy jet has the season covered but what happens if it's brought but where is it ?
Where is the fuel ie what good is having it paid for when it's stuck in the straight of houz ?

Holidayworry1 · 19/04/2026 11:08

@notimagain thanks x post there !
This is what I can't understand either like you said buying the fuel is one thing but where it's it.

What do you think of petrol and diesel shortages here ? Are the gov correct that we don't need to worry and we have a varied and diverse source of fuel ?

It’s called hedging.

They “buy” it as in, they have contracts for it to be delivered. The problem is there’s none to be delivered.

It’s possible to drive to most of Europe or go on the train with stop overs.

Oh, Petrol/diesel Uk I can't begin to guess, sorry.

Holidayworry1 · 19/04/2026 11:22

Yes I know ! .
I thought the other holidays people maybe able to give us more concrete information as to what is going on with supply.

Where is the supply coming from that is giving them such confidence . Why not just say if so

Yep, in the very early days of the current supply glitch there was quite a bit of talk in the MSM of how far ahead airline xxx was hedged or yyy was hedged...thereby maybe hinting it gave those airlines some sort of protection.

Not much if any mention that hedging is basically a mechanism for gambling on the markets and means little to nothing if the fuel is not there to be had..

Caspianberg · 19/04/2026 11:48

Possibly. We already had main holiday this year at the beginning with some winter sun as we hadn’t been away away for years.

But we are in central/ southern Europe, and had planned a quick trip back to see family in Uk. I haven’t booked flights yet. We could theoretically drive but it’s almost a 3 day drive which makes it tricky as I had only planned a week off to visit. We have electric car so lack of fuel wouldn’t be huge issue

We will just enjoy where we live mainly for summer though. It’s a hot summer destination so no need to travel for that.

zingally · 19/04/2026 11:48

We're off to Austria, but not until September.

No point worrying about it.

We had a fully booked and paid for holiday to Italy cancelled during Covid. It took a little while, but we got all our money back, apart from the cost of a pre-holiday airport hotel.

Femalefootyfan · 19/04/2026 11:57

We usually go away early September each year, just a week in Europe but as yet, we haven’t anything. We’re going to see how things pan out over the coming weeks before we start planning but hopefully we can go somewhere.

I feel sorry for anyone planning on booking something last minute. Prices are going to be sky high.
I hope it resolves soon, thanks Trump!!! We’re meant to be off to Turkey in August.

Just looked at tickets now, going to cost me over 1000e just for flights (though tbf that's with seat booking, fast track and priority), with Ryanair! And can't book until my manager confirms my time off.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 19/04/2026 14:24

Meant to be off to Spain at the end of July, 15th wedding anniversary and 2 DC. Been saving for it for 3 years, and booked it in early Jan. Been learning Spanish for the last 10 months. The children have been working so hard in their swimming lessons, to make the most of the pools and water park.

Really, really hope that it will go ahead. Was initially just worrying about the new airport passport delays, but now worrying about actually going.

All part of a package, and got insurance the day we booked, but it is something we have been looking forward to so much.

GoinSouth · 20/04/2026 21:04

Booked our AirBNB in Crete last year, going 4th September for my 60th. BNB paid for (non-refundable); more recently, flights (paid for), car rental (cancellable), the cat sitter (cancellable). So if flights are cancelled, should get a few things refunded easily enough.. feeling it's 50/50 at the moment. Looking forward to the trip but if it's cancelled so be it - will be looking for last minute ferries to somewhere!

Mumofyellows · 20/04/2026 21:09

Wales next week - that will be fine!
France in June and again in July should be ok.
Croatia in August is a bit of a worry as it’s further, and we are also hoping to book Sicily for September, holding off for now.

Oleoreoleo · 20/04/2026 21:09

Hoping the flights home will be cancelled and we’ll be forced to stay on holiday indefinitely.

I’m going to the US so I’m kind of hoping that doesn’t happen 😂😂

Cherrybomb00 · 20/04/2026 21:19

We’re meant to be going to Spain in July. Not worrying about it at this stage, I’m assuming I’m going unless I hear otherwise directly from Jet2.
I also had holidays cancelled due to Thomas Cook going bust and COVID. It really wasn’t a big deal, we were ATOL protected and refunded in full promptly.

Netcurtainnelly · 20/04/2026 21:36

not booked anything yet, waiting to see what happens re flights and holidays abroad.

holidaysoff · 20/04/2026 21:37

I think I’ve given up all hope today. The jet fuel shortage is starting to hit the press and apparently easyJet expect to be hardest hit. My flight is with easyJet!

Mine better be proceeding as I’m off glamping against my better judgment.

Pistachiomonster · 21/04/2026 12:08

We have a package holiday booked to Italy end of May and wanted to book another holiday later on in the year but holding off to see what happens. For our holiday in May we live quite a distance from all airports and have an early flight and are quite a distance from the airport we are flying from. We usually travel the day before and stay over in a hotel close to the airport so really hope our flight isn’t cancelled, gets moved to another airport even further away or the dates get changed which will mess with my annual leave dates.
