With the current situation in the Middle East not improving and jet fuel set to run out in 6 weeks, what do you think are the chances of your summer holidays proceeding?

Our big abroad travel holiday is in December (off to Japan) so not going to worry yet about that. However, I have flights France to visit my 94 year old gran in the summer as she is not in the best of health.

I don’t know the age of your kids but we have had great UK city breaks with ages 10 to 16. Some of the larger cities sell a pass to the whole city (or most of the attractions) which made it very affordable and manageable. It meant that you could go to an attractionand stay for as long/short as you like without thinking ‘this cost a fortune so you’d better like it’. One city threw in a really good lunch deal with the pass as well, which made it affordable for a whole family to eat out.

Have you a list of any good ones.

Was thinking London/ Edinburgh. They haven't been. But other places would be good for future trips as well. 8 and 12 year olds

Funny because...?

Not laughing at your post.

Just think you meant pragmatic.

But not laughing at you.

I’m planning alternative train routes just in case - very doable as we need to get to Milan, and we’re going for 2 weeks so it’s worth the extra travel time if necessary. I will have my usual summer hols come hell or high water!

Can someone more knowledgeable about these things explain, please? If, supposedly, there's '6 weeks worth of fuel left' and flights are getting cancelled left and right (as per media scaremongering), then why am I getting tons of newsletters from various airlines with offers for flights in June/July/August? 'Embrace the Mediterranean this July', 'Sip cocktails in Capri this August', etc?

Lots of sales, but nothing outrageous, usual discounts of 15-20% for some spring-summer flights.

Why are they doing this, if 'fuel is about to run out'?

I have two holidays booked, one week at the end of May and a 6-week break starting in August. Not overly worried. Slightly, maybe. I flew all over and had great holidays during Covid, don't see this as much different, tbh. More scaremongering than anything, imo.

Well, if it's cancelled, then what can you do? I'll deal with it when it happens. Hopefully, it won't.

Europe/Uk there's fuel ATM and should be for at least, maybe, 6 weeks...estimates vary.

Currently flights aren't being cancelled due fuel shortages in the Uk/Europe and the airlines hope the fuel situation will improve PDQ, so they're going to keep selling pretty much as normal, right up to the point where cancellations/consolidations become inevitable, if that happens.

Where this ends up depends on how quickly the Straits.of Hormuz blocade gets lifted.

Yes, I’d imagine it’s a bit like a business going into receivership, just carrying on regardless right up until they slap a sign on the door saying “Closed for Good”.

We're going to a campsite about 20 minutes away. So should be business as usual.

You clearly aren't aware of the moods or personality types based on the humours - phlegmatic, choleric, sanguine etc. If you're not familiar with a word, it helps to look it up rather than to assume that the poster has made a mistake. The answer is literally at one's fingertips.

Booked to take DS to Croatia for a few days after GCSEs, am keeping everything crossed 🤞

Well my summer plans are on hold anyway as my Mum has just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given between 3-6 months to live.

That’s devastating news for you all, I’m so very sorry for you.

News like that puts all this debacle into perspective doesn’t it..

garlictwist · 18/04/2026 23:08

I’m not thinking about it. It’s not in my control. It will be what it will be. But I do expect it will be fine.

Bassetyate · 18/04/2026 23:10

We have a week in June. I’m not thinking about it at all, what will be will be.

AuntChippy · 18/04/2026 23:25

We have two lots of long haul flights booked for July and October. I’d be gutted if the July one is affected as it’s for us, our kids and their partners. The October flights are for a wedding. I’d be delighted if we had to cancel, tbh.

No. I meant phlegmatic.

It means unemotional and stolid. Accepting of what is coming my way.

FurForksSake · 18/04/2026 23:32

We are going to wales, always were. I’m worried it is going to be super busy! We were considering popping out to the family apartment in Marbella, that’s super flexible but probably won’t go this year.

FurForksSake · 18/04/2026 23:32

miniaturepixieonacid · 18/04/2026 23:53

I just bought a house so my days of affording holidays are gone. I am supposed to be flying on a Year 8 trip abroad in June. They're a challenging year group. I can't say I'd be heartbroken not to go! But I hope for most people's sakes that there are no issues.

hattie43 · 19/04/2026 07:01

I think prebooked holidays may be ok but I’m not booking anything else until this war is over

bumblingbovine49 · 19/04/2026 07:17

I have just got back from a 2 week holiday in Malaysia

We did have some flights via Dubai cancelled for some of us but we sorted it out. My friends even spent 2 weeks of their month long holiday actually in Dubai. They flew there about 3 weeks weeks after the war started. Apparently it was lovely, quiet and cheap ( dont ask me I would not have gone but they chose to and it actually worked out fine for them)

As to flight cancellation of internal flights within Malaysia, that happened to some flights but luckily not to ours

Asian airlines are definitely already being affected by the fuel issue but it wasn't stopping most flights, not sure about in Europe and hopefully hhe fuel issue may resolve before the summer

Ive just booked a trip to Japan for this time next year, so I am obviously hoping things improve

Wingingit73 · 19/04/2026 07:17

Ill wait and see what the travel company says.
I feel very sorry for civilians suffering because Trump is trigger happy.

keepswimming38 · 19/04/2026 07:22

I don’t think I would book flights now knowing it’s possibly going to be cancelled as why would an airline have any reason to compensate you? However our flights were booked in January so the airline does have some responsibility.

atiaofthejulii · 19/04/2026 07:23

My DS is getting married in Spain in June so I'm hoping that we'll all be able to get there! I honestly wouldn't mind driving down if we have to though.

BennyHenny · 19/04/2026 07:27

Another76543 · 18/04/2026 21:31

I haven’t given it too much thought. We do have flights booked, but I’ll deal with any issues/cancellations as they arise. We dealt with it during Covid and I’m sure we can deal with it again. There’s much worse things that could happen than a cancelled holiday to be honest. Whilst holidays are lovely, it’s not the end of the world if they get cancelled. People across the world have far bigger problems than dealing with missing a holiday.

This is my take on it too, we’ll do something else if our overseas holiday is cancelled. But I have faith it won’t get to that stage.
