If you could choose one artwork to own, what would it be?

With the following caveat, you must select one that you love, rather than for its worth etc.

At the moment, I would choose “Sketch of a Seated Cat” by Gwen John. ❤️

The fairy fella’s master stroke.
By Richard Dadd.

savvy7 · 11/04/2026 07:54

Can't believe this isn't taken. I'll have Botticelli's Birth of Venus thanks

ObligateAerobe · 11/04/2026 07:56

Some interesting choices so far. I'm pretty predictable and classic. My choice is, "The Molo, Venice, from the Bacino di San Marco", by Canaletto.

Can't go wrong with a Canaletto, tbh.

I considered it - but I'd definitely need to actually have it in my house, and I just don't have the space.😂

Anything by Paula Rego but perhaps particularly Flying Children from her Peter Pan series.

I also really wanted and saved up for this wonderful print by Fiona Watson which makes me smile every morning: A Hundred Birds In A Competition Of Humourous Poetry

Thank you ! 🫠 Bufandas (scarves) I had recently been getting long stored pictures / posters framed in a good quality gallery and they had this hanging. I had to go back and buy it It was visceral, sorry TMI 🤩
BUT I know very little = nothing = about the artist. When I made the final payment and it was installed, I asked for details. Lots of sweet smiles and assurance (as is the way) but zero zippity zip. I believe a Spanish artist but nothing has come up online. I will remind the gallery on Monday as I am intrigued. I want to know 🧐

Albrecht Durer a great piece of turf just so relaxing but fantastic too also Vermeer's milkmaid
Sorry didn't mean to quote

Emin’s bed. I’ve seen it twice now in person and both times it evoked something new and felt different.

I love her.

FeltCarrot · 11/04/2026 08:12

For me it would be anything by Kawase Hasui.

Alone in the World by Josef Israels. Makes me well up every time I see it.

We get a dream house (and / or garden) for this, right?

ArtAngel · 11/04/2026 08:39

It will take me a while to decide between a Rothko, a Hepworth, maybe an Ann Ancher

I have a poster of that up on the wall opposite the end of my bed, so I see it every day (and sing the Queen song to myself.) There's a Dadd exhibicominh up later this year.

I would definitely choose sculpture, probably bronze, because the advantage of actually owning something would be the ability to touch it all over, and paintings are mostly just for looking at.

I've just done a bit of window shopping on google, and I think that the most satisfying object to possess and feel would be either a Barbara Hepworth or the wolf in Rome with Romulus and Remus suckling.

I studied Picasso's Guernuca for AS level Spanish, and I made a trip to Madrid to see it in the Reina Sofia. I had a weird physical reaction to it, like I've not had with any other artwork. I think it's an amazing piece, but I absolutely wouldn't want to live with it!

That's so movingly sad. It reminds me of Van Gogh's 'At Eternity's Gate' (I think that's the title, which shows an old man with his head in his hands in absolute despair.

Beautiful paintings with enormous emotional power.

Now that one terrifies me! You can tell it was painted by a very sick man - I think he was in Bedlam Hospital at the time after killing his father.

I used to have a recurring nightmare as a child with tiny figures, all very unnaturally distinct and in focus, just like the ones in this painting.

Anything by klimt 😊

The Beguiling of Merlin by Edward Burne Jones. I've got nowhere to put it because it's huge and my house isn't, but it's one of my favourite paintings. I saw it 'on tour' about 30 years ago and fell in love with it. It lives at the Lady Lever gallery in Liverpool which I'd like to visit but it's awkward to get to from where I am (I don't drive).

Verity sculpture (Damien Hurst) if that’s not taken please. Such a powerful piece of art. The people of Ilfracombe might be a bit sad to see her go though!

That one would definitely be on my shortlist. There was a picture of it in a 1970s Puffin Annual that I had, in a piece about dreams, and I used to gaze at it for hours.

Years later when a friend played me Queen II I was thrilled to recognise all the people from the painting popping up in the song of the same name 😃

I know you said one piece, but I really couldn't choose between my 2 favourite pieces! First is The Lady of Shalott - John William Waterhouse. The second Brain Salad Surgery Works Nr 217 - H R Giger.

I was going to pick The Lady of Shalott (reminds me of my DD) but as you snapped it up I'll go for Miranda. So Beautiful.

distinctpossibility · 11/04/2026 09:41

Mine would be Rousseau's Tiger in a Tropical Storm. I just love looking at it. It is like it scratches a part of my brain that only Clean Bandit's song Rather Be can scratch in a similar way. It's a bit out of my price and size range.

Perfection. I would never tire of looking at this.

Beautiful isn’t it? Have a look at some of his other paintings, they’re always moon or lamp lit. So atmospheric
