With the following caveat, you must select one that you love, rather than for its worth etc.

At the moment, I would choose “Sketch of a Seated Cat” by Gwen John. ❤️

Stanley Spencer, at the Sandham Memorial Chapel. I'd obviously need the whole chapel to support the paintings.

Actually, if I could have this, I'd probably upgrade and go for the Sistine Chapel so that I could scream at it.

Whistlejacket by Stubbs. It’s been a favourite since I was small and used to go and see it at Kenwood. It’s now in the National Gallery. It is ENORMOUS!

Or a small Rembrandt sketch of a lion. I love that.

Frederic William Burton’s Meeting on the Turret Stairs. I have a large copy of it at the top of my stairs so I see it every day.

Fascinating tale and the watercolour is incredible. I want to see the real thing. I just stop and stare at the details. The blue is so vivid and the passion it evokes, I just love it.

Thank you for introducing me to this, I keep going back to it. The “unspoken” emotion just screams out.

For me, it’s

I visited it last weekend, the way the use of light makes her nightdress shine making her really stand out, her poise just adds to the tragic tale of her short life. The whole scene is captivating. So much so I’m returning to the National Gallery today as i need to see it again. (whilst hoping the rest of the public don’t come in to disturb my moment!).

Then I’m off to explore new paintings to further see what i like, art is a new area for me.

Pollock no 1. It makes me cry.

Shows how subjective art is. I think Pollock is dreadful

Ozzy the bull from the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Bathers at Asnieres. Seurat.

Well as it’s in the National Gallery, in a sense you already own it

I'd have "The Bride", a carved bust by Raffaele Monti - here is a picture of a cast made from it, in the Fitzwilliam Museum. I'm always astounded how it is possible to carve solid stone to appear transparent! The Fitzwilliam Museum - The Bride: C.7-1969

You beat me to it, BestZebbie Grin I find it both jaw dropping and exquisite in equal measure

Failing that I'd settle for this: https://kushfineart.com/artworks/categories/8/9434-diary-of-discoveries-24-x-42-inches/

Not quite as high-brow as.many choices,, but the Keith Haring Heart always makes me smile and takes me back to my year abroad in Italy in the late 90s. I love simplicity and colours, so anything by Kandinsky or Klimt would also be wonderful. I do appreciate art of all genres, but I think contemporary is more my style.

LoserWinner · 11/04/2026 11:03

Bernini’s ‘David’, which is in the Borghese gallery in Rome. But I’d also need a couple of million pounds to house it properly.

The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. So much detail, I would never get bored of it.

InterestedDad37 · 11/04/2026 11:11

Guernica: Picasso (1937)
I'd need a bigger house. It's 25ft 6 by 11ft 5.
I've seen it in Madrid. It's phenomenal!

Vermeer’s View of Delft or Monet’s The Magpie. Both had a real emotional impact on me when I saw them in real life.
Id be happy with a Gwen John too.

CandyEnclosingInvisible · 11/04/2026 11:16

I would want a Barbara Hepworth sculpture but it would take me a while to decide which specific one. It would have to be one of the ones that use wires or strings in this characteristic way but there are dozens that would make me veryvery happy. Among my favourites is the lower right one from this collage which is called Orpheus (Maquette 2) made in 1956 but I'd be ok with one of the others if the Tate didn't want to give it to me.

Yes, it's one of the most viscerally impactful pieces of art I've ever seen 'in the flesh'

It'll be at the Royal Academy from July.

Some interesting choices so far. I'm pretty predictable and classic. My choice is, "The Molo, Venice, from the Bacino di San Marco", by Canaletto.
www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-5701805

Can't go wrong with a Canaletto, tbh.

Agreed, any Canaletto of Venice, so much to look at. I have the book 1000 paintngs to see before you die. Everytime I open it I find something new and am astounded by the skills of painters like the Dutch masters.
