With the following caveat, you must select one that you love, rather than for its worth etc.

At the moment, I would choose “Sketch of a Seated Cat” by Gwen John. ❤️

Bathers at Asnieres. Seurat.

If you like Seurat and can get to London, there is a wonderful exhibition on at the Courtauld just now; Seurat and the Sea.
I went a few weeks ago and thought I’d died and gone to heaven!

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose

John Singer Sargent

I was scrolling through the thread looking for this one. I remember being transfixed by it as a teenager in the Tate, mainly the light from the lanterns.

I now have a print of it on my wall which I bought when my two daughters were that age and they looked so much like them.

Dozer · 11/04/2026 06:18

The Goldfish by Klimt (ebullient women and bums!) or Blue Hills or Light Coming on the Plains by O’Keeffe

Salvator Mundi

Oh wow me too.
I am just fascinated by it.

I agree - seeing it for real took my breath away. The light in the lanterns absolutely seems to glow.

Dufy La Baie des Anges

Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. I love his paintings and could stare at them for hours.

Flaming June by Leighton.

I saw it in London a couple of years ago. Up close the dress is stunning, and I love the way the sun sparkles on the sea in the distance.

I wish I was her, napping on my balcony somewhere in Italy...

JeremiaBoogle · 11/04/2026 06:35

Instantly thought of "The Meeting on the Turret Stairs". But seeing it's already claimed by @MeOldBamboo I'll settle for The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife. (Sadly not letting me attach.)

Both in the same gallery, so maybe we can arrange a timeshare? 😃

We read The Family from One End Street when I was at school and it references this painting. I’d always wondered what it looked like and when I came upon it, it stopped me in my tracks.

Anything by Pete McKee, he was in my class at school & I love his paintings as a lot of them are of the area I live & the music I love.

Nice!!

Wow. I haven’t seen that one before, it’s so pretty.

I love Madam X, which is also my John Singer Sargent. I find its lore interesting too.

I love that one too. My favourite is the portrait of the handsome French gynaecologist(!) - such an intense face, but it wouldn't look right on my wall.

I read The Family from One End Street in primary school, and was blown away when I saw Carnation, Lily…. On a school trip to the Tate Gallery in secondary school.

Death of Ophelia by Sir John Everett Millais- absolute gothic masterpiece!!!

Me too. I think there are nicer paintings but this has resonance for me, along with an interest in and love for the Pre-Raphaelites.

Yes, I saw it too, at the National Portrait Gallery I think, and you're right about the lanterns. It's like fluorescent paint way before it was invented. Incredible x

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/04/2026 06:56

Mid 70s, long before it was all over notebooks, t shirts and coffee mugs, my Dad took me to see Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa, somewhere in London. I was possibly 4. As the third of 4 children, time alone with a parent was pretty rare. I believe there are only 10 or so prints that are in public collections. So it was a memorable trip for that reason, but I do love the image, so I’d have an original print.

MeAndMyGhost · 11/04/2026 07:02

The cafe scene (don't know the real name) by Beryl Cook.

I'd love to own an original Beryl Cook!

JulietteHasAGun · 11/04/2026 07:03

I’d love a Yoshitomo Nara painting, maybe this one

MyThreeWords · 11/04/2026 07:10

I would definitely choose sculpture, probably bronze, because the advantage of actually owning something would be the ability to touch it all over, and paintings are mostly just for looking at.

I've just done a bit of window shopping on google, and I think that the most satisfying object to possess and feel would be either a Barbara Hepworth or the wolf in Rome with Romulus and Remus suckling.

whirlyhead · 11/04/2026 07:12

if I could, I’d have Picasso’s Guernica on the wall though I’d need to buy a castle to fit it in! I know it’s not at all restful, but it’s very powerful and kind of sums up the world at the moment.

I have several reproductions of Hilma af klint’s artworks on my walls from her Ten Largest series. She is amazing! There’s an article about her in the guardian this week.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 11/04/2026 07:16

The Roses of Heliogabulus by Lawrence Alma Tadema. Lush...

JulietteHasAGun · 11/04/2026 07:20

And this is another painting which I would have loved, I did have the opportunity to buy it last year for about 5k but it was in America and the cost of it and the shipping put me off. I love the story behind it as well as the picture. DH would have killed me if I’d bought it, he’d hate the picture as well! But it would have been a good investment (I think). I regret not buying it.

its an original John Wilson painting, he’s a well known artist in America….not so much here. The dogs in the painting belonged to Peter Gimbel of the Gimbel department store dynasty. Peter was actually a film maker and made a great shark documentary, Blue Water White Death, which Spielberg credited as partly inspiring Jaws. The dogs appear fleetingly in the documentary.

The Snail by Henri Matisse. If I move some furniture and relocate a window I can just about fit it in. I also have always loved Death of Ophelia, just beautiful.

After lunch by Patrick Caulfield. Although there are some other great suggestions on this thread (you can definitely add me to the list of people fascinated by The Bride)

Followthattaxi · 11/04/2026 07:46

Rembrandt's Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of Jerusalem (and I'm generally not a fan of Rembrandt).

I volunteered at an English Heritage place that borrowed this for an exhibition from the Rijksmuseum and was smitten.

It doesn't look like much on the Internet but in real life it glows. You can see the emotion being experienced by Jeremiah.

I used to joke that if it disappeared people should send police round to my house first. I adore that painting.
