If you could choose one artwork to own, what would it be?

With the following caveat, you must select one that you love, rather than for its worth etc.

At the moment, I would choose “Sketch of a Seated Cat” by Gwen John. ❤️

I'd have a Hepworth, probably Oval Sculpture no 2. Or maybe the big one off the side of the John Lewis on Oxford Street. I'm really drawn to sculpture, probably why I'm so indecisive about putting up pictures.

The Lady and the Unicorn

Louise Bourgeois’ Femme-Maison or Vanessa Bell’s Studland Beach. Oh, or Paula Rego’s Angel. Or Mary Swanzy’s In the Window. Impossible!

I fell in love with Fabian Perez Dancer In Red and White and spent ages trying to source it. It is now hanging above my bed since I shipped it in from the US about 10 years ago. I think it is beautiful.
(I hope the image attaches)

A small statue from 13th century Indonesia, called Simian Mother and Child. It's in the Art Institute of Chicago, but currently not on display.

I purchased my first and very own piece of art this year, for my birthday, and I love it, it's such a pleasure to own a treasure.
Obviously not in the same league as a Gwen Owen ! If if could chose anything, it would be a Bonnard. Maybe The White Cat 😻 or Flowers on a Mantelpiece.

I love Bonnard too.

You are the first person I have met who loves that painter! 🙃

Surpris! (Tiger in a tropical storm) by Henri Rousseau - it's the most vibrant painting I have ever seen in real life and it delights and exhilarates me every time I see it (it's the highlight of my every visit to the National Gallery).

Michelangelo's 'Pieta'

Me too, that would be mine.

I shed a tear when I see it - it is so powerful and moving.

For dh it is mother's love, but for me, it is the suffering of humanity.

Me too!

I must admit, I was thinking if I had to choose, I would choose one of the moonlight Pether paintings, but I don't know which one. But the Russeau is a really good choice and probably a better one than mine! I don't know, probably Pether is at the front of my mind because I just saw one recently - Moonlight Scene by Sebastian Pether.

I'd have "The Bride", a carved bust by Raffaele Monti - here is a picture of a cast made from it, in the Fitzwilliam Museum. I'm always astounded how it is possible to carve solid stone to appear transparent! The Fitzwilliam Museum - The Bride: C.7-1969

Amazing !

Paintings - too many to choose one.
I love John William Waterhouse, especially The Mermaid, had a poster of it in my first student digs.
Night With Her Train of Stars. or Midsummer Eve - both Edward Robert Hughes.
Does anyone know the painter of the attached, please ? I screenshotted it ages ago and have no other info.
Reminds me so much of the street where I grew up.

Also Caravaggio’s The Entombment of Christ. Saw the original in the art gallery of the Vatican - mesmerising, I must have spent half an hour staring at it before DH practically dragged me away encouraged me to move on.
Luckily it was a quiet morning …

Winged victory. Not sure it’d fit in my living room though.

Frederic William Burton’s Meeting on the Turret Stairs. I have a large copy of it at the top of my stairs so I see it every day.

Fascinating tale and the watercolour is incredible. I want to see the real thing. I just stop and stare at the details. The blue is so vivid and the passion it evokes, I just love it.

Hellelil and Hildebrand, the Meeting on the Turret Stairs by Frederic William Burton

On display for 2 hours each week.

Michelangelo’s David absolutely blew me away the first time I saw him, one of the most impressive things I’ve seen in real life (and tbf I’ve seen a lot). He would look absolutely marvellous in my garden too.

Quella · 11/04/2026 04:37

David Hockney - Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Percy. The story behind it is great as well! https://artuk.org/discover/stories/farah-nayeri-on-david-hockneys-mr-and-mrs-clark-and-percy

Ruthietuthie · 11/04/2026 04:50

I would like Da Vinci's "Lady with an Ermine," please.
I will also have Jullian Russell Story's "The Black Prince at Crécy." It is gigantic, so I might also have to move house.

CoffeeCantata · 11/04/2026 05:27

A study of clouds by John Constable in the Ashmolean Museum. Small and very beautiful, calm and sublime. It would look lovely in my living room!

If the question was 'What's your favourite painting?" (which IS a different question), I'd say Rembrandt's The Night Watch in the Rijksmuseum.

Van Gigh’s Roses or/ John Martin’s Plains of Heaven or/ Klimt’s Avenue in Schlob Kamner Park

very difficult to choose!!!!

A Rothko. I haven't decided which one.
One of the orange/red ones

But I have to say, I love the pp's artwork of the silk with the scarf hanging over it! Who is the artist, please?

Thank you ! 🫠 Bufandas (scarves) I had recently been getting long stored pictures / posters framed in a good quality gallery and they had this hanging. I had to go back and buy it It was visceral, sorry TMI 🤩
BUT I know very little = nothing = about the artist. When I made the final payment and it was installed, I asked for details. Lots of sweet smiles and assurance (as is the way) but zero zippity zip. I believe a Spanish artist but nothing has come up online. I will remind the gallery on Monday as I am intrigued. I want to know 🧐

RumNotRun · 11/04/2026 05:56

I'd have Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. I have a large canvas print of it and it makes me feel so peaceful every time I look at it.

A Moonlit Lane by Atkinson Grimshaw

Perfection. I would never tire of looking at this.
