to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

I own dogs and I don’t even wanna see them out and about. They should be banned from anywhere that serves food end of. They shouldn’t be allowed in shops either unless it’s a service dog. Dog are everywhere what happened to leaving them at home?

I do not for one second believe you own dogs.

YANBU. But there are a lot of people who think their animal is equivalent to human beings and will start going on about badly behaved children and how everyone loves their little fur baby.

We’ve had dragged, fur babies, John Lewis, stinks … right on track for shitty bums on page 9.

Do you make your kids sit on the floor in cafes?

A lot of dog owners round here don’t make their dogs sit on the floor in cafes, even when there’s a published “paws on floor” policy.

Staff never challenge them, which is the most frustrating part. (And it’s always, always small, yappy, badly-trained dogs. Which is unsurprising, as the owners seem to think they’re exempt from rules.)

Don't drag the poor bugger round Dorothy Perkins

Or into John Lewis to 'try a coat on' as I disbelievingly read the other day on here.

If John Lewis allows dogs and sells dogs' coats then what's wrong with any of this?

Dog's aren't allowed in John Lewis cafes, Waitrose or Waitrose cafes to answer the original post.

You’re absolutely right! We’ve even had someone complaining about dogs in Dorothy Perkins - which closed its last high street shop in 2021!

All we need now is that strange poster who is adamant that all dogs should be let free to live their lives in the woods….as nature intended 🤣🤣

Jackiepumpkinhead · 10/04/2026 16:38

This is so boring, what is the point of these posts? I could do a daily post asking why there aren’t more child free places, but that would be ridiculous. Seems to just be an opportunity for dog haters to moan.

Businesses will make the decision if dogs are allowed into their cafe, pub etc. It must be beneficial to their businesses or they wouldn’t do it. There’s still plenty of places that don’t allow dogs, and that’s fine. Serious dog allergies are very rare, and you can’t ban guide dogs, thank goodness.

Haha, I did not spot that. 😆

I am waiting for the poster who is on a one woman mission to get dogs banned from all cafes. She reckons she has been 100% successful so far (2 cafes).
Oh, and the one who says "Keir Starmer needs to do something about dogs".
Also the one who insists dogs are man made and not actually animals.

We’ve not had the poster who said she’s sick of dog owners pushing their dogs into her face for a kiss yet either.🤣

Runners and picnics.

PottingBench · 10/04/2026 16:42

Taunton is a market town in the middle of dog friendly country.

You can't take dogs in the shopping centres there. Nor Miles Cafe the lovely local cafe or either of the two Wetherspoons pubs. The main town park allows dogs but only on leads and no dogs at all in the large play areas.

People who say there is nowhere you can go where dogs aren't allowed are lying.

Gloriia · 10/04/2026 16:42

Responsible dog owners walk their dogs, tuck them up at home to chill then pop to the shops without them.

Dogs don't like crowded areas, they often aren't keen on other dogs either so get a few in a cafe and there are often lunges and barking. Not nice for other customers.

They should not be on seats but it isn't nice for them to on the floor where people stand on them or trip over them either.

If you have your dog with you get a takeway coffee. If you want to sit and chat leave the poor thing at home.

Well to the successful banning bit locally. Not the rest.

Completely agree and I have two dogs myself
I don't feel the need to take my dogs everywhere I go ,I quite like a break from their yapping ,so I definitely don't want to be surrounded by other people's dogs when I'm out ..
A side from that a close friend of mine was bitten on the hand by a dog as she was walking past it in a cafe ..it was sat on the owners lap and just lunged at my friend..quite a bit of blood ..the dog owners just left while she was trying to stop the blood
24 hours later the bite had swelled up with infection and my friend had to have an operation and have a general anaesthetic to clean the wound out ..
Not good ..
My own experience of dogs in cafes ,stopped after a dog shit all over the floor next to the cakes display..dog was ill with diarrhoea and it was a river of shit under chairs and utterly vile .
From that moment on ,I have never gone in any food establishment that lets dogs in ..I simply chose somewhere dog free
So if enough of us choose dog free for places ,they might get the message

That’s awful and then some
dog owners have the nerve to roll their eyes when I give their dogs a wide berth in enclosed spaces.

It’s an accident waiting to happen. Noisy sometimes hot crowded places full of strangers. Not surprised dogs just snap sometimes.

I live on the 4th floor. I was taking my bin bags out so took the lift. A couple of floors down a man with a dog that has previously lunged at me and other residents tried to enter.

I resented getting out to take the stairs as o was unwell, but there was no way I was going to be traveling in the lift with that dog. Had he been a more considerate owner he’d have waiting for the lift go down knowing what his dogs like, then called it up again. Or used the darn stairs!

I work for a popular coffee shop and we have now banned dogs from our store.

At first it wasn’t too bad but it became too much bother. If you do take take your dogs into cafes please don’t let them sit on the furniture or piss up it. Also don’t feed them from the crockery and if your dog starts barking at other dogs, take it outside ffs.

Also had an attempt at 'waitresses hands'.

Waiting now for 'dander on clothes I'm buying'.

I wish they would. I don't want dog hairs in my food.

Have you ever had dog hair in your food?
That’s hilarious

MandingoAteMyBaby · 10/04/2026 16:49

In Switzerland shops / cafes etc provide these handy hooks to clip the leash to while the owner goes inside and their sentient plaything remains safely outside. Let’s have this, away from the door so you can enter and leave without being bothered.

Next to the ashtray so all the antisocial shit stays out of the indoor space.

to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?
