to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

I was on holiday last week and there were dogs absolutely EVERYWHERE - cafes, indoor shopping centre, beauty spots.
Why on earth ( apart from assistance dogs) do you need to take a dog to a shopping centre?
Fed up of dogs sniffing around my food and barking at each other or fighting.

It's become ridiculous. I don't bring my cat out with me.

Because other people were on holiday and had their dog with them. You can't leave dogs alone in holiday accommodation.

This will be me in a few weeks. Holiday with my mum and her very well behaved dog. We will be going in places where he is allowed.

MandingoAteMyBaby · 10/04/2026 15:55

Time to ban them everywhere except private land to be honest. Public spaces should be dog-free.

Nando’s, pizza express, Prezzo, cote, zizzi, most national trust cafes, wetherspoons, McDonalds, GBK, five guys, Wagamama, miller and carter, harvester. I mean you are looking at 10s of thousands of outlets just across these

They are all chain restaurants. You can't really go in those for just a coffee and cake and have a nice cafe atmosphere. Having said that I always plump for Wetherspoons in town. It's my only choice though, even though there are dozens of proper cafes. They all accept dogs.

Well I went for chains because if I say well Amalia’s on my high street doesn’t allow dogs that doesn’t exactly prove the point that there are loads of options. So I have gone to give you the volume of places.

LighthouseLola · 10/04/2026 15:57

It’s now my list to only book haven spoons sites when we go caravaning

A lot of Wetherspoons are pretty good to be fair. But not a cafe atmosphere which is what I'm looking for when I'm out and about - also they're almost always in town centres. Still. Beggars can't be choosers. It's usually all there is without dogs.

MN must be the only social media in existence where a certain group of posters are unable to google.

Just take 2 minutes before you go somewhere to do an online search of places that don’t allow dogs. It’s really not hard! And there are plenty of them.

Dogs don't bother me but to be fair this will vary immensely by areas. Where I am every pub and business permits dogs. But I am in the country and this has always been the case in rural areas - I think people object to it more in towns.

Why do these threads only appear in the spring/summer/when the weather gets warmer?

Because when it's rained for weeks, it's 3 degrees and it's utterly miserable outside where are you? I'd take a guess not in the cafes? If you speak to most cafe owners they'll tell you that during the winter it's the dog walkers that keep them going because we don't really have a choice but to be outside in it so we might as well get a hot drink on the walk somewhere to make it a bit more bearable.

On a similar note, there ARE dog free cafes near us and one by one they're closing down, when you ask them why it's always the same story, lack of footfall, can't attract customers. So why aren't they being utilised if there's such a demand for them?

This is a very good point. We patronise these cafes throughout the year - even in the worst weather and it's mostly other dog owners/walkers in there keeping them open.

I wish but I just don't see it happening because dogs are absolutely everywhere and it is a financially smart decision for a lot of businesses.

It just means I avoid the vast majority of parks, shops and and cafes these days because my son is scared of dogs.

Listlostlast · 10/04/2026 16:00

I agree, it pisses me off people dragging their dogs here there and everywhere. I went to a shopping centre (a small one admittedly!) then to a cafe the other day and there were so many dogs! Some weren’t causing any issues of course but there were plenty that were barking and whining and getting in the way of people passing by etc etc. The worst of it was a fuck off big mastiff type that wasn’t on a lead, paying absolutely no attention to his owner but an awful lot of attention to my 4yo and 1yo. Now he didn’t attack them or anything but I did feel very on edge, and there’s little I or anyone else could’ve done if it did go for them, even to play could cause damage with the size of it. Thats before you get into the fact many dogs are poorly socialised and find busy places very upsetting, which seems terribly unfair! I say all this as a dog lover, with a dog myself 😂
I accept though that unfortunately I must be in the minority as clearly it makes businesses more money to allow them… and in this day and age I can see why they’d want to fully maximise their profits!

LighthouseLola · 10/04/2026 16:01

So I have gone to give you the volume of places

Cafes are what I look for. And the ones in my town are all dog friendly.
I'd know if there was a dog free cafe, I've tried them all.

There is actually a dog free cafe/garden centre/kids adventure park fairly close to where I live and we occasionally go there. Unfortunately there's an £8 pp admission fee so that's the downside. Costs us £24 to have a dog free afternoon. We go when I'm feeling flush.

AgnesMcDoo · 10/04/2026 16:02

I’d vote for that.

Cafes are private land.

I wouldn’t bother @Credittocress , I’ve even seen posters give dozens of examples of dog free cafes etc in particular locations, but there’s always a reason why none of them are suitable. Most people who don’t want be around dogs are simply too bone idle to make any sort of effort to find places.

And hello @vodkaredbullgirl and @YeOldeGreyhound ! Are you getting the same sense of Deja vu as me? 🤣🤣

I think its up to private businesses who they do and don't let in their premises. As long as it's clear dogs are allowed, then just go somewhere that doesn't let them in! In my small down, we have 4 or 5 cafes/coffee shops. Only 1 is dog friendly.

Dogs were here in public spaces thousands of years before you were born and they'll be here in public spaces when you're long gone.
