to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

I work for a popular coffee shop and we have now banned dogs from our store.

At first it wasn’t too bad but it became too much bother. If you do take take your dogs into cafes please don’t let them sit on the furniture or piss up it. Also don’t feed them from the crockery and if your dog starts barking at other dogs, take it outside ffs.

Ooh share the name for everyone who believes there’re no dog free places! It’d be good to start a comprehensive list.

I hope more coffee shops follow suit and in fact everywhere that serves food should have a sign stating if they accept dogs or not.

So dog owners don’t have to ask if they are allowed or not and those who don’t want dogs there can swerve the dog friendly ones. simple! I think that’s fair and a win for everyone!

I have recently found what seems to be the one coffee shop in my town that doesn’t allow dogs. It’s my new favourite cafe lol

ffsnewusername · 10/04/2026 16:53

@OnleemoiIt’s a Costa. A lot of stores allow dogs but it’s down to management.

Our staff had a vote and decided not to allow them in anymore. We already have to clean up shit and piss from the public, we didn’t fancy cleaning it up after dogs too! Which happened a few times, awful.

We still get a lot of pushback from dog owners but we’re an incredibly busy cafe and I don’t think it would be safe for dogs. I say that as a dog owner myself

JulietteHasAGun · 10/04/2026 16:53

Bloody hell, we had a 1000 post thread on this only last week. Are you the same poster OP….stirring it up again?

ultimately it’s up to the cafe owner. If you don’t like it then jog on. I’m sure many business owners will feel turning away dog owning customers would be worse than the odd person who doesn’t want to visit a dog friendly place. So if you get your wish you might find a lot of places go bust.

cant say I’ve heard of any kids being savaged to death in a cafe.

but I do hope your granddaughter has recovered from the nip she had on her ankle last week.

In Switzerland shops / cafes etc provide these handy hooks to clip the leash to while the owner goes inside and their sentient plaything remains safely outside. Let’s have this, away from the door so you can enter and leave without being bothered.

Next to the ashtray so all the antisocial shit stays out of the indoor space.

Lovely thread here about how dog friendly Switzerland is.

"Allowed in most places- restaurants, cafes, on public transportation, Only place where dogs are not allowed are in supermarkets."

"Super dog friendly!! Dogs are not allowed in supermarkets but in restaurants and cafes they are allowed in most of them."

A chippy in a seaside area got a bit of back lash last month when they declared from April-September due to being busy dogs will not be allowed inside.

Some people were just rude on their post.

“Well we will just go to Barbie’s then nicer chips anyway.” “Who wants to eat at this kind of dive then anyway”

Like what’s the need if Barbie’s is nicer go there anyway. If it’s a dive why are you moaning that dogs won’t be allowed inside when busy 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️.

The chippy is actually lovely but it’s rammed always they even have to cancel their delivery service in all school / bank holidays.

But suddenly now it’s a dive and not good 😂

Whereas other cafes are increasingly going dog friendly as they know it makes good business sense and you wouldn’t even know the vast majority of dogs are there.

There was a cafe owner on the other dog thread last week saying she’d never had issues at all with dogs in her cafe, how well behaved they all
are and how her cafe was very much dog friendly.

Gloriia · 10/04/2026 16:57

Our local garden centre has a lovely new 'no dogs please' sign after a poor (probably unwalked dog) did a poo. Not in the cafe thankfully, but in the plant area. The owner didn't have poo bag either 🙄.

outdooryone · 10/04/2026 16:58

I now refuse to shop or cafe or accommodation whatever if dogs are welcome.

I was in a rural pub a couple of weeks ago who were saying that despite some nasty reviews on Google and TripAdvisor, their decision to ban dogs from indoors and the beer garden has seen an upsurge in customers and overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Same weekend I walked into a cafe - three dogs and owner arrived in the queue behind me and began barking at another dog in the back. I told the cafe owner why I was leaving.

Vote with your money and tell businesses why.

So there you have it, @timetoban , posts becoming more and more hysterical in their hating of dog owners (‘rivers of shit’ ffs), until we get here, a vilely insulting post spitting with loathing.

Is that what you wanted?

If I google dog free cafes in York (where I live) all the results are the EXACT OPPOSITE.

Try it:

Dogs aren't allowed in Betty's or York Minster Refectory

Yeah that’s the problem. Places often dont advertise widely if they are dog free, only if dog friendly! So it doesn’t come up in online searches.

Even when I use booking dot com for hotels I can’t easily filter out the ones that allow dogs. I just have to search for hotels then read each hotel policy to see if it allows dogs or not .

But someone looking for a hotel that allows dog can easily tick filter to request dog friendly hotels.

I was going out for brunch in London and had to call several brunch places before I found ONE that said they didn’t allow dogs. It wasn’t on their website.

And for the ones that did allow dogs some of them didn’t have it on their website, I had to either call them or check their Instagram so tbh they don’t sometimes make it clear when their dog friendly either. More clarity on both sides to cater for everyone would be better.

ffsnewusername · 10/04/2026 17:02

@Bradbury4858My cafe is incredibly busy so it wouldn’t work. It would be unsafe for all involved imo plus, we have enough to do without cleaning up after animals.

If other cafes want to allow animals then good luck to them, I just follow what I and my staff want

ConstanzeMozart · 10/04/2026 17:03

YANBU. I like dogs, but I think it's a bit unsavoury having them in cafes when people are cooking and eating food.
I've also been in churches recently where people have brought them in and that doesn't seem right. Not least because, in one, it was quite dim lighting and the dog was on a low, drooping, dark lead and I only just saw it in time and almost tripped and went flying over it. Would have been a nasty scene if I'd fallen face-first on a flagstone floor.
And I live near a garden cemetery/bird reserve where dogs are allowed off-lead and they run off the paths into the undergrowth, and must freak out ground-nesting birds or birds foraging on the ground. Not to mention probably shitting near/on graves (it dates from the 19th C but people still have loved ones buried there and visit).

Interesting that @MandingoAteMyBaby edited her post to add the last line.
Obviously decided the original content was insufficiently full of hate.

Where do you lot live that there’s millions of dogs in every street?

As a PP said it’s clearly a business decision.

Just like when there’s a discussion on child free pubs etc - if it was financially viable, people would do it.

Garden centres are a bit confusing as they very often have an outside bit. My dog has pooed in the outdoor bit because to her, it is outdoors.
Of course, I picked it up.

Yes the dog lobby are a lot more vocal and some will pile on to criticise businesses that don’t allow dogs and there can be an image created that EVERYONE wants more dogs everywhere.

This means some businesses think it’s a win win if they allow dogs because in their eyes, they get more people coming in with dogs and the customers without dogs won’t mind and will still keep coming .

We need to let them know some of us who are not bringing dogs do in fact mind and we will not keep coming!

What they do with that info is up to them, but it’s definitely good to let them know.

At a shopping centre in Glasgow they got lots of complaints during a dog friendly trial so they abandoned it and went back to assistance dogs only.

In London, and yes there are loads.
I was also in Bath for a week recently and there were tons there too.

Bradbury4858 · 10/04/2026 17:10

Approximately 36% to 41% of households in the UK own a dog, with an estimated population of 11 to 15.5 million pet dogs. Data suggests over one-third of UK households include at least one dog, and roughly four in ten people live with a dog. The majority of dog-owning households (74%) have one dog.

That’s a lot of business to turn down! All the best cafes and pubs are dog friendly, they have a much nicer vibe. We have so many other customers coming over to pet our dog saying they wish they had one. You chat and it’s such nice atmosphere. The frothing dog haters can stay away.

Dogs aren’t my favourite either but the anti dog frothing on here is hilarious.

I don’t go in cafes etc because the sound of small children squealing and crying sets me off on sensory overload. And of course I can’t go to a child free place as there isn’t any such thing. So I do what I need to do.

If you can’t stand dogs, don’t go anywhere that’s dog friendly.
