to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

All the people who hate these dog posts, why keep joining in?

Because they take their dogs in cafes and feel like they have to justify it.
Also can't bear to think someone might not want their dog near them.
Have you seen the reactions when you ask them to get their dog away from you?

You asked a question.
Did you only want replies from people who agree with you?

Of course not

But I don't get why people keep saying not this post again etc. Why post then?

Because they start off as just not liking dogs in cafes. Which is fair enough.
But descend into vitriol and hyperbole about actual dog owners, with comments like dog owners not being able to form human relationships, all dog owners stinking and have poor hygiene. Just two examples.

These threads always go the same way. They get nasty. But maybe you knew that.

I think this is the answer!

Mine stay at home, but that doesn't mean no one else can take theirs.

Why did you start a new OP when there are so many identical OPs already?
It's the same thing.

I actually like dogs often better than their owners I just want to eat a meal and use the play park without them. Also shop without fur and puddles service dogs aside again.

Our local garden centre had to ban dogs. Too many toilet issues being not cleaned up, dogs fighting each other! And going on the display furniture. So actually that cafe is dog free now and they do a good breakfast.

Fibrous · 10/04/2026 16:20

I have two big, well behaved, calm greyhounds who love a cafe trip but we order inside and then sit outside, whatever the weather, as they are the size of small deer and very good at getting in the way if someone is walking past with something that smells interesting. It’s nice to tag a coffee shop on the end of a big walk. If I was just going out to meet someone for coffee, I’d leave them at home, but I expect most dog owners are also tagging it on to something else.

Dogs are now treated like children when they should be treated, respectfully, as the wonderful creatures they are. Dog behaviouralists only exist as a result of humans failing their dogs….. often by treating them as children.

Hatty65 · 10/04/2026 16:20

I've got dogs and I agree with you. I can't see the bloody point of people walking their dogs round shops and in cafes and yet I see it all the time.

Take the dog for a walk on the beach, or in fields or woods - or a park even. Don't drag the poor bugger round Dorothy Perkins.

Surely it’s just a supply and demand thing? If dogs in cafes or other places were unpopular generally, those businesses would surely struggle as footfall would be reduced, but the fact so many accept dogs and in increasing numbers suggests it’s good business sense to do so. It’s therefore hard to persuade a cafe owner to make a decision that might result in worse income, really, or to garner support from business owners for any kind of ban.

I’ve taken my dog to cafes, I’ve left her at home and gone to cafes where other dogs are in (and I do admit I enjoy seeing and saying hello to dogs in cafe and pubs etc!). Places like the LD are so heavily populated by dog owners that to not allow dogs would be very bad business sense for a lot of places.

Whydidyouletmedown · 10/04/2026 16:25

Not another thread about the same thing. Why don’t you just read one of the many existing ones instead of starting a new one.
FWIW, dogs are wonderful and should be allowed in all public spaces. 🐕🐾🐕🐾

My dog thinks people who don’t like dogs should be banned from cafes. She wants to enjoy her puppacino without grumpy tutting in the corner thanks.

Do you make your kids sit on the floor in cafes?

Bradbury4858 · 10/04/2026 16:26

🤣 Good try! Said dog attacks are by XL Bullies which are never in cafes.

Sweetpea333 · 10/04/2026 16:27

Yes. I was in a trendy cafe/bookshop today and there were 2 dogs. One was disruptive and the other STANK.

You agree there have been multiple threads already then? And surely you see that economic forces will outweigh an individual customer’s desire to ban dogs? So the question really is, why have you begun this thread? With your very appropriate username?

Bit bored?

Onleemoi · 10/04/2026 16:27

I honestly despair of how some MNers treat their children. Poor things.

Or into John Lewis to 'try a coat on' as I disbelievingly read the other day on here.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/04/2026 16:28

You can’t take dogs in shopping centres. I’m in London, you can’t take dogs in either of the huge Westfields, Bluewater, Lakeside, Canary Wharf shopping centre. These are the shopping centers closest to me and they are massive and no dogs !

you can take dogs in John Lewis and Liberty in the West end (individual shops) so people blathering on about shopping centers are talking SHITE.

golla346 · 10/04/2026 16:28

I own dogs and I don’t even wanna see them out and about. They should be banned from anywhere that serves food end of. They shouldn’t be allowed in shops either unless it’s a service dog. Dog are everywhere what happened to leaving them at home?

It was a coat for a dog. It makes sense to see that it fits. 🙄
