Would you expect another evening meal after a 4pm pub roast?

If you had a pub roast dinner at 4pm; would you expect to have a dinner that evening?

Please settle an argument with my DH…

🙄

Care to elaborate?

Pedallleur · 05/04/2026 20:12

No. A 4pm feed would be enough esp if roast meat is involved

The pub roasts I’ve had are an appropriate sized portion of food but it’s calorie dense. Hence for a petite woman in her 30s (as I am), they end up being my daily calorie intake, especially if combined with a pint of beer or glass of wine.

It isn’t about gorging or stuffing one’s face with copious amounts of food, it’s about recognising the different calorific value of different meals. The soup I have for lunch at work is clearly fewer calories than a pub roast, hence on a typical work day I will eat more than just lunch. Like I say, it’s just regulating food intake to accommodate the huge variety of calorific value of meals.

It’s really not rocket science.

But presumably your norm is one 'main' and one 'light' meal a day (plus breakfast). Just eat the same amount of calories when eating out for your main meal that you would when eating in for your main meal? You don't need starters, puddings, alcohol or to clear your plate if that's not a good fit for your food needs/calorie requirements.

Manicmondayss · 05/04/2026 20:12

Chuck him a packet of crisps

Ineffable23 · 05/04/2026 18:18

No. I would expect anyone who wanted supper could get toast or a sandwich or a bowl of cereal later in the evening.

Yes this - it would be fend for yourself.

I also wouldn’t be shaming anyone who was hungry again though.

BMW6 · 05/04/2026 20:13

So is he expecting you to cook him a full meal OP? Why can't he cook for himself or get a takeaway if he really needs another substantial meal?
Why is it YOUR issue to deal with?

Growlybear83 · 05/04/2026 20:15

we would probably have a snack at about 9pm

Pineapplewaves · 05/04/2026 20:16

The pub roast would be my dinner. I would have had a small snack at lunchtime, perhaps some toast and a yogurt.

I would probably be hungry a little later on and if we’re talking about today then I’d have a nice cup of tea and some Easter Egg or a hot cross bun this evening.

4 pm is a strange time to eat and not a time we would chose, we would go out for lunch or dinner rather than a late afternoon meal.

In answer to your question, not another dinner no but I’d want something.

WilfredsPies · 05/04/2026 20:17

I personally wouldn’t, although a bag of pickled onion Monster Munch would probably go down very nicely about 9pm.

But that doesn’t make you right. Someone with a faster metabolism, or an overactive thyroid, or diabetes, or a physical worker, or too many carbs/not enough protein, or even someone who isn’t sleeping properly can want and/or need more food. I might not be willing to make it for them, but I certainly wouldn’t judge someone who wanted more food after a 4pm roast. Nor would I try suggesting to anyone that they shouldn’t need to eat again simply because I didn’t need to eat again. That would be pretty outrageous and not something I’d tolerate if the situations were reversed.

Liveshives · 05/04/2026 20:19

Definitely not.

Lavenderandbrown · 05/04/2026 20:26

Can someone describe a typical “pub roast” to this American please.

GarlicFind · 05/04/2026 20:29

Yes!

But I wouldn't be demanding anyone else cook it for me. I could either rustle something up for myself or order in. As could your DH.

reluctantbrit · 05/04/2026 20:33

Yes because I can’t stomach a large savoury meal at 4pm.

i would have only nibbled or ordered a starter if at all.

4pm is cake time for me.

2 slices of roast meat, 3 roast potato pieces, roast parsnips, some steamed veg, a stuffing ball or two and some gravy. Starters or puddings optional, as are alcoholic drinks.

But also "Carvaries", where you'll be served 2 slices of meat, and then people help themselves to unneccessarily huge portions of potatoes & veg.

Daftypants · 05/04/2026 20:34

No , if I ate a full roast dinner early at about 4pm then I’d maybe want a very small snack at 8pm like a yogurt or a banana 🍌 something like that

ToffeePennie · 05/04/2026 20:35

No, but I would want cheese, crackers, maybe leftover pizza, grapes etc.

Roast meat, roast potatoes, gravy, veg, Yorkshire pudding (baked batter), drinks, optional dessert.

Would you expect another evening meal after a 4pm pub roast?
Amodernhistory · 05/04/2026 20:35

Just popped on for the competitive under eating and greed shaming posts, not disappointed

No

I don’t know why we’re still discussing this, but my ‘norm’ is actually 2 meals a day. When I go out to eat, I prefer not to order the lower calorie options or waste half the meal so as to allow myself to have a second meal that day. Instead I order what I want, have a glass of wine or two, and skip the second meal that day.

This way has worked for me, in terms of maintaining my weight, for years and years. If it’s not for you, then fine. We’re all different.

thewonderfulmrswatson · 05/04/2026 20:41

I wouldn't but my husband would. Hr is a 6'6 bottomless pit & as we say in Ireland "he'd eat a potato more than a pig"

TheDenimPoet · 05/04/2026 20:43

I would only ever expect one full, cooked meal a day - a sandwich or some other snack would be fine if I'd had a roast, even if it was at lunchtime to be honest.

CurlewKate · 05/04/2026 20:43

Well, if “expects” means he’s expecting you to cook it for him, then he’s wildly unreasonable. If he’s hungry and cooks himself something that’s entirely up to him.

Helpfullnelly · 05/04/2026 20:44

Our house is
Breakfast at 9.30
Lunch at 2
Tea at 8
So if we had waited and had Lunch at 4, we would both have food again around 9 ish, but it would be an omelette, toastie or similar

letshavetea · 05/04/2026 20:50

We had a roast dinner at 2pm. Had cheese, biscuits and fruit about an hour ago.
