If you had a pub roast dinner at 4pm; would you expect to have a dinner that evening?

Please settle an argument with my DH…

No, a quick sandwich around 8pm at most.

Frugalgal · 05/04/2026 19:43

God no but I wouldn't be able to eat another meal if I had a pub lunch at lunch time.

Elphamouche · 05/04/2026 19:43

No but I would have a snack later

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 05/04/2026 19:44

A pub roast!!! That’s all I eat in a fortnight! Can’t believe some people are so greedy 🙄

One meal a fortnight? Are you a large lady?

ChillingWithMySnowmies · 05/04/2026 19:47

before the chronic undereater accusations come at me from certain quarters.. i'm a size 26. Trust me, i eat well XD

OneNewLeader · 05/04/2026 19:47

No, it’s an early supper.

I mean, actually, it’s all I’d eat in a month, but I didn’t want to be accused of competitive under eating. Sorry, can you just hold the line for a moment? I need to go flip my shite about toilet brushes and shake and cry when someone knocks on the door.

Ponoka7 · 05/04/2026 19:53

We finished our pub roast, with pudding around 3pm. We've just had rolls, while watching the football. We are going to our local and will have crackers and cheese when we get in, slightly inebriated. Normal eaters would have planned a supper. It's a feast day.

Fiddlesticks1 · 05/04/2026 19:55

I wouldn’t but my teenage grandson would and my husband would more than likely eat a couple of sandwiches.

BCBird · 05/04/2026 19:55

No, but if that had to be lunch and evening meal combined at 4pm, I would need to have some sort of snack if I'd essentially missed a meal.
He can self cater

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 05/04/2026 19:57

No but perhaps a snack

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 05/04/2026 19:58

No

AnneElliott · 05/04/2026 19:59

I wouldn’t want dinner or tea but might do toast or cheese and crackers. But I certainly wouldn’t be cooking again.

Friendlygingercat · 05/04/2026 19:59

If its a pub roast presumably it ends about 6pm. If people are hungry later they can make themselves a snack - a sandwich or toast etc. But I would not expect another full scale meal.

ChangeAgainAgainAgain · 05/04/2026 20:01

The only reason someone would want to skip the third meal of the day is if they'd overeaten earlier in the day. Just because you're eating out, it doesn't mean you need to eat more than you normally would. Why would you want to cram in two meals worth of food in one go. Surely that must cause awful stomach ache and discomfort?

Typically I'd have breakfast between 7am and 8am, a light lunch between 12pm and 2pm and an appropriately sized dinner between 7pm & 9pm. If I had my main meal at lunchtime, I'd still want my light meal at dinnertime.

The only reason people are saying they wouldn't have a 3rd meal is because 4pm is a ridiculous time for a meal, and because they're troughing down two meals worth of food in one go, rather than sticking to sensible portions..

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 05/04/2026 20:01

Of course not. Greedy pig.

But why are you gorging down a whole day's worth of calories in one meal? Why not just eat an appropriate sized portion for lunch, rather than overeating?

The 4pm timing is the ridiculous thing here, not people wanting to stick to 3 (appropriately sized) meals in a day. It forces people to either overeat or go hungry.

Edited

The pub roasts I’ve had are an appropriate sized portion of food but it’s calorie dense. Hence for a petite woman in her 30s (as I am), they end up being my daily calorie intake, especially if combined with a pint of beer or glass of wine.

It isn’t about gorging or stuffing one’s face with copious amounts of food, it’s about recognising the different calorific value of different meals. The soup I have for lunch at work is clearly fewer calories than a pub roast, hence on a typical work day I will eat more than just lunch. Like I say, it’s just regulating food intake to accommodate the huge variety of calorific value of meals.

It’s really not rocket science.

CinnamonBuns67 · 05/04/2026 20:07

No. Perhaps some toast or a sandwich or something else small if I got a bit snacky later in the evening but not a full meal. I tend to find roasts fill me up.

Marylou2 · 05/04/2026 20:07

Definitely not. My dad always joked when eating at 3/4 o'clock that he didn't want to spoil his dinner. Now only my daughter's boyfriend can manage another meal but he needs 4000cal + due to sports training.

Zanatdy · 05/04/2026 20:07

definitely not. Even if I had the roast at 12-1pm, I still wouldn’t be expecting another hot meal that day. Who wants to cook another meal when you’ve had a roast at 4pm? Get some toast if still hungry.

Indeed, people sitting there and forcing two meals worth of food in one sitting are indeed greedy pigs. They need to learn some restraint.

FoolOfShips · 05/04/2026 19:09

Yes, agree - I watch my calories and if it was more than my daily allowance, I'd make it my only meal of the day, regardless of when I'd eaten it.

I honestly thought this was fairly normal.

JehovasFitness · 05/04/2026 20:09

Surely today it’s a hot cross bun before bed.
