If you had a pub roast dinner at 4pm; would you expect to have a dinner that evening?

Please settle an argument with my DH…

I don’t know why we’re still discussing this, but my ‘norm’ is actually 2 meals a day. When I go out to eat, I prefer not to order the lower calorie options or waste half the meal so as to allow myself to have a second meal that day. Instead I order what I want, have a glass of wine or two, and skip the second meal that day.

This way has worked for me, in terms of maintaining my weight, for years and years. If it’s not for you, then fine. We’re all different.

You decide to eat your entire daily calories in one meal. That's quite unusual, and most people would absolutely consider that overeating at that meal (and horribly uncomfortable).

It's not somehow morally superior to overeat at one meal and then skip the other meals rather than spreading your calorie intake over three more moderate meals.

Of course, you do you. But there's nothing wrong with people wanting to eat their third meal of the day because they've not overeaten at one meal earlier. Someone having a moderate portion of roast dinner for lunch and a light dinner is not "greedy" as many on here are trying to make out.

RedSoloCup · 05/04/2026 20:52

We had a 1pm buffet lunch and no one here has suggested dinner / tea !

SterlingsGold · 05/04/2026 20:56

No, not a full meal. I might have something before bed though, maybe a small sandwich or some cheese on toast.

If you’re going to cook a hot meal yourself after having already had a larger than average meal at 4pm fair enough. But if you’re expecting someone else to want to cook after eating a roast? Unreasonable.

Eggybreadwithnuts · 05/04/2026 20:56

No you've just had your evening meal. Light Supper - maybe something to nibble on like:

Few crackers and cheese
Tortillas dips
Slice of toast, cheese on toast
OR
Bowl of cornflakes...my go to ☺️ bet you're hubby's horrified at that!!!!

Are you feeling alright? You seem to be taking this all rather personally.

On non-exercise days, I need around 1,200-1,400 calories a day. Look up restaurant menus and you will see that some mains (e.g. pub roast…) plus 1-2 drinks is EASILY that many calories. It’s not about overeating or feeling uncomfortable (why on earth would I force food down and make myself uncomfortable?), it’s about recognising that different meals have different calorific values and adjusting food intake to accommodate for that. I honestly don’t know why that is so hard to understand and what on earth ‘moral superiority’ has to do with anything here.

ConnieHeart · 05/04/2026 20:57

4pm for me is a weird time to have my main meal so I'd assume I'd already had a snack around midday so I'd probably just have a sandwich later

maddiemookins16mum · 05/04/2026 20:58

No but might fancy a couple of Jaffa cakes by 9pm.

Twilight7777 · 05/04/2026 20:59

Yes but it would be like a mini ‘tapas’ of sorts or cheese and crackers type meal

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 05/04/2026 21:00

No!! Maybe a sandwich or cereal much later but definitely not a meal!!!!

DaveGroh · 05/04/2026 21:00

No way, would have some toast about 8/9pm

OP hasn't said that anyone expected a hot meal or for her to cook it for them.

I think it's perfectly normal to eat 3 meals a day, breakfast, a "main" meal and a "light" meal. It's odd to think it's better to overeat at one meal and then skip the light meal rather than moderating yourself and splitting your calorie intake across the day.

Wtafdidido · 05/04/2026 21:01

I would t but I also would t be expected to provide one. If they want one they can do it themselves!

Melancholyflower · 05/04/2026 21:02

Crushed23 · 05/04/2026 20:09

I honestly thought this was fairly normal.

No, it's normal to eat if you feel hungry, so if you have a main meal at 4.30 pm and then feel hungry at 8 pm, you have something to eat, probably as most have said a light meal/snack such as a sandwich or crackers etc.
I'm surprised by the number of people who've said they'd have A slice of toast, because I always do two and have never been too full to finish them.

I'm feeling fine. Just find it odd that people are saying it's better to overeat at one meal a day rather than eat 3 moderate (which will vary from person to person) meals evenly spread over the day.

it's not normal to only eat one meal a day.

Ponderingwindow · 05/04/2026 21:08

No.

i often eat my evening meal around 4:30-5. I sometimes have something small later in the evening like some fruit or nuts. If I am especially peckish I will make a quarter sandwich..

CurlewKate · 05/04/2026 21:14

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 05/04/2026 19:48

I mean, actually, it’s all I’d eat in a month, but I didn’t want to be accused of competitive under eating. Sorry, can you just hold the line for a moment? I need to go flip my shite about toilet brushes and shake and cry when someone knocks on the door.

Oh god-I do hope nobody asks you if you could give them a lift to somewhere you’re going already……

Absolutely not, even at 2.30- 3pm id probably only have a piece of fruit and a yoghurt much later.

EchoedSilence · 05/04/2026 21:06

it's not normal to only eat one meal a day.

Indeed. And if you eat your entire daily calorie requirements in one meal, it's overeating at that meal for you (even if it's a moderate amount of calories for someone else with a different metabolism).

TeaAndTattoos · 05/04/2026 21:17

Bloody hell no I would still be too stuffed.

Cyclebabble · 05/04/2026 21:20

A very light meal. Maybe a sandwich. I certainly would not be setting up a large meal.

Most people I know don’t eat 3 meals when its a Sunday roast. Unless not eating the roast until 5-6pm. Otherwise they eat a bigger meal than average and have 2 meals that day. Cannot imagine wanting another hot meal after a 4pm roast. And i’d put good money on the fact the person wanting the meal, isn’t the one planning to cook it. Hence this question.

No worries! I can send them a link to Uber with a tinkly laugh.

Pandasarethebest · 05/04/2026 21:24

No way. I had a roast at 1pm and still full. I had a bit of toast at 8pm byt inky because I didnt want to feel hungry in the night.
