Would you expect another evening meal after a 4pm pub roast?

If you had a pub roast dinner at 4pm; would you expect to have a dinner that evening?

Please settle an argument with my DH…

We had a roast at 12.30 today, finished pudding at about 1.30. I'm still not hungry so im guessing, no I wouldn't if I ate at 4pm.

But that's me. If someone else does, I dont mind. We dont expect to eat the same things at the same time, all the time however.

Mightneedencouraged · 05/04/2026 19:27

seriously all the no people hit the same as the"well after this big breakfast we won't need anything else!!!" bossy types.

4pm is a weird time to eat. If you're awake until 1am (I will be) there's definitely time for actual dinner.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 05/04/2026 19:29

@Minimiliand @Besidemyselfwithworry- if we’re not using “picky bits” or “nibbles” or “snacks”, what are we using to describe this sort of foods that are a step up from crisps/chocolate ? “Indoor picnic” is another I’ve heard.

no, pudding a few hours after but other than that then no unless the 4pm was a very small one

ChillingWithMySnowmies · 05/04/2026 19:30

absolutely not. don't be ridiculous.

might have a crumpet or some toast if i get peckish, but a cooked dinner? Hell no.

Do you go to bed at a child's time though?

Barney16 · 05/04/2026 19:32

Nope, hot cross bun or a piece of toast. Partner would want another meal but he can find the microwave himself.

Thanks all! I feel very much vindicated.

If he wants to eat something that's up to him surely but is he expecting you to cook for him or eat also?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 05/04/2026 19:33

I agree that 4pm is a terrible time to eat.

Anyway OP, was the problem that there was no food in / no plan for food in the evening at all?

YourJoyousDenimExpert · 05/04/2026 19:33

Maybe cheese and biscuits/crackers - but not a full meal.

Foxytights · 05/04/2026 19:34

No

what does that have to do with anything?

No.. i'm not in the habit of eating big meals after 8pm, i go to sleep about 2. and don't usually eat breakfast til 10am either.

saminamama · 05/04/2026 19:35

No maybe just a small snack

We had lunch at 2pm and it was a massive roast I’m not overly hungry but I’ve got some cheeses, biscuits, grapes, pickles and then some Easter cakes the kids made so just bits to snack on.

I will refrain from using the term “picky bits” as it boils my blood!

Omg I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's blood this boils 😂

Crushed23 · 05/04/2026 18:57

No.

A pub roast is easily my daily calorie intake (if not more), so I would make sure I had no breakfast that day, never mind an evening meal after.

But why are you gorging down a whole day's worth of calories in one meal? Why not just eat an appropriate sized portion for lunch, rather than overeating?

The 4pm timing is the ridiculous thing here, not people wanting to stick to 3 (appropriately sized) meals in a day. It forces people to either overeat or go hungry.

intrepidpanda · 05/04/2026 19:37

Not a proper dinner, but maybe something light later evening.

If you go to bed at an adult time then there are about 8 hours between 4pm and then.

Those who say they want a toastie and fruit or something, why? And when? The roast was at 4 so not finished until 6pm and some are saying they’d eat again at 7 🤢

It doesn't take me 2 hours to eat a roast dinner.

fetchacloth · 05/04/2026 19:37

Definitely not for me.

and? having eaten good breakfast at 10am, and a full roast at 4pm, there's no way i'd be eating another full cooked meal between then and bedtime.

Same as i'd have a light lunch about 2pm if i was having my Dinner at 7 (like i just did) i'd chose a light meal, like toast/crumpets about 8.30pm.. and STILL not eat again before i go to bed at 2am.

you're not a child, you aren't going to starve to death if you don't have two fully cooked meals a day.

TryAndGetOutOfThat · 05/04/2026 19:40

4pm is very late for a lunch, or early for a dinner. A snack of a sandwich or some fruit at about 8pm would be more suitable.

muddyford · 05/04/2026 19:41

I might have a slice of toast but more likely just a glass of milk.

intrepidpanda · 05/04/2026 19:42

That being said. I often have my lunch at 3-4pm and still have a dinner.
Lunch at 4pm and Dinner at 9pm

No

In the words of Jim Royle to Barb…
I’ll just have a couple of lightly boiled eggs!
