If you had a pub roast dinner at 4pm; would you expect to have a dinner that evening?

Please settle an argument with my DH…

Most people I know don’t eat 3 meals when its a Sunday roast. Unless not eating the roast until 5-6pm. Otherwise they eat a bigger meal than average and have 2 meals that day. Cannot imagine wanting another hot meal after a 4pm roast. And i’d put good money on the fact the person wanting the meal, isn’t the one planning to cook it. Hence this question.

I don't eat 2 hot meals (as in proper cooked dinners) on any day.

On a day when eating a roast, I'd have breakfast as usual, plus a "light" meal (e.g one of sandwich, cheese and crackers, soup, salad, boiled eggs etc) just as I would every day for my "light" meal. I wouldn't overeat a huge portion of roast dinner that meant I was still full at the next normal meal time. I'd only eat the same amount as I would at any meal.

PIL were visiting once and we had an unplanned meal out which was ginormous in the middle of the afternoon. We got home shortly after finishing at 6pm and FIL had an almighty tantrum about me not cooking a full meal for 7.30pm. Just wanted to eat for the sake of it.

I usually need something toast and a yoghurt at some point.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 05/04/2026 21:32

@Dinnerargument- the only way this could be very annoying would be if you at someone else’s house and couldn’t just help yourself to a light meal /heavy snack in the evening.

@Dinnerargumentwhich side were you on in this argument? Most men and teens I know would want another meal, most women wouldn’t.

Depends if the person who is ‘expecting’ an evening meal is expecting someone else to cook it. No judgement if they’re going to sort themselves out. I’d be planning a wine and cheese evening if it was me.

Agree, I'd like to know what the word 'expect' means here.

I wouldn't want to eat a meal after that, maybe an apple at 9ish max, but if someone else did then fine. Long as they understood it was for them to sort.

Mumandcarer80 · 05/04/2026 21:44

No I would still be digesting my roast I might have some toast or crumpets before bed but that’s it. I did a lamb hotpot wasn’t a massive portion me and DD are still full. DS though keeps looking in the fridge think he’s hinting.😂😂😂

Pbkwo · 05/04/2026 21:46

I would, 4pm is so early for tea and late for dinner, I’d be hungry around the time I normally eat tea.

BettyRizzoSlaps · 05/04/2026 21:47

I couldn't eat another full meal after a roast at 4pm, no. I'd be the same as most of you and maybe have some toast or a hot cross bun with a cuppa. And I'm a greedy guts.

But the absolute OUTRAGE on these threads make my eyes roll out of my head, honestly. The amount of 'Goodness, NEVER!" and" One roast dinner is all my calories for the month! "type comments.... Some of you need to seek advice for disordered eating.

Can someone describe a typical “pub roast” to this American please.

Edited

Every Sunday, damn near, people in the UK eat the equivalent of what a lot of Americans eat at Christmas - a roast meat of some kind (roast beef or roast chicken), then you get Yorkshire puddings, which the US doesn’t have an equivalent of, but they serve the same place in the meal as a roll or piece cornbread. Then you have roasted potatoes, which are crispy like chips on the outside and soft like mashed potatoes on the inside, maybe stuffing (maybe not) but stuffing here is a bit different than Stovetop, veg of some kind (this varies but could be carrots, peas, broccoli, something seasonal - usually simple). A little bit of each item goes in the plate and you can cover everything but the veg in gravy (or cover the whole thing in gravy). Gravy here is not as thick as US Southern gravy, and can be either transparent or opaque. It’s delicious and absolutely brilliant. Anyone who invites me for a roast dinner is a friend for life.

Mumandcarer80 · 05/04/2026 21:53

Forgot to say tell him to have a drink of water. Sometimes you think you’re hungry but what you really need is a drink. Plus it’s a bit late to be eating a full meal.

Mrscharlieeeee · 05/04/2026 21:55

We had a pub Sunday roast at 1pm today and have had another meal. My kids had sandwiches for supper about 7pm.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 05/04/2026 21:58

Oh this issue - we had a big family Easter lunch.

DS’s girlfriend invited him over this afternoon and he went about 4pm. Except bit of a mix up and they were doing their big meal for dinner, not lunch. He’s just had a second roast dinner. I know teen boys can take on a lot of calories- but he’s just got home and is struggling - might not be a big breakfast tomorrow!

kohlrabislaw · 05/04/2026 22:00

No

Sooose · 05/04/2026 22:01

Surely part of the joy of having a pub lunch, whatever the time, is NOT HAVING TO COOK AGAIN AT HOME THAT DAY!

If he's hungry later he can sort himself out, surely?

CustardySergeant · 05/04/2026 22:02

No I wouldn't.

no!

kohlrabislaw · 05/04/2026 22:02

Maybe a hot cross bun will fill the gap?

ThatWaryLimePeer · 05/04/2026 22:03

Definitely a sandwich and crisps around 8. What other meals have you had, was the roast your lunch?

Empress13 · 05/04/2026 22:03

God no

DeltaVariant · 05/04/2026 22:08

No. I have severe reflux so don’t eat after 6pm, and I eat with the kids so that works well anyway.

cantgardenintherain · 05/04/2026 22:08

No

sittingonabeach · 05/04/2026 22:08

We did today. Get up late. Brunch at 11. Easter eggs for snacks. 4.30 lunch (massive roast). Job done.

Justnetballandcoffee · 05/04/2026 22:18

We had our roast lamb dinner at about that time today (maybe 4:30) and I thought I might need a snack around 7/8 but I didn't. Now I think about it I could probably eat but it's a bit late!

In summery, no but I might want a snack depending on how much I ate, something like crackers and cheese.
