Would you expect another evening meal after a 4pm pub roast?

If you had a pub roast dinner at 4pm; would you expect to have a dinner that evening?

Please settle an argument with my DH…

Late to the party but no I wouldn’t have another meal. Maybe some toast or cheese and crackers or something.

That said, the good thing about being an adult is that if you did want another meal you could make yourself one- and your partner is presumably free to do that!

Chilly80 · 05/04/2026 22:20

Absolutely not

InLoveWithAI · 05/04/2026 22:20

Competitive under eaters are out in force 🤣

It's funny how 2/3 of the UK is overweight yet nobody in Mumsnet is eating more than one meal a day at 500 cals 🙄

TappyGilmore · 05/04/2026 22:21

Of course not. Small snack if hungry later on but definitely not dinner.

Boolabus · 05/04/2026 22:24

I made roast lamb dinner today for family, we ate at 2pm. Very full after just managed crackers and cheese and a hot cross bun about an hour ago

HPD76 · 05/04/2026 22:31

We had a 1pm pub roast and a big walk after, we had homemade lentil soup at 7pm and are going to bed feeling pretty full. Toast and other snacks are available if anyone gets hungry.

Purplerainblue · 05/04/2026 22:35

no, I’ve known men to probably order a little take away at like 9pm if they wish but I’d much rather snack after a big roast. I ate one at 5 and I snacked in between that and getting into bed

Mermaidsarereal · 05/04/2026 22:36

No way, if you’re hungry then make a sandwich or have a bowl of cereal!

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 05/04/2026 22:39

A meal? No.
Some kind of light bite snack? Yes.

WaltzingWaters · 05/04/2026 22:46

jeez no way! After a pub roast I wouldn’t expect another meal even if the roast was at midday! But 4pm roast then expecting an evening meal is insanity.

ImFinePMSL · 05/04/2026 22:48

Everyone is different.

Some people have big appetites. Some people have no appetites at all.

Some people sit on their arses all day. Some people are active and always on the go.

Some people have physical or mental health conditions that can affect eating habits. Some people are lucky not to suffer.

Nobody should be shamed for eating when they’re hungry. & Nobody should be shamed for not
eating when they’re not hungry.

The obsession on eating and weight and size on Mumsnet is fucking insufferable.

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 05/04/2026 22:50

No, just some tea and toast (or other snack).

hiddeneverythin · 05/04/2026 22:50

Rainbowdottie · 05/04/2026 18:23

No absolutely not. If anyone was hungry like 8/9 pm or whatever, they can either make their own or have toast etc. I couldn’t personally eat again after that but that’s not far off our normal dinner time (5.30/6)

I actually stopped doing Sunday dinner or big occasions at lunchtime for this reason . I felt everyone wanting feeding again at “dinner time “. Like we’ve celebrated Easter with dinner at 5 where everyone I know would do 2/3 ish. That’s a nothing time to me and creating more work.

I’ve been having Christmas dinner about 5pm ish the last several years as we don’t eat any meal ever at 3pm so why would we on Christmas Day?

Anywherebuthere · 05/04/2026 22:53

Depends. What time would you be going to bed. Hunger is hunger. Sometimes it's boredom that makes you want to eat.

I wouldn't be cooking a meal a for anyone after a roast. But wouldn't argue about someone's reason to want to eat again.

FairKoala · 05/04/2026 22:55

Given you would finish the meal at around 5”6pm I wouldn’t say another meal in the evening but maybe something picky like cheese and biscuits or cheese on toast etc
Nothing you would eat with a knife and fork

you're missing the wording here 'expect'

It comes across as the OP is being expected to provide a further cooked meal.

If you want another evening meal, cook one, but don't 'expect' someone else to cook it for you.

GoldieLocks09 · 05/04/2026 23:06

We had a big roast at about 2pm, DC’s had scrambled egg on toast at about 6pm because they never indulge in the same way as adults tend to for a large meal. DH made a sandwich with leftover meat at about the same time, and had a bowl of cereal just before bed.

I couldn’t have sat down to anything else but did have a little pick at roast leftovers as I was clearing up!

KidsLifePathQuestion · 05/04/2026 23:08

No! A small something later in the evening but nothing requiring any effort!

Oh I am not aiming my comment at the OP.

I’m aiming it at all the posters who have crazy strong opinions on eating.

The OP shouldn’t be making a meal for someone. If that person is hungry (im assuming her grown ass husband or partner) they should make their own food.

TheWibble · 05/04/2026 23:29

No. I had a 2pm pub roast with pudding and this evening we just had toast and some crisps.

Shellythesnail2333 · 05/04/2026 23:33

As long as he doesn’t expect you to make it for him, then he can eat what he wants!

rc22 · 05/04/2026 23:34

Possibly toast, cereal or small sandwich but only eat one main meal a day regardless of what time it was eaten.

ComeOnPhilEarlySpringPlease · 05/04/2026 23:36

Dinner, no
Picky bits, snack or toastie, yes
Or crumpets or cheese and crackers
Probably around 9-9.30 with little prep needed

summergin · 05/04/2026 23:47

defo not a meal but snacks yes (especially if I’ve had a glass of wine or a beer with an Easter Sunday roast). However I do have terrible form for a heavy snack for every drink ratio 😆

HisNotHes · 05/04/2026 23:55

Absolutely no way!

Maybe mid evening a cup of tea and a slice of toast at most.
