Would you expect another evening meal after a 4pm pub roast?

If you had a pub roast dinner at 4pm; would you expect to have a dinner that evening?

Please settle an argument with my DH…

I wouldn't want a 'meal', but I would need something else before I went to bed.

DilemmaDelilah · 06/04/2026 09:34

My DH seems to think that if we have a main meal at lunchtime we shouldnt be hungry in the evening. My thinking is that the food has been digested by then so I am hungry again by the evening. I don't necessarily want another main meal... but I do want something. Move that by a few hours so 'lunchtime' is 4pm - I'm going to be hungry again by 9pm. I cant sleep if I'm hungry.

Different people have different metabolisms I guess.

Ninerainbows · 06/04/2026 09:41

It's not about total calories for the day for me. If I didn't eat from mid-afternoon until mid-morning the next day my blood sugar would be rock bottom.

Yes I agree. I'd want to eat something later on. That's why I hate having a meal at that time. It's neither lunch nor dinner time imo

Good god , what an arse he is ..what did you tell him to do ?
my FIL would’ve expected me 🙄 to prepare something for him but not a full meal

He was greedy and childish and had form for this kind of behaviour. He would gorge himself if it was someone else paying/providing.
I’ve come across a few men like this.

Surely this is the perfect opportunity for a hot cross bun

This is what I had! We had a roast at 1 so had Buns at 7. Was lovely.

zingally · 06/04/2026 13:04

No, but I'd probably want a fairly substantial snack around 9ish. Some toast or something.

C152 · 06/04/2026 13:20

Yes, because 4pm is too early for dinner (and far too late for lunch!) and I'd be hungry again before bed.

HoldingTheDoor · 06/04/2026 13:54

No I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t need anything else after that.

I agree. It annoys me when people invite us round for food at 4pm. Of course I appreciate anyone cooking for me but it confuses my system! OH on the other hand will eat a meal at any time of day

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 06/04/2026 15:08

@Dinnerargument- you need to come back and say what the background was, who wanted a second meal, who they expected to make it - and were you in your own home, so able to just help yourself if no one else was cooking? (There does seem to be an assumption you were at home and the hungry person could just get something to eat, if you had gone to family for Easter, it’s harder to just go start cooking at someone else’s house.)

JohnTheRevelator · 06/04/2026 15:43

A snack, like a sandwich at around 10pm but certainly not a full meal. And I say this as someone who is greedy has a good appetite.

BeddysMum · 06/04/2026 17:56

No, but I'm not a greedy pig 😂

HereWeGo1234 · 06/04/2026 18:04

We were in that situation yesterday and settled for a cheese and tomato sandwich and a few bites of my OHs Easter egg.

Ariana12 · 06/04/2026 18:13

Looks like we're all with you and not your DH🤣

ToadRage · 06/04/2026 18:18

Not a meal, no. 4 is an odd time to eat. It's too late to be lunch but too early to be dinner so i might want a snack later on to tide me over til bedtime but another meal would be too much food.

Tacohill · 06/04/2026 18:19

I wouldn’t expect anyone to cook for me but if I was hungry then I would eat.

I wouldn’t know until the actual day though.

Trishyb10 · 06/04/2026 18:22

I wouldnt, my daughter would…. .. .this is how folk get fat

Endorewitch · 06/04/2026 18:24

I would make a sandwich, but if someone in your famiy is hungry later, they could have sanwiches,a bit of cake maybe or cheeye and bread.
If someone is hungry obviously they need to eat!

ohyesido · 06/04/2026 18:26

That would be it for me, but my DH would happily scoff another full meal around 8pm

Really? We don't know who is who, but most are saying they'd want a further light meal in the evening, toast, cheese & crackers, hot cross buns, omelette etc. The ridiculousness is the 4pm meal time, which is neither suitable for lunch nor dinner. Whoever planned/booked that is an idiot, why on earth didn't they book either lunch (say 12-2pm) or dinner (say 6pm onwards)?

Livpool · 06/04/2026 18:31

No - maybe some crisps in the evening but that would be it

Allonthesametrain · 06/04/2026 18:36

No, just graze snacks xx

cowandplough · 06/04/2026 19:16

That depends!!!

Kellph83 · 06/04/2026 19:19

No. We had our Easter dinner at 3.30pm and I was stuffed into the night. Although we did make room for some lemon cheesecake at 7.30pm. Generally if I eat lunch later than 1pm I wouldn’t eat dinner. My DH was also stuffed but did eat some crackers about 9pm
