£30 Easter budget

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 11:43

My friend just told me her and her husband spend £30 each on each other on Easter eggs.

She’d prefer a nicer one and some small bits and he’d prefer lots of mid sized ones so he had about 8 eggs.

AIBU to think this is insane?

They have no kids.

Plenty of people earn 6 figures? It hardly uncommon these days. I find it harder to believe that anyone would be jealous of buying £30 of chocolate. Even if your into cheapo wine, you'll barely get a meal in a harvester for that amount

Different people post different things - who knew?

You didn't say buying, you said being given. They've very different things.
He'd be delighted if anyone gave him £30 worth of chocolate.

To be fair he's easily pleased, a bit like a human version of a labrador.

tofumad · 05/04/2026 15:53

I only like really good quality chocolate, so this budget sounds about right to me. Why is that a problem, if they are both happy with it?

Agapornis · 05/04/2026 15:56

It's nice to treat yourself and others.

I live alone and decorated my Easter tree with some new decs (I'm northern European), bough flowers and a new vase, a client bought me a Lindt bunny. I'll boil some eggs for breakfast tomorrow, might even paint them!

Everyone has very different ideas of whether and how to celebrate Easter/spring, and that's okay. I probably spent £25 on myself, excluding £40 of new garden plants.

Bloozie · 05/04/2026 16:08

Dave… Dave! They’re doing it again!

Who’s doing what dear?

The couple at No 5. They’ve been out again spending their money on… stuff!

Is it money they owe you?

No… But I don’t think they should be spending their money like that.

Like what?

On… stuff! They should spend it like we do.

Why don’t you come away from the window, dear. A Place In The Sun is on soon. You like that…

I buy my parents an egg.

But they have no kids?

I usually buy one big egg each, but decided to buy 2 smaller eggs each this year.

Each to their own.

Whaleandsnail6 · 05/04/2026 16:41

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 12:11

I think this is it. £60 on Easter eggs is insane for the two of them? Especially to have a pile of about 15 eggs just sat there? It seems so wasteful.

How on earth is it wasteful? Easter eggs won't go off and can be eaten after today. Its not like they will be thrown away

Its lovely they are spending the day doing things they will enjoy

Maybe you would get more enjoyment out of the day if you stopped being so judgemental over a friend who you claim to love , isn't hurting anyone and is enjoying time with their partner doing something a bit different and special.

You actually sound mean-spirited

JMSA · 05/04/2026 16:47

Of course it’s not insane. It’s only 30 quid, not a Fabergé egg.
Are you jealous?

BoogieTownTop · 05/04/2026 16:49

I think the OP is being eggstremly judgy about her friends!

MsSquiz · 05/04/2026 17:23

Before DH and I had kids, I would still decorate our house a bit for Easter and Halloween.
where is it in the “rule book” that only people with children can do this kind of thing? Child free people can decorate a biscuit and eat it, or buy a whole truck load of mini eggs and eat the if that’s what they want to do.

you sound exceptionally judgemental of your “friend” who is clearly just doing what they want to do and enjoying their life.

what they do doesn’t affect you at all, an in fact they can probably afford to spend that on each other for Easter because they don’t have kids!

LoveMySushi · 05/04/2026 17:26

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 11:47

It feels a bit show off and what adult needs ten eggs from their partner? That isn’t including any they’ll get from other people.

They always go over the top with spending insane amounts at Christmas too.

Well thats what happens when you dont have kids! You can overspend on your favourite person!
Everytime i wanna buy something super nice for DH i stop and think “Hmmm or I could get the cheap version and treat my kids at the same time..” 😂
Luckily DH doesnt think like that. He always spends on just me because kids have enough from me (us) and grandparents anyways.

MonsterasEverywhere · 05/04/2026 17:31

Well, I spent all of £1.50 on my partner for a little Easter treat, but that's because I don't have much spare cash but wanted to buy a couple of chocolate bunnies.

But as long as people are happy with the money they are spending and not getting into debt, I don't think it's anyone else's business what they spend.

Confuserr · 05/04/2026 17:33

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 12:38

Okay I accept IABU about this but I don’t know how to explain it.

I do love her dearly but she’s so over the top it just feels like everything has to be an event or an occasion and is very performative.

I asked her what she’s doing today and she said they’ve had mini egg pancakes for breakfast and are decorating Easter cookies later. I refuse to believe most normal adults without children are sat there decorating Easter themed cookies amongst piles of Easter eggs with their husband.

they live in the real world.

She sounds really fun and like she's enjoying life. Sorry that child free couples aren't just sitting around listening to radiohead and eating gruel.
Shame that she's got a friend who so obviously has a problem with her

Ffs god forbid someone who works and no kids spends there money on themselves! Why is it actually ur business anyways?

Manicmondayss · 05/04/2026 17:36

Sounds a bit childish but not much else to think about I guess

Tacohill · 05/04/2026 17:38

I think it’s really weird that adults buy other adults Easter eggs.

If you want one, then just buy it yourself.

I think £30 is a crazy amount to spend but I can see people spending it if they buy a couple of the big ones at £12 each.

Confuserr · 05/04/2026 17:38

FeliciaFancybottom · 05/04/2026 12:53

Is the real problem that they don't have children? Do you think child free adults should just sit in misery all year round?

She'd hate me and my husband. We had a "pancake week" and every day of the week we made (or went out for) increasingly more elaborate different pancakes. Although perhaps we should have spent it saving money and crying over not having kids?

Why does it sound childish? Are professional cake decorators childish? Why do people with no children have to constantly justify their time and interests. Who decided cookie decorating was for children only? Can we read books, watch TV? Can we cycle, can we go to the cinema. Can we pick flowers, can we enjoy nature and animals? Or are all of the lovely things in this world for children only?

I know, it drives me mad how others want to try and judge perfectly harmless activities.

I'd prefer to buy £30 worth of easter eggs for my partner, and then spend the day having pancakes and decorating cookies than spending £60 on 4 cocktails in a bar for an hour like a friend and her partner did. I don't judge them for it, they enjoyed it and each to their own, but that "adult activity" isn't my cup of tea.

Different people enjoy different things. And thats ok.

Because it’s like buying each other pancakes for pancake day or having a budget to buy each other fireworks on bonfire night.

Its not a day where you give gifts.

We give kids gifts because they can’t buy them themselves but then as they get older they start choosing the eggs they want, then you get even older and just buy them yourself.

I don’t know any adult that buys eggs for other adults.
I’ve never wondered what Easter my mum or dad want me to buy for them.

Precisely! A lot of people forget that not everybody without children made that choice. God forbid people try to enjoy themselves. I agree, it wouldn't be my first choice but I'm certainly not judging them, I would just choose to do something else that I personally enjoyed. I know which couple I'd rather spend time with though!

I buy my husband gifts all the time (and vice versa) because it makes us both happy. At the moment there's loads of delicious chocolate in the shops, so I bought him a lovely easter egg. He could get one himself but it's nicer to be treated by someone else - don't you agree?
And actually I did buy him pancakes for pancake day!

Are we policing gift giving now? This couple wanted to buy each other some eggs, who cares?

Again, easter is not just for kids, just like many other things in this world. Parents and children are not the only people who are allowed to enjoy their lives in their own way.

Have you tried being an actual friend? Like not judging her over her choices which really don’t harm you, not talking shit about her to others etc. Just a thought.
