£30 Easter budget

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 11:43

My friend just told me her and her husband spend £30 each on each other on Easter eggs.

She’d prefer a nicer one and some small bits and he’d prefer lots of mid sized ones so he had about 8 eggs.

AIBU to think this is insane?

They have no kids.

seriously how does this affect you? I’ll answer it for you…it’s doesn’t.

They have every right to spend their money how they want. They can have any little Easter traditions they want. It’s nothing to do with you.

You sound jealous that they are happy.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/04/2026 12:33

It does sound weird to me. Dh and I just buy each other a nice egg, or one we hope will be nice! So I’m a bit pissed off about the Lindor one I bought him - the actual egg is very small compared to the size of the box!

He bought me a Maltesers one - ratio of egg size to box is much more what I’d expect.

Lindor = swizz!

Beachtastic · 05/04/2026 12:34

Fair play, but are they enormous?!

SugarPuffSandwiches · 05/04/2026 12:34

I think this is it. £60 on Easter eggs is insane for the two of them? Especially to have a pile of about 15 eggs just sat there? It seems so wasteful.

Assuming they love chocolate if they get each other that much, how is it wasteful?
If they're going to eat it all?

LittleRoom · 05/04/2026 12:36

ThroughTheRedDoor · 05/04/2026 11:52

Hang on. Not including eggs they'll get from other people? I dont think I've ever bought an adult an easter egg apart from dh. How many eggs from other people will they get? Fascinating.

I've never even had one from DH! I don't think I've ever had an Easter egg as an adult.

I'm not one of those "adults don't need presents" types. I'm big into celebrations and get plenty for my birthday and Christmas. But I've always seen Easter eggs as for kids.

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 12:38

Okay I accept IABU about this but I don’t know how to explain it.

I do love her dearly but she’s so over the top it just feels like everything has to be an event or an occasion and is very performative.

I asked her what she’s doing today and she said they’ve had mini egg pancakes for breakfast and are decorating Easter cookies later. I refuse to believe most normal adults without children are sat there decorating Easter themed cookies amongst piles of Easter eggs with their husband.

they live in the real world.

Why is it wasteful if they get eaten? Don't get it

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 05/04/2026 12:39

I got my 3 DC standard eggs-one each under £5 Anything more is excessive IMO. The chocolate used is normally shit

Woodfiresareamazing · 05/04/2026 12:40

To use your favourite adjective, it's 'insane' to think two adults choosing to spend £60 on edible treats is insane.

Would it be 'insane' if they spent that on a meal out?
No, of course it wouldn't.

We all make choices on what treats we indulge in, nothing 'insane' about it.

Doggymummar · 05/04/2026 12:40

Why do people care what others do? We don't buy eggs, but we were out early to car boot and I bought my partner a burger, which was £7.50. scandalous

tealandteal · 05/04/2026 12:41

Before we had kids my husband bought me a hotel chocolat Easter egg, it cost a lot but he wanted to treat me and could afford it. This year we each got a creme egg. If it makes them happy why not?

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 05/04/2026 12:42

It's a miserable life if we only ever get what we need.

Nothing wrong with treats.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 05/04/2026 12:42

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 11:47

It feels a bit show off and what adult needs ten eggs from their partner? That isn’t including any they’ll get from other people.

They always go over the top with spending insane amounts at Christmas too.

I wouldn't mind that. 🤣 I suppose if they aren't going into debt why not?

CoyGoldenKoi · 05/04/2026 12:44

You're probably right that most adults aren't decorating Easter cookies etc.
But it's harmless and affects no-one else if that's what they want to do and what makes them happy, so get your nose out of their business.

Why does everyone need to subscribe to some joyless and regulated version of "normal" that you've decreed for them?

Also, nothing you've said suggests she's performative in any way. You've asked her questions, she's answered, and you've gotten stroppy and superior about her answers. All a you problem.

BeOchreDog · 05/04/2026 12:45

Why is decorating Easter biscuits weird? We had a gingerbread house decorating contest every year before our children were born. It was a bit of fun and something to do together!

So she’s not showing off, you asked her. You sound like a jealous person, it’s radiating off you. Grow up

BashfulClam · 05/04/2026 12:45

It’s no one elses business.

RisingSunn · 05/04/2026 12:46

Its their money and they enjoy it!

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 12:01

I buy my parents an egg.

Well that’s nice for your parents but your friends don’t have children to buy them one.
Don’t really get what you mean by wasteful as they’re just sat there? Do they not eat them?

Frugalgal · 05/04/2026 12:51

It all sounds quite infantilised but each to their own! There's a lot worse things they could be doing.

You can live in the real world and still have some whimsy. Why not?

Is the real problem that they don't have children? Do you think child free adults should just sit in misery all year round?

yet, you’ve decided to criticise everything she does.

TeflonBoot · 05/04/2026 12:53

What's wrong with buying your spouse an egg? My DH bought one for me, I didn't buy for him as he isn't that bothered about having one but I treat him in other ways.

What particular issue is it causing you? I ask this genuinely as I'm struggling to understand why you're so upset by it?
