AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 03:07

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Very weird. I must admit that even as a massive dog lover I could never have a dog that slobbered. Not many breeds slobber though

I’d forgive a boxer for slobbering, because they are super cute!

Dogs bums don't have shit on them after they've had a poo!

🙄🙇🏻‍♀️🙄🙇🏻‍♀️

it was probably brought in on the shoe of a human

Crazy isn't it someone who doesn't know how dogs bums work 😆

Think that's the bingo card full now.

Oh yeah second hand dog ownership is definitely as unhealthy as second hand smoking.

I mean it’s a really well know carcinogenic just like cigarettes.

Yes it’s well known that dog owners have higher blood pressure and worse immune systems.

@JulietteHasAGun

no wonder there are so many obese dogs kicking around

🙄🙇🏻‍♀️🙄🙇🏻‍♀️🙄🙇🏻‍♀️

JulietteHasAGun · 06/04/2026 12:18

In fairness I did have to wipe my dog’s bum after a poo this morning but that’s a rare occurrence!

@ILoveDaffodills

they can get bits of shit stuck in the fur around their arse though. Don’t tell me they can’t cos I’ve seen it more than once with my own eyes

No, it hadn't shat on itself, but it had visible shit around its backside so had clearly been brought in straight from taking a dump.

That’s odd. My dogs never have a residue just after they’ve shat. It’s a constant source of wonder to me.

Just examined my dogs' arseholes immediately after a poo. ..can confirm no remnants left behind.

I'm very sorry about your granddaughter & the distress it has caused you. Is there any CCTV in the cafe?

however, cafes are a business & are entitied to run them to make a profit & if dog owners are the ones spending the money that's who they're going to cater to IF people objecting to dogs being there were the majority, that's what they'd go with.

Could the cafe be sued if a customer is bitten I wonder?

I was in a small cafe attached to a library last month. Usually only a few adults there but fills with mums and babies once a week before Rattle&Rhyme.

A woman with a cockerpoo (guess) came in and lifted it onto a chair then went up to order coffee. The barrista brought her coffee and picked up the dog for a big cuddle and chat, then returned to the counter. Immediately the other staff member came for an even bigger cuddle and chat.
They were both in full uniform including apron. I can only hope they washed their hands after the cuddle, but I doubt that was in line with hygiene regulations. I was glad I'd already got my food and drink.

As suggested, I have just googled for dog-free cafes in my town. This is a dog-free cafe in the building of a dog-free (except asistance dogs) library. Only obviously the staff clearly have other ideas, and they are not hygenic at all.

https://yougov.com/en-gb/articles/52853-where-is-it-acceptable-to-bring-dogs-and-children

’Almost half of Britons say they “love” dogs (46%), with a further 26% saying they like them. Only 10% hold a negative opinion of canines, while another 16% are neutral on ‘man’s best friend’.’

‘Of the 12 locations we asked about, dogs are most welcome in pubs that do not serve meals. Overall, 82% of people think dogs should be allowed in at least a portion of such venues, including 57% who think they should be allowed in the majority or entirety of the premises.’

‘Almost three quarters of the public (72%) think dogs should likewise be allowed in coffee shops, but they are split between the 38% who think dogs should be allowed throughout or in most of the space versus the 34% who think they should be restricted to a certain section.’

That is not research about what we were talking about, and what i asked for, the profitability of businesses which do and don't allow dogs.

How people say they feel for a poll is very often not actually reflected in how they behave.

A person may love dogs but still avoid the cafe round the corner where they know one barks. Or hate dogs but still go to the place with the fabulous home made cakes.

No they can’t

Why not?
Surely they bear some of the responsibility if they allow dogs on the premises?

No they don’t. A dog is always the owner’s responsibility. That’s why responsible owners have insurance.

I tried to pm you recently to let you know I was thinking of you.

I can see why you turned them off. That thread was bizarre (as per!)

That is thoughtful of you, thank you :)
I miss her so much. It still hurts.

This weekend, I am going to a local monthly greyhound walk. There will be about 60 hounds there. It will be lovely doggy therapy :)

I don’t think the dog lovers “drag” their dogs anywhere. Such emotive language.

You're right. Mostly it's the owners being dragged by the dogs, not the other way round.

dreamiesformolly · 06/04/2026 13:07

mydogisthebest · 06/04/2026 12:05

If a dog if fed decent food it should not have an upset stomach very often. Maybe once a year, if that, our previous dogs had an upset stomach. Our present dog who we have had just about a year has not had an upset stomach in that time

With a good diet it's rare, agreed. The pp was talking like it literally never happens, though, which makes me think they've just never encountered it.

I think it would be hard to find that sort of data because for a true comparison you need 2 identical cafes, in the same location, serving the same menu at the same prices.

all I can give you is 2 local anecdotes. One historically non dog friendly cafe trialled letting dogs in for half the week. They now let dogs in every day and say they are busier since doing so.

Another small country estate near me has two cafes. One lets dogs in the other doesn’t. The menus are different and the vibe of them is quite different though so hard to compare. Similar pricing. Both are very busy with queues out the door. The dog friendly one is higher on the trip advisor ratings and I would say is the more popular one. 🤷‍♀️. It does do better coffee though so maybe that’s why.

So sorry I didn’t provide ‘what you asked for’. You’ve repeatedly said you’d like to see the accounts of businesses before an after they allowed dogs. Astonishingly, these are not readily available. And wouldn’t tell you much anyway, given a) there’s a number of variables and b) you only believe what suits you.

Theoryofmind2026 · 06/04/2026 13:18

We're all sick of it, tbh. Dogs aren't people and shouldn't be compared to or treated as people. Most people get that, to be honest, the vast majority agree with you. It's just on here you have the dog nutters gathering.

Dog owners are not stupid. We know our dogs are not people. I have never met someone who thought their dog was human. Taking them to a café is not treating them as human.
It is treating them as a companion that you want to spend time with.
