AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

1000 replies

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 03:07

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

So first businesses only accept dogs as a vendetta against people who don’t like them and now people only say they like dogs as they’re bullied if they don’t? Lots of leaping to conclusions.

Believe me, those of us who don’t like dogs get a hard time about it. You only need to look at any dog thread on here, people who don’t like dogs are frequently called weird and I have even seen us referred to as psychos on mumsnet.

You can take dogs in Starbucks. They do free pup cups.

@JulietteHasAGun

no wonder there are so many obese dogs kicking around

Then I'm sure cafes and businesses won't mind making recompense when something goes wrong.

Well from a legal pov they don’t have to. Your compensation claim for recompense you believe you’re owed is against the dog owner. If a dog on a public footpath bit you would you sue the council?

Onleemoi · 06/04/2026 11:21

That, the name calling, cheap digs and being adamant their wants are the only ones that matter.

And the exaggerations and lies too.

No one is "bullied" for not liking dogs FFS. Someone probably raised an eyebrow when that poster went off an an unhinged anti-dog rant, and she's now framing that as BULLYING.

Just like 99% of dogs do not bite children, knock random strangers over or shit in cafes.

Whereas those of us who like dogs are labelled as selfish idiots who are unable to form relationships with human beings. Six of one and half a dozen of the other.

I really think the spitting venomous loathing I see for dogs on here is pretty rare irl.

I don't like to use a table that a dog has slobbered over. That's my preference. I doubt I'd get ill or anything but I don't like the thought of it.

Humans do disgusting things on tables, most commonly put bags on them that have been on the floor, but also done change nappies on them. If you want to be sure of a hygenic table you need to carry wipes with you & use them.

Onleemoi · 06/04/2026 11:44

Is being called weird on mn enough to make people pretend to like dogs? I got told the world would be a better place if my dog and I were dead once, via private message. Raised an eyebrow at most.

FishingInTheRiversOfLife · 06/04/2026 10:57

People are chastised and even bullied if they say they don't like dogs. So when you are asked face to face, people are reluctant to state that they don't like dogs. When I have spoken up about not liking dogs, I often get a response of relief and people say they don't like them either but go along with it soas to not upset people.

Certainly there’s an element in any data collection of people saying the socially acceptable answer. By the same logic, it’s possible that you stating you don’t like dogs causes the same social pressure and people feel inclined to agree with you, even if they don’t mean it.

YouGov and similar polls are usually done online, sometimes on the phone, which minimises that face to face pressure you describe.

We were sat in a cafe and a dog came in with its owner, ran up to my daughter, jumped up at her and scratched her leg.
I said, “Hey, get away,” to it. Owner gives me a dirty look and said,”Oh, don’t you like dogs?”
I DO NOT like dogs. Mainly due to so many negative interactions with them running up and barking to me and my kids.
When the kids were smaller we were having a picnic in a park and a dog ran over and snatched a sandwich out of my daughter’s hand. It was terrifying, the dog was much bigger than she was.

Yesterday we were out walking and a dog came running right up to us. It put its snot/drool on my trousers. It’s not okay. Dog owner said it was just being friendly.

Dog owners should have their dogs on leads in public places.
Dog owners should not let them wee on other people’s gardens or in town centres etc.
Dog owners should consider the climate emergency before getting a dog (unless an assistance or working dog is needed). They are a luxury our planet cannot afford.
Dog owners should not let their dogs run up to other people.

What bizarre so-called logic. It's the potential presence of dog shit in a food establishment at all that is the issue. If you have no problem with the idea of dog shit residue on a cafe floor, and the potential smell from it while you're eating, you knock yourself out. Some of us don't like that kind of thing, but hey what does that matter so long as doggy gets to go everywhere, eh?

And before you try to say it doesn't happen, I've experienced it and I strongly doubt I'm the only one who has.

Are you sure that it came from a dog’s behind and not someone’s shoe though? Far more shoes than dogs in any establishment, and dogs tend not to shit on themselves.

YouGov conduct their research online? People can be as honest as they want without the fear of being bullied or judged

I was called a psychopath for saying I would rescue my dog instead of a stranger's baby from a burning building. The poster was getting really personal about it. They could not answer why they would not be near their own baby and not able to rescue themselves. A lot of anger and attacks over an impossible and hypothetical situation.

I have PMs disabled because of people like that.

Dogs bums don't have shit on them after they've had a poo!

Indeed. I liken it to smoking. My mother complained to establishments all the time about smoking. I like to credit her with being part of the movement that helped ban it in indoor buildings - these were the days where people could smoke on planes and in the cinema, as well as in restaurants - restaurants would 'divide' the restaurant in half and have smokers on one side, but of course the stench would waft over. I am hopeful the same will happen to dogs in cafes.

The self importance! Smoking was banned because decades of research showed second hand smoke is dangerous, not because people didn’t like it.

Anyone is free to dislike anything, and to vote with their feet. Note that the thread has been taken over by people who think their likes and dislikes mean they are morally superior. And note that most of them are on the non-dog side of the debate!

No, it hadn't shat on itself, but it had visible shit around its backside so had clearly been brought in straight from taking a dump.

What on earth are you talking about? Sometimes they do! - e.g. when they have upset stomachs and have passed a loose motion. If you're never encountered it, you're - well, quite lucky actually. As a former dog owner I can tell you I definitely have.

Where are all these slobbery dogs? Most breeds don't slobber for a start and I have never seen a dog in any eating place putting its face on a table and I eat in dog friendly places a few times a week.

Just out of interest I counted up how many coffee shops/cafes there are in my local town and there are 16. Only 6 of them are dog friendly so plenty of places for the non dog lovers to go

Yes slobbery dogs occur a lot on MN, weird!

If a dog if fed decent food it should not have an upset stomach very often. Maybe once a year, if that, our previous dogs had an upset stomach. Our present dog who we have had just about a year has not had an upset stomach in that time

Very weird. I must admit that even as a massive dog lover I could never have a dog that slobbered. Not many breeds slobber though

WhatNoRaisins · 06/04/2026 12:09

Dogs seem to like licking stuff in my experience as well as stuff like bumhole sniffing. Nothing wrong with that, it's how dogs like to socialise but I'd rather be kept out of it and have dogs faces and slobber away from me and my stuff as I'm not a dog and have different preferences.

Oh yeah second hand dog ownership is definitely as unhealthy as second hand smoking.

I mean it’s a really well know carcinogenic just like cigarettes.
