AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 03:07

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Dogs that bite need to be put to sleep. Please find the owner and report to the police.

I have reported it. It bit my child. I know who the owner is. It has bitten before. More than once. I think the dog was on it's final warning.

Well thankfully one badly behaved dog doesn’t get to speak for all- same as badly behaved children.

And the drawing blood through clothes and footwear?

Francestein · 05/04/2026 04:21

The sooner people realise that dogs aren’t handbags and do not have the same emotions, thought processes and feelings as people the better. At the moment, I feel like dogs AND their owners need muzzling. (I am a dog owner and all of my dogs have been raised to be confident on their own at home. I don’t demand that everyone else in the world to find them as adorable as I do. )

TeeBee · 05/04/2026 04:22

I don’t want dogs in cafes full stop…and I have one. I din’t want animals around where I’m eating and they’re annoying. Any dog nipping people should be muzzled.

CK13v · 05/04/2026 04:25

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 04:06

So have you reported it to the police

Of course. I don't have or engage with social media. Whatever that is.
I just do mumsnet and basic messaging if I need to.

Facebook? Instagram? I know the words but it's way beyond what I can commit any time to. I'm a very busy woman in real life. I have lots of demands on my time.

But you seem able to start threads at 3am.

I’d have thought somebody as busy as you would be tucked up fast asleep.

I sense bt.

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 04:30

I think only on mn do people hate dogs though, it’s not been my reality. Always had dogs and people have always insisted on touching them even when asked

Well fancy. There must be two different sorts of people here then.
I do NOT hate dogs. I really don't mind dogs in their place.

Cafes and restaurants are not their place at all. I don't understand why dog owners don't understand that. People relaxing and eating do not want smelly dogs around them. And however much dog owners are in denial about the stench dogs emit, you are used to it so you don't notice it.

We smell you a mile off. Really. Dogs are smelly.

Dogs are very popular in Australia but legally they’re not permitted in indoor spaces where food is being prepared or served. They can be taken to outdoor spaces at the owner’s discretion (the cafe owner not the dog owner!) I think it’s a good balance - dogs can be taken out with you but people who don’t want to be around dogs have that option too.

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 04:36

But you seem able to start threads at 3am

Maybe I have a sick child who I have to watch over and not fall asleep.
Maybe I don't want to be awake at 3am but I have little choice.

Had you thought of that? Of course not. I don't blame you for that judgement.
How could you know?

And the drawing blood through clothes and footwear

Why would you assume it was through footwear? Or clothes actually, the child may have been in cropped trousers, a skirt or shorts.

In any event, I was bitten through (linen) trousers and it drew blood. I had to have a rabies vaccination after it so it made a impression! This was a stray so nothing to do with the OP's scenario in any other way but just wanted to point out you haven't found a suspicious inconsistency here at all!

hattie43 · 05/04/2026 04:44

i love seeing dogs out and about . I have been to many cafes with dogs sitting quietly . Your incident sounds unusual.

Thechateau · 05/04/2026 04:45

I agree OP. I quite like dogs but am sick of them in cafes. Was in Oret yesterday with a dog with a very piercing bark, it's fucking annoying

EmeraldShamrock000 · 05/04/2026 04:45

I don't like this new pet friendly service. I love animals but not around food.

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 04:46

It was through leggings as it happens. Dgc was wearing a skirt and leggings,
Bite still punctured her skin

Hate dogs in cafes. I was in a park cafe earlier in the week and had to fend offf two rank mutts from going for my 4 y olds sausage roll. Useless owners. I had to literally slap ones face away with my phone as it was trying to force its slimey snout onto our table.

Onthemaintrunkline · 05/04/2026 05:00

I don’t think dogs should be in any sort of eatery. Why some people persist with this ‘love me, love my dog’ rubbish heaven knows. We don’t necessarily love you and we most definitely do not love your mutt. Unless of course if it’s a seeing eye dog or similar.

freckledsloth · 05/04/2026 05:04

Definitely not being unreasonable. I’m also sick of it. Hope your GC is alright, not a nice experience for her.

See, this is our experience of ridiculous owners. They ruin a nice day out.
There are some very well behaved dogs with considerate owners. But few and far between You just have to ban the lot of them. I wish

I wish I wish I wish that dogs will be banned from all public places.

I have dogs in my life that I I love .I spend time with them
Walk with them through fields and valleys and streams where they get ridiculously wet and excited. They have a great life.

Never taken them into cafe though. Not a place for dogs.

Are you a man? Only a man would ask that question after the information I gave.

I am sorry about your granddaughter. I hope she is ok. I hope that dog gets put down especially if this is not the first incident.

I was in a restaurant yesterday with a friend and his new gf. Massive stinky dog came in. I didn't want to make a scene as I was meeting my friend's gf for the first time, but it put me right off my food, it smelled soooo bad. Luckily the owner was just waiting for a takeaway so she was out within 15 minutes, but it really marred my dining experience. I am so very sick of dogs in eating places, dogs in shops, malls etc. Sick of dogs full stop. I agree the tide is turning.

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 05:24

Why can’t you fall asleep?

Because my daughter might have yet another epileptic event and I need to be awake so I can ring for an ambulance.

Interested as to how a passing snap at an ankle drew blood over clothing and footwear.

My two year old was snapped at over leggings and socks by a small dog and it drew blood on her foot perfectly possible

Same old boring argument re dogs and children. It really doesn't compare. Dogs do not need nor want to be dragged around busy shopping centres, indoor too, clothes shops cafes pubs restaurants. There is just no need. The amount of worried anxious dogs I see in crowded places is ridiculous.

Its more about the owner than any need for the animal. And I love dogs

I was confused by people not believing this too. I was bitten by a dog ina park a couple of years ago. A small yappy thing which had no size to it at all, I think it was a cockapoo or something similar.

i was out for a walk when it ran up, off lead obviously, and bit me completely unprompted. I shook it off quickly and it was only one short nip/bite but that ruined a thick pair of jeans and broke the skin on my calf. I also needed antibiotics and a rabies jab.

I absolutely am a dog hater. I have never been a fan but the last few years have made me less and less tolerant of the smelly mutts and their indulgent owners. The owner of the dog that bit me had the nerve to be irritated with me and told me as I was heading for A&E that it was just being friendly.

Oh well, nothing more you can do then. Maybe the owner will think twice now. Dogs in cafes are here to stay. Most are well behaved

The reason people hate dogs is because of negative interactions
personally I’ve had numerous bad interactions with dogs
picnic ruined when a dog run all over it
dogs in cafes smelling and barking
dogs just coming to say hello I don’t want them anywhere near me or to say hello

a dog jumped up at my toddler in his buggy apparently I was the bad guy because I kicked out of the way
