AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 03:07

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

They need to be muzzled when out in highly populated places. I was badly bitten by a dog tied up outside a supermarket. I just went to get a trolley and this small dog went beserk.
It was clearly not socialised and why tie it up right next to the trolley park on a long lead. I could have been a small child or toddler.

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 05/04/2026 03:18

No way. I love dogs and seeing them when I’m out and about.

Ponoka7 · 05/04/2026 03:19

So have you reported it to the police? Put ut on social media? Someone must know the owner. What has been the cafe owners response?
I'm sick of every bit of grass being turned into a dog's toilet, but unfortunately it's another part of the anti social behaviour that is on the rise.

CK13v · 05/04/2026 03:23

Yabu I love seeing them too and have never had an aggressive experience. The vast majority are not aggressive- same as humans.

ILoveDaffodills · 05/04/2026 03:26

I'm very sorry about your granddaughter & the distress it has caused you. Is there any CCTV in the cafe?

however, cafes are a business & are entitied to run them to make a profit & if dog owners are the ones spending the money that's who they're going to cater to IF people objecting to dogs being there were the majority, that's what they'd go with.

DrJump · 05/04/2026 03:27

I really like dogs. But my God why do people insist on bringing them everywhere. Hate it.

I agree.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 05/04/2026 03:27

Someone will come on here and say that your grand daughter must have done something or they prefer dogs to children but I would like all dogs banned from restaurants because they are animals and it is dangerous and a lot of people are delusional about their ability to train and care for dogs.

Me too.

Glitchymn1 · 05/04/2026 03:28

I think only on mn do people hate dogs though, it’s not been my reality. Always had dogs and people have always insisted on touching them even when asked not to.

Devilsmommy · 05/04/2026 03:31

I don't think they should be in places where people are eating anyway. It's rank. I don't want to smell that horrible dog smell when I'm eating thanks 🤮

littleblackdress26 · 05/04/2026 03:33

Yup it's dirty and hygienic if I walked into a cafe and saw dogs i'd leave. Why does the dog need to come in ? I've seen a dog in a trolley in marks and Spencers and another dog taking a poo in
H &M . Leave the dog at home or outside
Unfortunately people seem to lose their minds when it comes to dogs and it takes incidents like these before something is done .However I bet nothing will change .

Freedomsjustanotherword · 05/04/2026 03:45

Cafes should be dog free for hygiene and safety reasons alone. This was a particularly shitty dog owner, to scraper because their hound bit a child.

It happens so often. A dog is a personal choice. You choose to have a dog then sort out your dog, Don't bring it to a cafe or a supermarket where the vast majority don't want it. It's your dog and you love it. Nobody else does.
To others it's just a nuisance. A really major fucking nuisance. That's how we see you.

And yeah. The cafes let you in at the moment But the tide is turning

Bloody dogs everywhere. Shopping centres, supermarkets, high street, cafes. I went to a nice restaurant for birthday lunch a few weeks ago and someone brought their massive dog in “oh you don’t mind do you?” I do, as it happens. It’s definitely a post-Covid thing. I’m sick of tripping over them and their long leads everywhere I go

KeepYaHeadUp · 05/04/2026 03:50

Oh, and I love dogs and have owned dogs. I love a dog in a pub, on a walk, etc. but not everywhere I go because people don’t feel able to leave them alone for short periods of time

It really isn’t.

It’s up to cafes and restaurants. They own establishments and make the decisions. Footfall is down and falling with the sector as a whole is struggling due to col and rising prices, dog owners bring good reliable revenue. They’re being increasingly encouraged for good reason.

Zanatdy · 05/04/2026 03:56

Well it’s not going to happen is it, cafe’s won’t stop letting in dogs because your grandchild was bitten. Assume the dog was startled, maybe asleep and bit out of fear. But that dog shouldn’t be in cafe’s if they can react like that. I have a dog, but I don’t take him everywhere with me. He is quite anxious, so he would be on edge and that’s when incidents could happen. So I keep him away from busy environments. Plus I want to enjoy the meal / drink that i’m paying for and not eat one handed with an eye on the door.

He is perfectly happy to stay home alone, but we have a whole nation of dogs who have separation anxiety as owners didn’t get them used to staying home alone during lockdowns. Hence we have dogs everywhere now, even more so.

Chigreenen · 05/04/2026 04:03

Dogs that bite need to be put to sleep. Please find the owner and report to the police.

CK13v · 05/04/2026 04:04

Interested as to how a passing snap at an ankle drew blood over clothing and footwear.

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 04:06

So have you reported it to the police

Of course. I don't have or engage with social media. Whatever that is.
I just do mumsnet and basic messaging if I need to.

Facebook? Instagram? I know the words but it's way beyond what I can commit any time to. I'm a very busy woman in real life. I have lots of demands on my time.

Police won’t be interested without the dog identified.

I have reported it. It bit my child. I know who the owner is. It has bitten before. More than once. I think the dog was on it's final warning.

Couldn’t agree more we went to a cafe had to leave as one came in that stunk ( as most do)

another time went for pub lunch it cost over £160 for 4 of us bit of a treat there were 2 dogs in there one barked all the time and the other kept wondering round because as the entitled twat of an owner said it just wants to say hello

Absolutely ridiculous that it gets a final warning should be put down on the first warning
