AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

I agree OP. I’m a dog owner and lover but they don’t need to be in cafes.
An outdoor space designed for dogs is fine, but not indoors.

I am sure the dog haters would object if the outdoor areas of cafes were reserved for dog owners too. Especially in nice weather.

LoneCar · 05/04/2026 07:23

Good dog owners train their dogs so they can stay at home alone for a while, and don’t need to be dragged around small cafes and John Lewis. (A country pub after a walk is fine for well-trained dogs of course). Unfortunately a significant number of dog owners are entitled and rude and antisocial so their dogs behave like pests too.

People should not have to ‘check first’ before going shopping or to a cafe or restaurant. It seems to be the case that dogs are taking priority over humans and restricting the choices of people who don’t want to be around them.

In this day and age where dogs are allowed in certain establishments it is very much up to you to check first. There are plenty of eating establishments where dogs are not allowed. Do your research

Charlize43 · 05/04/2026 07:23

It's only a matter of time now before we start finding them in changing rooms.

You're trying to cram your flesh into a cocktail dress two sizes too small while your ankles are getting nipped and some bloke is staring at your tits!

When will this madness end?!

Londonrach1 · 05/04/2026 07:24

Dog needs reporting. Hope your grandchild is ok

I suppose there’s always someone who is going to be unhappy, but it’s a decent compromise for establishments to make.

Tiddlywinks63 · 05/04/2026 07:29

We have two dogs, never would I take them inside a cafe or pub. We would sit outside and if it was crowded not stop at all.

Almondsundae · 05/04/2026 07:30

It’s all very well saying people should ‘pick another cafe’ but when you’re in an area with not many yet all are dog friendly what are you meant to do ?!

My DSD keeps asking to bring his puppy to our house every week and I won’t allow it as I’m allergic and it’s causing so many issues. I’m shocked that so may people think dogs should be everywhere cafes, shopping centres etc or other peoples homes when they’ve said no (dh ex thinks I’m crue!)

MyDeftDuck · 05/04/2026 07:30

DrJump · 05/04/2026 03:27

I really like dogs. But my God why do people insist on bringing them everywhere. Hate it.

This
And WHY do dog owners insist on picking up their dogs and then lunge them at other people claiming the dog wants a kiss!?! FFS!

Well they should as it’s up to owners of establishments, many of whom need the custom of dog owners and would close without it.

Absolute rubbish! I’ve never ever experienced this and actually whenever we’re anywhere with our dog we’re approached by people asking for a stroke. Sometimes we have to ask people not to fuss over her!

DonewhatIcando · 05/04/2026 07:35

@OhSoTrue
100% agree with you.
I was in Primark on Good Friday and a dog lunged at me IN PRIMARK! Totally took me by surprise, I pinwheeled backwards and nearly lost my balance, who takes a dog into Primark???
Owner kinda did a "what can you do" shrug, i was like "dont bring your dog into primark"
I like dogs, I have a dog, a very old small terrier type, snappy little arsehole, I love her but she's still an arsehole.
I don't take my dog into shops, cafes, bars etc.
I hope your dgd is OK, being bitten is awful 😖

They need to be muzzled when out in highly populated places. I was badly bitten by a dog tied up outside a supermarket. I just went to get a trolley and this small dog went beserk

It happens so often. A dog is a personal choice. You choose to have a dog then sort out your dog, Don't bring it to a cafe or a supermarket where the vast majority don't want it. It's your dog and you love it. Nobody else does.
To others it's just a nuisance. A really major fucking nuisance. That's how we see you.

And yeah. The cafes let you in at the moment But the tide is turning

It's also personal choice as to whether you go in the cafe or not. There are ones that take dogs and ones that don't.
As a dog owner, I frequent both. I have a spaniel and the only thing they'd do with a child is see if they can scrounge some cake. But, I would never trust my dog or any others. She sits under the table and we've frequently been told people never knew she was there until we'd gone.
Conversely as a dog owner, I've watched people let their toddlers come and hit her on the head, pull her tail, try and sit on her. So, it works both ways 🤷

ThatGoldLeader · 05/04/2026 07:35

YANBU. The hair salon I frequent now has a bloody dog running around it too 🤦‍♀️.

WhatNoRaisins · 05/04/2026 07:37

I was thinking about this again now that even the bloody supermarket cafe near me allows dogs. Now all our local options allow dogs. This supermarket one isn't very big and it's only a matter of time before I trip over or tread on a dog.

Almondsundae · 05/04/2026 07:38

It’s the dog smell too it’s disgusting when you want to eat or drink in a cafe it’s so off putting.

I think there are two types of dog owners. Ones who put the dogs first and take them to appropriate outdoor places and ones who think a dog has to fit in with their lives and go to human places like cafes and shops etc and they don’t put in as much effort with training (hence the ‘my dog can’t be left alone’ excuses when actually you should crate train or train them to be left for short periods )

Melsy88 · 05/04/2026 07:39

I think there should be a blanket rule everywhere that if you disrupt other customers for whatever reason you should leave. That includes dogs barking, children shouting, etc.
We have 2 local pubs. One allows dogs but no children and the other allows children but no dogs. I choose the one that allows dogs every time as it's SO much more peaceful

Boomer55 · 05/04/2026 07:40

I don’t particularly like Wetherspoons, but they say their business has increased since they banned dogs both inside and outside of their pubs, because they were such a nuisance. 🤷‍♀️

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 05/04/2026 07:41

I love dogs, so not massively worried, although I wouldn’t approach one, unless I had asked the owner. I appreciate your granddaughter hadn’t, and I’m sorry that that happened, how
frightening for her. There are always going to be a responsible owners, just like there are irresponsible parents.

Not comparing the the two things by the way, but just meaning that there’s always going to be people in public who behave badly.

Personally, my dogs go to the pub, but I wouldn’t take them to place where there are kids running around, or to a café. It just doesn’t seem like the right environment for them, but I definitely wouldn’t want to live in a world where dogs were Overly policed.

Delighted recently to hear that several beaches where there was going to be a Dog ban have decided against it. Because they recognise how important dogs are and owners to the local economy.

So unfortunately, I’m team Dog, although I’m not team irresponsible owner.

CK13v · 05/04/2026 04:04

Interested as to how a passing snap at an ankle drew blood over clothing and footwear.

Seriously?

One of my DSs often wears shorts and no socks, just his well work trainers. I’ve seen plenty of kids out and about in crocs.

The dog bit a child. OP is right to broadcast her concerns. Hopefully the stupid owner will keep the dog at home next time.

That wouldn’t be possible to ban noisy children for example in case it’s due to SEN

supersop60 · 05/04/2026 07:42

Im a dog owner and I agree with OP. Dog owning is a choice that shouldn’t be inflicted on other people. I was out last night at a noisy bar (DJ) and a young woman had her little cavapoo with her. I worry for its hearing.

Edited

I fall into neither of those categories, my dog goes for a long walk then we may have coffee, is well trained and calm. She can also be left alone for a fairly long amount of time, not destructive or anything.

This is what concerns me surely cafes, shops, bars etc are not any fun for the dogs ?

HairyToity · 05/04/2026 07:44

My dog is nice natured and never bitten. If she was snappy I wouldn't take her into a cafe. I think owners need to know their dogs limits.
