AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 03:07

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

They need to be muzzled when out in highly populated places. I was badly bitten by a dog tied up outside a supermarket. I just went to get a trolley and this small dog went beserk

It happens so often. A dog is a personal choice. You choose to have a dog then sort out your dog, Don't bring it to a cafe or a supermarket where the vast majority don't want it. It's your dog and you love it. Nobody else does.
To others it's just a nuisance. A really major fucking nuisance. That's how we see you.

And yeah. The cafes let you in at the moment But the tide is turning

I don’t think it’s the case that the vast majority don’t want it.

It’s a personal choice for you to enter a dog friendly cafe.

I think only on mn do people hate dogs though, it’s not been my reality. Always had dogs and people have always insisted on touching them even when asked

Well fancy. There must be two different sorts of people here then.
I do NOT hate dogs. I really don't mind dogs in their place.

Cafes and restaurants are not their place at all. I don't understand why dog owners don't understand that. People relaxing and eating do not want smelly dogs around them. And however much dog owners are in denial about the stench dogs emit, you are used to it so you don't notice it.

We smell you a mile off. Really. Dogs are smelly.

Why not choose a cafe that doesn’t allow dogs?

Where are these supermarkets that allow dogs in ? I've never seen any.

Who is the "we" you are talking about? When were you appointed the spokesperson for these people?

The cafes let you in at the moment But the tide is turning

Again, where are all these "dog friendly" cafes you mention? I've not seen any 🙄

DallazMajor · 05/04/2026 06:09

Some dog owners are often as bad if not worse than the “not all men” brigade.

I have a dog. He’s an annoyance when out and about. He just about gets away with it because he’s very cute looking.

Houndsahollering · 05/04/2026 06:14

I own dogs. I adore my dogs. I have no problem with dogs being in public places (cafes/pubs) BUT
I absolutely cannot stand owners who do shit like this - take dogs into spaces where they KNOW their dog will be uncomfortable and react.

if you want to take your dog to a cafe for example, it needs to be able to settle, and sit calmly minding its own business by or under your table and ignore absolutely everyone coming and going. I don’t want your dog coming over begging while I’m trying to enjoy my food ffs!

Unfortunately there is a growing majority of people who own dogs who quite frankly should have got a soft toy instead. They are lazy when it comes to training, and they ignore their dogs obvious discomfort because they’re idiots.

One of mine is a recovering reactive and we have worked our absolute arses off with him. I still would never take either of mine into a “dog friendly” cafe or pub because quite frankly it would be too stressful for them. It’s unfair on them and unfair on everyone else around.

I was confused by people not believing this too. I was bitten by a dog ina park a couple of years ago. A small yappy thing which had no size to it at all, I think it was a cockapoo or something similar.

i was out for a walk when it ran up, off lead obviously, and bit me completely unprompted. I shook it off quickly and it was only one short nip/bite but that ruined a thick pair of jeans and broke the skin on my calf. I also needed antibiotics and a rabies jab.

I absolutely am a dog hater. I have never been a fan but the last few years have made me less and less tolerant of the smelly mutts and their indulgent owners. The owner of the dog that bit me had the nerve to be irritated with me and told me as I was heading for A&E that it was just being friendly.

Are you in the UK? There’s no rabies here.

I live in a coastal town, a tourist area that's busy only during the warmer weather. My closest friend runs a beachfront café. She tells me that dog owners keep her in business. She clearly states that dogs are welcome before you enter.
Very few cafés and pubs don't accept dogs locally, far more than pre-Covid. I presume given the economic climate it's necessary because you wouldn't choose to alienate those who dislike dogs and who'll choose to go elsewhere, especially given that dogs don't spend much...

Charlize43 · 05/04/2026 06:25

All this could be prevented, including the more savage dog attacks that result in a fatality, if it was law that all dogs be muzzled in public.

Hopefully muzzles might also shut them up as there was one on the train that was yap, yap, yap, yap, yap, yap for the duration. The stupid bitch with it had her air pods in and was oblivious as she was staring at her phone. I'm sure she could hear it but was pretending that she couldn't.

I’ve got a dog, she’s well trained and not an annoyance when out and about. She’s also cute.

Not all dogs are the same, which is why signs often say “well behaved dogs welcome”, so mine is.

Passingthrough123 · 05/04/2026 06:27

You said it was your DGD12 who was bitten but then you said it was your child?

Same here! Coastal town lots of holiday makers most have dogs as do the locals, Vast majority of oka ex are dog friendly by popular demand.

Passingthrough123 · 05/04/2026 06:33

I am a dog owner and only take her to places where I know she will sit calmly and is welcome. That doesn’t include cafes that are busy because I know she’ll be a pain to sit still. She’s also a breed everyone adores and I get fed up of unsolicited strokes. So I do understand people get fed up of dogs in public.

If my kid/grandchild got bitten I would be doing everything to track down the owner though.

I think either OP had had a few too many wines when she posted or this is a bot. " I'm a very busy woman in real life". Who speaks like this in real life ?

DHchangingjobs · 05/04/2026 06:34

I hope your grandaughter is ok.

I agree. My 4 year old is petrified of dogs. She physically shakes. She’s never had a bad experience with one. It makes it very difficult going anywhere. We have now taught her to close her eyes if one is approaching. The comment that really annoys me is “they won’t hurt her” it doesn’t matter- she’s still scared

It seems this poster is confused.
Rabies injections are given as a course of 4 spaced out, not a one-off and the poster will have been told that.

She probably means anti-tetanus if she's in UK.

If she's not in UK her post is irrelevant really.

my friends DC were inexplicably scared of dogs, she accessed a charity that dealt with the issue by introducing the children to dogs in a calm way. It sorted their phobia.

I agree.

Most people who are savaged by dogs are bitten by dogs that are known to them.

PermanentTemporary · 05/04/2026 06:39

I don’t think the dogs should be in places like cafes, mainly for the dogs’ sake. It’s obviously daft to think that animals enjoy experiences like that, they are stressful for them at best, as shown by the biting. But good luck trying to turn the tide. At least you reported it in some form.

DHchangingjobs · 05/04/2026 06:40

@BoogieTownTopthanks, I will look into this!
She starts school in September which has a support dog. I’m hoping this will also help her get used to them. A few people have said to get a dog ourselves but I don’t think that would be fair on her or a dog!

So you find my post funny? I don't see why.

I'm in a seaside town and we have very few "dog friendly" cafes because people who come to visit here don't bring their dogs with them.

Where's the joke in that?
