AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 03:07

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Before you call people thick, I’d read the first line of the OP, it says 12 not 2!

This! Also a lot doesn’t ring true.

Apparently the owner “fled the scene” , the next the op knows the owner and the dog (which was apparently on its last chance. ) and has reported them to the police. Not sure why somebody who knows the “ victim” would flee.

Secondly a nip at the ankle though leggings as somebody walked past is unlikely to draw blood..

Op said it was her grandchild then said it was her child….

backagainohdear · 05/04/2026 07:44

Yep I agree with you, it’s the dog smell as well! 🤢 I won’t use any cafe that’s got a dog in its off putting.

Dog owners should be embracing the outdoors life - only sitting in outdoor areas of cafes or alternative being take a flask and find a bench?

Almondsundae · 05/04/2026 07:47

Lots of people have allergies too it seems very unfair on them if everywhere now allows dogs

That wouldn’t be possible to ban noisy children for example in case it’s due to SEN

Of course you could. SENs aren’t protected, disabilities and are easily documented.

Noisy disruptive children and dogs should absolutely be asked to leave.

The vast majority of dogs I see in cafes are superbly behaved- not so children .

I’m wondering if the owner was also sitting alone on a table for four…..

If you know, you know 🤣

I think only on mn do people hate dogs though, it’s not been my reality. Always had dogs and people have always insisted on touching them even when asked not to.

I don't hate dogs and don't touch dogs that I don't know well. I was still bitten from behind when I was out walking with my baby. I didn't even know the dog was there until it ripped my trousers and drew blood from my leg. The owner was very apologetic but claimed "it's normally such a good dog near children". Thankfully I was carrying my 3 month old in a papoose, otherwise I shudder to think what might have happened.

Devilsmommy · 05/04/2026 03:31

I don't think they should be in places where people are eating anyway. It's rank. I don't want to smell that horrible dog smell when I'm eating thanks 🤮

Same. I do like dogs but they are animals and probably don't want to be in a cafe/restaurant/shop anyway. I do hate the way people humanise their dogs these days. I have a horse -would it be ok for me to bring her along to the cafe next time I want a full English?

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 05/04/2026 03:18

No way. I love dogs and seeing them when I’m out and about.

Do you mind getting a bite or two if it happens?

MaryBeardsShoes · 05/04/2026 07:49

YANBU to say dogs should not be inside cafes. As dog owners we always sit outside.

YABU in the way you think you get to speak for everyone and the way you are speaking to everyone. You are being aggressive and rude and that won’t help your argument.

This
And WHY do dog owners insist on picking up their dogs and then lunge them at other people claiming the dog wants a kiss!?! FFS!

Sorry but you’ve jumped the shark with this comment.

Perfect28 · 05/04/2026 07:50

Totally sick of dogs. Can't take my kid to throw a ball in the park as the ball will be taken by a dog, can't ride a bike without being chased by a dog. Can't visit anywhere inside 'dog friendly' (most places now) without very allergic and asthmatic family members having horrible reactions. I absolutely hate dogs jumping up on me and the owners just shout ' oh don't worry she's friendly'. I'm so over dogs, dog owners please get the message!

It doesn’t happen though. It’s hugely rare. Only somebody that didn’t want to end up in trouble with the police would take a dangerous dog to a cafe.

Umbrellasinthesunshine · 05/04/2026 07:50

Yep, I like dogs but absolutely fed up with them in places they don’t belong. The barking and lunging at people just shows they’re uncomfortable too. I can hardly imagine being crammed under a table in a busy noisy cafe is relaxing or enjoyable for them, hence they behave poorly. But because they’ve not been properly trained they “can’t be left”.
Last summer a dog on a long lead in a cafe jumped up onto our table and took the bacon off my son’s plate! The owner did look embarrassed, but also got huffy when I asked them to pay to replace the meal! Imagine if a child had run up and done that to their plate - they would have been incensed, with calls to “control your child”! In a pub, I was walking past the bar and a large dog who “was being friendly” jumped up on me and left muddy paw prints all over my trousers. I was out for a family birthday meal and ended up filthy and fed up. The owners always have this slightly indulgent smile, as though we’re all so utterly charmed we wouldn’t mind having our meal / clothes spoiled. We do mind.

I thought things such as autism were protected by disability discrimination laws ? Not sure about other SEN but I didn’t think it was allowed (or would be appropriate) to ban children in SEN or suspected SEN circumstances

Blueberryme · 05/04/2026 07:53

I love dogs and used to own them but I don’t like them in places where food is being served, unless they use outdoor seating areas.

However, what I find really objectionable is the number of times recently that I see owners allowing their dogs to sit on cafe seats (no rug underneath). Other people have to then sit on that seat where your dog has likely shed fur and dander, let alone whether it had muddy paws or a not-so-clean backside. If cafes/restaurants allow dogs then I wish the managers would nip this entitled behaviour in the bud.

Rileysp · 05/04/2026 07:53

I have no issues with dogs being outside. But being inside isn’t really ok for me. Folk with allergies, hygiene issues etc.

i hope the girl recovers and isn’t too scarred by it

Any dog can bite, you don't know what might set them off. They might get startled or smell something or hear something or whatever. Just saying 'it's rare' isn't really good enough.

We’ve noticed in our area that there’s so much dog poo everywhere too. On very hot days in summer the park stinks as it has just all been warmed up we were so disgusted last year . Can’t even have a picnic as you can’t find a clean area of grass

Yes that’s disgusting I agree

ChatOff · 05/04/2026 07:56

I'm not the right person to ask because I'd have dogs everywhere and ban children and cats.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid biting someone

and SEN issues are clearly a disability and are covered by disability law

DHchangingjobs · 05/04/2026 06:34

I hope your grandaughter is ok.

I agree. My 4 year old is petrified of dogs. She physically shakes. She’s never had a bad experience with one. It makes it very difficult going anywhere. We have now taught her to close her eyes if one is approaching. The comment that really annoys me is “they won’t hurt her” it doesn’t matter- she’s still scared

This is the worst thing you can do with your child, because you are reinforcing her terror when you make her close her eyes. Ask around to find someone who has a dog that is great with children and do a slow introduction over a few meetings - i.e, first at a distance, then closer.
