Is it safe to visit The US?

niknak1234 · 02/04/2026 16:59

Over the last few months I have seen a lot of is it safe to travel to The US threads, and a lot of replies of "I wouldn't chance it."

Why do people really think is going to happen at the most popular tourist destinations?

Strip searched at JFK airport because you posted you didn't like Trump on Mumsnet? Shot by ICE at The Magic Kingdom whilst queueing up to meet Chip n Dale? Deported to Caracas whilst watching Lion King on Broadway?

This is ridiculous. You aren’t prevented from caretaker jobs based on accusations, you have to have a conviction.

A civil suit found his actions to be tantamount to rape.

He also has a bunch of convictions for falsifying business records after he paid a woman off. That dishonesty would be enough to bar him from working at a school.

He also got indicted under the Espionage Act and for obstructing justice. The judge in that case just happened to be a notoriously corrupt one he appointed who dragged the case out long enough for him to regain control of the DoJ and drop it.

Then there were more charges for inciting an insurrection and for attempting to tamper with an election. His lawyers again dragged that out long enough to get his own DoJ to abandon it.

It's like trying to get charges to stick on a Mafia Don.

Has anyone actually heard of a case of anyone’s social media being checked at the airport, let alone being refused entry because of a critical post about Trump? As I recall, all this stems from one fella who was some sort of self-proclaimed agitator who was outspoken about the US and was on a watchlist anyway. I have not heard of any other travellers being stopped for this reason at all.

Yes, my son's Canadian friend was taken into a room at a US airport, told to list all his social media account names and to open his devices. Held for hours and then allowed to leave.

I think the biggest risk is the damage to your personal morals if you think it is acceptable to go to America on holiday.

I appreciate people might have no option if it is a work trip or it is to see family but to go there from choice for fun is utterly wrong in my opinion.

@YankSplaininghow much did you pay for the crème egg?

They come in a packet of four for $4.99 in my local Walmart. They will go on sale tomorrow, and on Monday they'll be even cheaper.

Can't speak for YankSplaining's local price.

I hope you have the visit you deserve.

What an absolutely ludicrous thing to write - what does it say about someone’s morals if they think it acceptable to visit the UK?

How do you think the rest of the world views the systemic coverup of Pakistani grooming gangs?

The crack down on freedom of expression via recording of non crime hate incidents?
the targeting and firing of female academics who dared define women as a biological reality, the erosion of women’s rights and spaces?

David Lammy’s proposal to radically restrict jury trials, an erosion of a fundamental democratic and constitutional safeguard which has been the cornerstone of the UK’s adversarial justice system since the Magna Carta?

Peter Mandelson sharing sensitive government information with Epstein, arranging for Epstein’s goddaughter to be given a tour of No 10 while Epstein was in prison!

I’m not American (in fact I live in a commonwealth country) but to pretend the US is an outlier and somehow beyond the pale is ridiculous.

DrunkOnYourVine · 04/04/2026 02:38

We have been to the US many times and lived there for a few years. We went last year and will be going again this summer to see friends and do a road trip. We have visited many states over the years and have found the people very friendly on the whole, definitely friendlier than the UK.

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 04/04/2026 02:57

I was stopped for hours at JFK airport, only for a few hours but for literally no reason (I had my esta, I've never been arrested or had anything on my record other than a speeding ticket, never posted anti trump things on sm, I'm just a normal white, middle class lady - not that it should change anything). It was scary, and whilst I think it was more of a random stop and check, nobody told me anything and I was basically frog marched to a small room and left there for an hour, my friend had gone to baggage collection and knew nothing about it, as far as she was concerned i had vanished. After an hour someone took my fingerprints, asked me some questions, then they left me again, another hour passed and they let me go. No explanation, no apology. My main issue is just how dismissive and rude the border control guys are in parts of the US and that theyre politically and financially motivated to stop and remove (they get a bonus).
We aren't going again, I don't want to support that type of politics and it's not pleasant. The comments being made against the UK are deliberately untrue, there are statements made about us, our cities and our political leaders that are really offensive. My husband goes for work often, he can't avoid it, and youre right - i dont believe he will be randomly dragged off by ICE but he has had to ignore situations he would intervene in at home because of the culture and potential for risk (racist shouts at other people, aggresive policing, checking racial minorities Id even at clearly professional events, where at home he would step forward and calm everyone down, he feels he cannot there). There's just nicer, happier, calmer places to go that I'd rather holiday. Each to their own, you can go wherever you like and its none of anyone else's business, but its naive to not understand other people's perspective or to negate other people's experiences. We are in thailand and feel much safer and much more welcome than we did in the US and haven't seen a single gun and nobody has randomly stopped us or shouted at us.

Why? I mean there are sooooo many reasons why he isn’t, unless you’re on a wind up?

I don't think it's a real post. Just sh**t stirring

Tourists visited Germany right up to 1940. Some people have absolutely no integrity

I don't see the UK doing Vladimir Putin's bidding for him. Nor are brown people in the UK being rounded up by masked thugs, with anyone who objects being executed in the street.

"But jury trials..." you realise that most countries only use jury trials for the most serious crimes, just like the UK plans to?

As for Mandelson, you realise that he's been sacked, right? Whereas Trump is very much still in office.

Caplin · 04/04/2026 11:17

We went last year to California and Hawaii (booked before Trump). I enjoyed San Francisco but we were staying in a bit where all the homeless and fentanyl people hung out and that was unnerving. Although we figured they couldn’t do anything to us as they were zombiefied. But it was grim, human excrement on the pavement etc. it was ok once we got closer to the bay.

We love visiting the states and used to go most years. We were meant to be at Disney this year but decided to go to Jamaica instead. I just don’t want to go spend my money in a country that is treating us like crap.

Also I know of a couple of people who married American's and have green cards. Their renewals have been out on hold indefinitely so they can’t leave the country as they may not be let back in, and they have kids and poorly relatives. They have missed funerals, family celebrations etc because they are stuck in limbo.

My H also got pulled up once at JFK, he is white but for some reason they thought he was involved with Iraqi terror…..luckily the system was just screwed up and the policeman took one look and knew he was fine, but it was a scary half hour. Would dread to think what would have happened if he had been Asian or Arab. We were flagged for enhanced security for the rest of the trip which was a total ballache as we had several internal flights and got flagged every time.

So basically, not in a rush to go back until Trump is gone and they start being less of an asshole to the rest of the world.

Yes, well, not taking in actual information is a required factor in being pro-Trump.

🤣🤣🤣

The US is expected to lose 12.5 billion dollars in tourism - hardly an insignificant sum!

Totally agree. Projections are saying minimum that and possibly as high as £30billion.

Here is just a small example of how Canadians feel about the tariffs and how it has affected the US. Bearing in mind that the US’s largest export of alcohol is to Canada…..

The impact on American producers has been severe, with losses measured in hundreds of millions of dollars:

  • Total Spirits Export Collapse: U.S. spirits exports to Canada plummeted by 85% in the second quarter of 2025. For the period between March and December 2025, exports fell from $203 million in 2024 to just $60 million in 2025—a 70% year-over-year decline.
  • Wine Industry Deficit: U.S. wine exports dropped by approximately $428 million (33.5%) in 2025. Canada, previously the largest market for American wine, accounted for the bulk of this loss, with exports to the country falling by $343 million (a 77.7% drop).
  • Specific Brand Hits:
  • Brown-Forman (Jack Daniel's):Reported a 59% to 60% drop in Canadian sales during the first half of its 2026 fiscal year.
  • Phillips Distilling Co.: Saw a 70% decline in Canadian sales, forcing them to move some production to Montreal to bypass the retail ban.
ilikeeggs · 04/04/2026 11:38

I’ve just come back from Atlanta and the only issue we had was at the airport both arriving and leaving as thanks to Trump, the airports are very understaffed due to so many staff not being paid so understandably a lot of them aren’t turning up for work. We had to wait ages to get through passport control when we arrived and we left there was a 3 hour queue to get through security.
We were only there for a convention and only left the hotel once so obviously felt safe in the hotel. I’m not put off going to the US atm and will probably go again this year.

Namechangedasouting987 · 04/04/2026 11:52

My DD is at uni in Canada and her sports team occassionally play US teams in the US.
The land border has got much more intimidating.
Last Aug it took 10 mins
Last month she was held for over an hour.
They were very aggresive, misogynist, and intimidating. As well as armed.
She is 18, white and British, travelling on a Canadian Study Permit and with a valid ESTA (which we know isn't for land borders but does show she is entitled to fly in).
She is going for the day, and with around 30 Canadians.
If the levels of intimidation increase any further she wont be travelling with the team. Even her coach felt unsafe.
It is totally ridiculous.
So no I wouldnt travel to the US.

Namechangedasouting987 · 04/04/2026 11:54

She was also isolated from her team and coach. We told her to pay anything asked. Then her canadian card was declined. The thought of her there alone ia terrifying. God knows what they might ask her to do.

I visited one of the most pro Republican states a month ago and never felt in danger at any point. Women in my 50s, travelling alone.

Or maybe you’re coming at it from a position of privilege? We are a mixed race family and therefore absolutely wouldn’t visit the US whilst a racist with a pack a violent thugs is in charge.

Anyone that says “MSM” in seriousness cannot be taken seriously.

LakieLady · 04/04/2026 12:18

I wouldn't want to go there in any case, because I don't want to give any more of my hard earned cash to the Trump regime than I have to.

Same here. I'd no more visit the US there while he's president than I would have gone to South Africa in the apartheid era.

LakieLady · 04/04/2026 12:45

PinkPonyAnonymous · 03/04/2026 06:15

Their homeland has fallen to fascism. Why would anyone want to visit a fascist state? I will not visit the US in the same way I wouldn’t have visited apartheid South Africa.

Quite. I wouldn't go to a lot of places in the Middle East, either, with their pisspoor human rights record.
