Is it safe to visit The US?

niknak1234 · 02/04/2026 16:59

Over the last few months I have seen a lot of is it safe to travel to The US threads, and a lot of replies of "I wouldn't chance it."

Why do people really think is going to happen at the most popular tourist destinations?

Strip searched at JFK airport because you posted you didn't like Trump on Mumsnet? Shot by ICE at The Magic Kingdom whilst queueing up to meet Chip n Dale? Deported to Caracas whilst watching Lion King on Broadway?

I think he is great.

Why? I mean there are sooooo many reasons why he isn’t, unless you’re on a wind up?

massively restricted

No, not so. There are many states where nothing has changed at all.

Swissmeringue · 03/04/2026 04:47

I'm in California at the minute. It's been as pleasant and welcoming as every other time I've visited.

BeavisMcTavish · 03/04/2026 05:19

I wouldn’t hesitate to visit the US.. I have done recently, and felt as safe as I ever have there (or any other UK city for that matter). The people are all friendly, more than can be said for London where I look over my shoulder permanently expecting to be mugged by the locals.

Not visiting a country because of the current president is next level bat shit. It’s still the same country with the same people, holding the same views they’ve always had.

I’d take Trumps US over Starmers Britain a hundred times over.

BeavisMcTavish · 03/04/2026 05:20

dupe

Daisy03 · 03/04/2026 05:24

Assuming you’re not Muslim? You’re talking with quite a bit of privilege there

Come on OP, you can’t be that ignorant.

We're debating with a Trump supporter so it's a high chance they are.

Would you holiday in Russia? Or China?

KeepYaHeadUp · 03/04/2026 06:12

I have just got back from California with my young children. We are white, so I absolutely acknowledge my privilege there plus my kids are young so not likely to be the target of anything. But it felt completely safe. Everyone we met who wanted to chat seemed v pro UK (planning trips to London, Europe , etc) and nothing dodgy happened.

niknak1234 · 02/04/2026 17:43

I find that so odd.

Their homeland has fallen to fascism. Why would anyone want to visit a fascist state? I will not visit the US in the same way I wouldn’t have visited apartheid South Africa.

They have had alot of bad experiences, as in being spat at, stolen items whilst out, foul language, things thrown at them. police chasing people across back gardens, knife issues, it's got to the point they don't leave their houses at night, they especially avoid buses. Possibly just an area thing? But it's enough to stop him wanting to return, I suppose he feels it doesn't resemble the place he remembers? I know he worries alot about his sister who is elderly.

This sounds completely bizarre. I can only assume they have only visited/lived in some really awful bit of London that I have never been to. My experience of London is nothing like that at all, and I have friends all over London who also would not recognise this.

CharlotteRumpling · 03/04/2026 09:56

I walk around in London on my own at midnight and have never had a bad experience. Also take public transport.
There was a recent article about how right wing bots have been used to spread disinformation about crime in London. Violent crime has fallen. Shoplifting and phone snatching has increased.

southcoastsammy · 03/04/2026 10:00

I go for work and family reasons. I am white, and I would seriously consider refusing to go for work if I wasn't. So yes, it is that bad. As for safety, the crime and drug rates there are sky high at the moment, so personal safety will be more of an issue in some cities.

Right now I’m sitting on a couch in my home in a Midwestern state, eating a Cadbury Creme Egg I bought at Walmart. Nearly all the employees at that particular Walmart are black Muslim women, who I’d guess are probably Somali given the demographics around here. My daughter’s class at a small Catholic school has four or five kids with immigrant parents - in this case, Kenyan and Mexican. My neighbors are Vietnamese. Nobody’s flailing and gasping because oh, my, people of color with accents.

@YankSplaininghow much did you pay for the crème egg?

You should go live there then. With your intellectual prowess I’m sure that you’d fit right in with the Trump voters.

Absolutely not - but then I wouldn’t go to Turkey either. I don’t think there’s any comparison.

ExtraOnions · 03/04/2026 15:31

Being snatched off the street by ICE and kept in secret detention, Not being able to access Maternity care, citizens being shot on the streets for peacefully protesting, not to mention the chaos that’s going to hit from the country going bankrupt .. I wouldn’t trust that basic services would continue to function, and I certainly wouldn’t give the Trump administration a penny of my tourist dollars.

ACynicalDad · 02/04/2026 17:08

Safe? yes, desirable? no.

I'm white British English, I'll probably be fine.
So I'd feel safe enough.
I'm not an "I'm alright Jack" type though and wouldn't want to visit whilst it's such a shit show at the moment.

Lolz… ahhh and there we have it. Sounds like you think you’re the morally and intellectually superior one. Give that head of yours a wobble. I’m there a few times a year in various States (red and blue) and know how safe I feel.

Obama era would have been equally fine in my mind vs the shit tip we’re now contending with. Joe Bidens USA wouldn’t have been in my list to settle in given the choice but ‘Liking’ the president or PM isn’t the reason to stay or leave a country, it’s the environment ACTUALLY created, not what you read about on both sides of a bias Press. Being the clever one of the two of us, you’ll know that.

Do you? People are literally being snatched off the streets, shot dead in their cars and the price of everything is skyrocketing. I wouldn't go back either.

Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton was also denied entry for his involvement in regulating social media content.

Now they'll be checking when you apply for a visa.

Thanks but this is for visas and not tourist travel on an ESTA, which is what people are mainly talking about. Getting stopped at immigration on an ESTA and being forced to show your social media isn’t happening on arrival in the US.

I was asked about social media for the visa interview I had under the Obama administration, not that anyone actually checked any of it, so this isn’t new, just a little more aggressively worded.

I’m not a Trump fan, I can’t wait til he is gone, but scaremongering does no good. There are lots of reasons not to visit the US at the moment but this really isn’t one of them.

Tourists are not being snatched off the street or shot, and the question is about tourism.

On top of which ATC shortages are causing collisions and the US has picked a pointless and unwinnable fight with a country that would have no qualms about doing what the Libyans did in 1988.

I'd still prefer not to have to witness it.
