Is it safe to visit The US?

niknak1234 · 02/04/2026 16:59

Over the last few months I have seen a lot of is it safe to travel to The US threads, and a lot of replies of "I wouldn't chance it."

Why do people really think is going to happen at the most popular tourist destinations?

Strip searched at JFK airport because you posted you didn't like Trump on Mumsnet? Shot by ICE at The Magic Kingdom whilst queueing up to meet Chip n Dale? Deported to Caracas whilst watching Lion King on Broadway?

Well I certainly wouldn’t fly in an American owned plane at the moment and I think I might well be increasingly nervous in very ‘Americanised’ tourist destinations such as Disneyland because of the raised risk of terrorism thanks to the war but as that’s the new normal, people might just have to start getting used to it.

Their understaffed Air Traffic Control has long been a concern - it's been sloppy since Reagan but now they're really at breaking point.

Crushed23 · 02/04/2026 21:14

There’s a massive disconnect between MN and reality. International visitors to the US only fell 3% in 2025, and that will be more than made up for in 2026 with the World Cup this year.

I live here (in a major tourist hotspot) and I would LOVE for tourist numbers to come down because you can’t move for them about 8 months of the year. But alas, tourists from around the world still arrive in their tens of millions every year.

I think he is great.

Ahhh, you think Trump's great.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the US/Israeli attacks on the bridge under construction at Karaj. The second attack took place when rescue services were helping injured people. I guess that's the American way!

The death toll following strikes on a bridge in Karaj, a city near Tehran located in Alborz province has increased to eight, according to the deputy of security and political affairs at the Alborz Governor’s Office.
Ghodratollah Seyf added that 95 have been injured in the strikes and has called it a “horrific crime”.

Has anyone actually heard of a case of anyone’s social media being checked at the airport, let alone being refused entry because of a critical post about Trump? As I recall, all this stems from one fella who was some sort of self-proclaimed agitator who was outspoken about the US and was on a watchlist anyway. I have not heard of any other travellers being stopped for this reason at all.

Why? What has he done to make American great again?

We are going next October 12 of us including my mixed race husband and 2 of our kids, been several times and one of my girls was asked once where in India she came from, followed by some bemused looks when me a very pale blonde hair woman stepped forward as her mother! My father on the other hand, born and raised in London won't set foot back in the capital until khan has gone! He feels it's very unsafe for us and his family still living there tell him the same. So I suppose it all boils down to how you judge your safety will be affected?

mondaytosunday · 02/04/2026 22:05

@Mrscharlieeeeeno it’s voluntary to put your social media details currently.
OP I’m visiting family now. It’s business as usual with way more expensive (though not as high as UK) petrol. There’s a Brazilian living in the house and she’s totally at ease. I’m sure she faces prejudice but no more than usual.
You realise many people from outside Uk think it’s unsafe due to the amount of reported knife crime? Exaggerated for sure, as is the violent crime here. Sure there’s more, but we’ve been out and about every day without any fear. Most people are just going about living their daily lives.

Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton was also denied entry for his involvement in regulating social media content.

Now they'll be checking when you apply for a visa.

Haven't RTFT, but just wanted to say that worst thing that happened to me when I went to Vegas last September is that I had to declare that I had an avocado in my bag. I had planned to eat it on the flight as I was doing low carb, but didn't in the end. I couldn't believe that the passport control guy at Phoenix airport treated me like a bloody criminal, left his post and hauled me off to some other security personnel where my luggage was scanned again! Not exactly a nice welcome. But that was it and everything else was fine apart from the dreadful, expensive food and the insane tipping culture.

MacchiatoMavis · 02/04/2026 23:14

Asking someone who is happy to publicly state that the ultra-tanned baw-bag is great WHY they think that is probably the most pointless thing you can do.
By virtue of their insane assertion you must know you are wasting your time, breath, finger skin and sanity!

You have to admit that, for someone so enthusiastic about him, they are strangely quiet on the matter. Makes you wonder if they even believe a word they type.

Out of curiousity, what do your father's family living in London think is so dangerous?
I can understand people from outside London not knowing the reality, just stories, but not those actually living there!

Actually it’s at least twice tha amount and equates to abiut 30 billion loss to thr economy so not insignificant. In some places that border Canada it’s as high as 90%

If you don’t like tourists don’t live in a tourism hotspot.

Do you think your dad might have dementia? Because that's bizarre, speaking as a born and raised mixed race Londoner who actually still lives here.

in California currently.
Choose the area carefully and it’s fine . This bit is cowboys and aging hippies. And no kings demos …

They have had alot of bad experiences, as in being spat at, stolen items whilst out, foul language, things thrown at them. police chasing people across back gardens, knife issues, it's got to the point they don't leave their houses at night, they especially avoid buses. Possibly just an area thing? But it's enough to stop him wanting to return, I suppose he feels it doesn't resemble the place he remembers? I know he worries alot about his sister who is elderly.

YankSplaining · 02/04/2026 23:59

Right now I’m sitting on a couch in my home in a Midwestern state, eating a Cadbury Creme Egg I bought at Walmart. Nearly all the employees at that particular Walmart are black Muslim women, who I’d guess are probably Somali given the demographics around here. My daughter’s class at a small Catholic school has four or five kids with immigrant parents - in this case, Kenyan and Mexican. My neighbors are Vietnamese. Nobody’s flailing and gasping because oh, my, people of color with accents.

Gosh. Not sure if it's an area thing or they have been unlucky.
Makes sense they are scared though.

People can spend their money however they choose and regardless of whether you happen to think it’s logical. I had assumed from Trump’s statements that he wouldn’t want British people there anyway such is his contempt for us. Happy to oblige.

I went to London the other week and was robbed in broad daylight: Nine quid for a pint!

MidnightMeltdown · 03/04/2026 02:59

I don’t care whether it’s safe or not, why should we go over there and spend money? Plenty of other places to go. US tourist industry is, quite understandably, really suffering right now. Why would you go over there and support them? They need to learn some lessons.

🤣🤣🤣

The US is expected to lose 12.5 billion dollars in tourism - hardly an insignificant sum!

I think it’s safe, generally, yes. At least mostly from political violence (perhaps assuming you are the right demographics).

I’m American, lived there 30 years. Would I go there right now? No. That’s partly for political reasons. I refuse to allow my non-American family members to be searched. But also there are safety issues not specifically related to Trump. Violent crime is high. It’s worse than it used to be, but even when I lived there, I was constantly watching over my shoulder, nervous walking alone after dark, locking doors behind me as soon as I got home. I don’t do any of that here. I’d say it’s similar to South Africa in many ways (used to live there as well and I also wouldn’t travel there voluntarily these days).

I live here.

I feel very safe. I live in a quiet suburb and can leave my door unlocked overnight (frequently do). If graffiti ever appears in a public place, it is power washed away within 48 hours.

The confidence I have in my own personal safety and in the security of my home and belongings used to horrify my DM back when she was young enough and well enough to visit from across the pond.

She lives in a suburb too, and all the houses there including hers are bristling with security cameras and motion sensor lights that can probably be seen from outer space.
