Is it safe to visit The US?

Over the last few months I have seen a lot of is it safe to travel to The US threads, and a lot of replies of "I wouldn't chance it."

Why do people really think is going to happen at the most popular tourist destinations?

Strip searched at JFK airport because you posted you didn't like Trump on Mumsnet? Shot by ICE at The Magic Kingdom whilst queueing up to meet Chip n Dale? Deported to Caracas whilst watching Lion King on Broadway?

I would never visit when Trump is President. 70 million people voted for him, inflicting a cancer on the world, and I'm trying to avoid giving those people my hard earned cash as much as I can.

I think he is great.

Personally, I do not have a reason to go to America specifically, and there are loads of other places to visit. Therefore I see no reason to go. I fully acknowledge Trump does not speak for all Americans - but a large number of people did vote for him as their President, so I assume agree with a lot of what he believes.

I know one black friend has changed plans to avoid the US. Doesn't want the risk.

Assuming you’re winding us up, but very happy to hear why you think this? Trump supporters never seem to able to articulate why he’s amazing.

That’s my reason. I don’t want to fund their wars by contributing to their economy.

I think it’s relevant that I’m white though. Whenever I talk about this with friends who aren’t white they have the same reason as me plus a genuine concern about how they would be treated.

Good for you. Do you live there? If not, why not? If you do, why are you so arsed whether foreigners come to the US or not?

The social media checking is more an issue for people having visa interviews isn't it?

I think people conflate unsafe and undesirable. I've no wish to go to the US just now. The volatility of their politics is not something I want to get caught up in or even witness. But I wouldn't feel unsafe.

Well I certainly wouldn’t fly in an American owned plane at the moment and I think I might well be increasingly nervous in very ‘Americanised’ tourist destinations such as Disneyland because of the raised risk of terrorism thanks to the war but as that’s the new normal, people might just have to start getting used to it.

Re the crime rate, it’s actually the lowest since the 1960s. Don’t blame people for not wanting to be exposed to ICE/Possibly deranged border security, though.

Trump is awful but it is safe (or as safe as it has ever been). What has happened with ICE is also awful but the actions are primarily targeted to immigrant communities. I’m in a blue state (CA) where over 50% of the population is non-white, everyone is just going about life as normal although certain communities are obviously quite guarded and scared that ICE will come around. The border fears are also ridiculous, hundreds of thousands of people go through immigration at the airport each week, they don’t have the ability to do much. They may be rude but that has always been the case. Whether people want to come here for ideological reasons is a different story. But most of the taxes etc you pay as a tourist go to the state so by visiting somewhere like CA you are actively supporting a state that opposes Trump which is at least more tolerable

If you might be pregnant then it isn’t safe due to the change in the law on abortions which means that if you start to miscarry the doctors can do nothing to help you.

This isn’t true everywhere though, abortion remains legal and accessible in many states

I’ve been five times in the last two years to a different state each time (including a trip last month) and it felt perfectly safe.

Most Americans hate him, his approval ratings are through the floor.

It always circles back to racism. He allows them to be openly racist instead of feeling social disapproval in the past. A lot of them lost their minds when a black man won an election.
