I’m heart broken, and I’m on my own crying.

I’m away with work on a business trip, I’m heading home today… but my childhood dog has been put down over night, my mum told me as he got very poorly and he had a horrendous turn. I’m on my own in a hotel room, 200 miles away from home and I’m so sad, I can’t even hug my husband because he’s not here. He’s also a sleep as he’s at home with my kids ( my post is at 6am ) and he doesn’t even know. I feel so sad and I’ve got to face work colleagues at breakfast in 2 hours.

am I being silly?

You’re not being silly at all. It is heartbreaking. I’m so so so sorry. Please try to hold yourself together and get home safely. When I lost my dog I was devastated. I understand x

Springandaprayer · 02/04/2026 06:14

Of course you're not. He was a huge part of your formative years. The issue with dogs is that a thousand lifetimes with them wouldn't be long enough. Huge hugs and be kind to yourself x

ShinyBlur · 02/04/2026 06:24

I’m so sorry op be kind to yourself

mumstheword1x · 02/04/2026 06:26

Thank you so much everyone. I’m waiting for my husband and friends to wake up so I can atleast lean on people while I travel home. He was a wonderful dog, a perfect little westie. xxx

Oh OP I’m so sorry and I don’t think you’re being silly. You’ve lost a dear friend you had for many years so it’s natural to mourn. Try to think of the good times you had and think of him in doggy heaven running around, playing with other dogs and out of any pain or did comfort.
Try to get away with doing the minimum you can today and have a safe journey home.

I’m so so sorry @mumstheword1x, it is absolutely reasonable to be heartbroken as he was your childhood friend and a huge part of your life for so long💔 I lost my perfect fluffy Westie boy just over a year ago and I miss him terribly, sending you love and hugs 🫂🤍🌈

Pipsquiggle · 02/04/2026 06:40

It's not silly, dogs are wonderful so when they leave us it's very painful.
This happened last week to a colleague, she told us her childhood dog had been PTS and we all sympathised with her. If you can tell colleagues, I would.

Motnight · 02/04/2026 06:41

I am sorry, Op.

Your feelings are completely natural and understandable.

SandwichMakerHater · 02/04/2026 06:49

Do you have to face your colleagues? Is there time meeting up scheduled or is it just breakfast then home? If it's the latter, and you know you won't be able to put on a brave face, could you let your manager know you aren't well and you are going to miss breakfast/head home later?

LumpyandBumps · 02/04/2026 06:50

All of us who know how important dogs are to us will empathise.
Look after yourself today. I hope you get to speak to DH soon.

limetrees32 · 02/04/2026 06:50

Of course you're devastated .
I think you should tell your work colleagues.
Sending virtual hugs xx
And I'm sorry that the news was given to you while you're away on a work trip.
xx

He will have had a lovely life with you and your family.

Motnight · 02/04/2026 06:55

Milo was beautiful, Op.

SortingItOut · 02/04/2026 07:00

Sending love ❤️

When my dog was put to sleep it was booked a few days in advance and I took the day and the next day off work and wallowed in my bed for the whole day afterwards.
The grief consumed me and I've never cried so much.

Even now 2 months on so much sets me off including this post 😢

Be kind to yourself and accept your feelings.

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 02/04/2026 07:02

Oh he’s beautiful. I’m so sorry. They are family 😢

Lennonjingles · 02/04/2026 07:03

So sorry for the loss of your beautiful boy. I was on holiday when my family dog died, my family didn’t tell me till I got home, whilst I could see their reasons for not telling me, I would have wanted to grieve for her when she died. This was over 40 years ago, I still miss her.

Roomforapony · 02/04/2026 07:03

@mumstheword1x Oh what a wonderful fluffy boy😍 Milo was gorgeous🤍

shellyleppard · 02/04/2026 07:04

Sending hugs op 🫂🙏❤️

Pricelessadvice · 02/04/2026 07:05

Oh OP, I’m so sorry.
He was a beautiful boy xxx

Esperanza25 · 02/04/2026 07:06

Aw, I’m so, so sorry. He was just beautiful. Sounds like your Mum had to act very quickly, so the shock must be awful.
You are not being silly, you obviously loved Milo very much. Maybe just tell one collleague initially if you can?
I really am sorry and I understand completely 💐

ThoughtsOnLife · 02/04/2026 07:11

I am so sorry, they are so special and a special part of our lives.

I lost 2 dogs within 24 hours (I think the 2nd was heartbroken as well as having a medical condition) This was over 20 years ago ...I still think of them every day their unconditional love was so special to me.
